Rare Blue Moon, the last until 2023, wows stargazers (photos) | Space

A rare seasonal " Blue Moon " wowed skywatchers Sunday (Aug. 22), marking the last time this type of moon will grace the sky until 2023.

The full moon, also known as the " Sturgeon Moon ," was not called blue for its color. Rather, it has to do with a scheduling rule that happens during a calendar year with 13 full moons, instead of the usual 12.

The subtle influence of the Moon on Earth's weather - BBC Future

The effects of the Moon's actions upon Earth are still not fully understood. The challenge is to disentangle what is myth and when our lunar companion really does have an influence.

The most obvious effect the Moon has on the Earth can be seen in the ocean tides. As the Earth rotates each day, the Moon's gravity pulls the water on the nearest side of Earth towards it, creating a bulge.

The full moon, also known as the " Sturgeon Moon ," reaches its peak Sunday morning at 8:02 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT). For New York City observers, the full moon will rise at 8:47 p.m., after the sun sets at 7:45 p.m. local time that day.

Spacesuits Aren't Ready For NASA Astronauts To Return To The Moon : NPR

The two NASA spacesuit prototypes, one for exploring the surface of the moon's South Pole (left) and one for launch and reentry aboard the agency's Orion spacecraft, won't become a reality in time for a planned 2024 mission. Kevin Wolf/AP hide caption

NASA won't be ready to send astronauts to the moon by 2024 as planned because, among other reasons, their spacesuits won't be ready, the agency's internal watchdog found.

NASA's Perseverance rover catches glimpse of Mars' moon

While on a mission to watch for clouds, NASA's rover Perseverance snagged a view of something else.

In a time-lapse scanning the skies, there's a gleaming dot in the Martian sky. NASA said it's Deimos, one of Mars's two moons.

Sky watching is fun no matter where you are. I took this short time lapse movie to watch for clouds, and caught something else: look closely and you'll see Deimos, one of two moons of Mars.

Starwatch: Harvest moon on Sept. 20 | Chanhassen Opinion | swnewsmedia.com

With daylight slipping away, September's skies make an excellent background for watching stars and planets.

Venus shines briefly above the western horizon after sunset. On the 9th, a young crescent moon joins the planet. As both sink, the brilliant star Arcturus, in Bootes, the herdsman, comes out above them.
