NASA's DART mission will crash craft to redirect asteroid, scientists say

NASA hopes a mission that is expected to launch next month will demonstrate a technique that could prevent an asteroid from striking Earth.

The mission, called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART, is led for NASA by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

Watch a video tour of NASA’s Lucy asteroid explorer – Spaceflight Now

Set for launch Oct. 16 on a flight to explore asteroids in the outer solar system, NASA’s Lucy spacecraft has been fueled and encapsulated inside the payload fairing of its Atlas 5 rocket.

The Lucy spacecraft is the centerpiece of a $981 million mission to visit eight asteroids, including seven located in swarms of Trojan asteroids ahead of and behind Jupiter in its orbit around the sun.

Highly porous rocks are responsible for asteroid Bennu's surprisingly craggy surface

New research, published in Nature and led by mission team member Saverio Cambioni, used machine learning and surface temperature data to solve the mystery.

"The 'REx' in OSIRIS-REx stands for Regolith Explorer, so mapping and characterizing the surface of the asteroid was a main goal," said study co-author and OSIRIS-REx principal investigator Dante Lauretta, a Regents Professor of Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona.

Research Says Nuclear Blast Effective For Late-Stage Asteroid Impact

A new space study has revealed that using a nuclear disruption method is an effective solution in an emergency scenario where an asteroid is in the late stages of a collision course with Earth.

Another version of the strategy is sending a spacecraft into space and ramming it against the asteroid to knock it off course. NASA is actually testing this approach as part of its DART planetary defense project.

Asteroids with Highly Porous Rocks Lack Fine-Grain Regolith: Study | Sci-News.com

Planetary researchers have discovered an inverse correlation between the local abundance of fine-grain material and the porosity of rocks on the carbonaceous asteroid (101955) Bennu .

This mosaic image of asteroid Bennu is composed of 12 images collected on December 2, 2018 by OSIRIS-REx's PolyCam instrument from a range of 15 miles (24 km). Image credit: NASA / NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center / University of Arizona.

Nuking Asteroid Similar to Armageddon Could be "Very Effective" According to Report

Michael Bay's 1998 disaster-thriller Armageddon needs no introduction at this point.

In a new report featured on Science Alert, it seems that a "late-time small-body disruption" defense system of Earth is actually a viable strategy against incoming asteroids.

According to physicist Patrick King of John Hopkins University Maryland: "One of the challenges in assessing disruption is that you need to model all of the fragment orbits, which is generally far more complicated than modeling a simple deflection.
