Even small Mars dust storms dry out the Red Planet, scientists find | Space

Thanks to data from three different Mars orbiters, scientists have determined that small, local dust storms, like their much larger counterparts, play a key role in drying out the Red Planet.

Martian dust storms can spread across the whole planet and envelope it in darkness. For a long time, planetary scientists have known that those behemoth storms were responsible for wicking away the planet's water.

Go on a Panoramic Video Tour of Mars With the Curiosity Rover

The rover has been puttering about the Gale Crater, a 96-mile-wide (154-kilometer-wide) basin on Mars, since first landing there in 2012.

These snapshots also provide some interesting insights into how the planet's environment has evolved over millions of years. The region that Curiosity previously explored was dominated by clay-rich rocks that formed in lakes, but now it's finding rocks filled with salty minerals called sulfates.
