Asteroid That Could Be Bigger Than the Washington Monument to Speed by Earth This Weekend

A space rock that is potentially as big as the Washington Monument is due to pass by the Earth this weekend.

Asteroid 2008 GO20 is due to make a close approach to Earth on Sunday July 25 at about 1:50 p.m. EDT. It is being tracked by NASA 's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS).

According to the scientists, these layers in the marine rocks could not have been caused by usualcurrents. Moreover, their orientation matches the direction of tsunami waves produced from the asteroid impact.

OU to study asteroid samples which could hold secret to formation of solar system | ITV News

Gigantic asteroid '2008 GO20' nears Earth, likely to pass on July 25 | India News | Zee News

"This asteroid has visited earth at a much closer distance of 19 lakh km and 29 lakh km in 1935 and 1977 respectively. At that time, it flew away and never came towards the earth," said Dr Pattnaik.

As per Dr Pattnaik, '2008 G20' will be closest to the earth on July 25, 2021 at 11.21 pm as per Indian Standard Time (IST). He also revealed that the gigantic asteroid is estimated to be 97m in width and 230 meter in length which will be around the size of four football fields put together.
