Comet Makes a Pit Stop Near Jupiter's Asteroids

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope snapped this image of the young comet P/2019 LD2 as it orbits near Jupiter's captured ancient asteroids, which are called Trojans. The Hubble view reveals a 400,000-mile-long tail of dust and gas flowing from the wayward comet's bright solid nucleus.

For the first time, a wayward comet-like object has been spotted near the family of ancient asteroids.

After traveling several billion miles toward the Sun, a wayward young comet-like object orbiting among the giant planets has found a temporary parking place along the way. The object has settled near a family of captured ancient asteroids, called Trojans, that are orbiting the Sun alongside Jupiter. This is the first time a comet-like object has been spotted near the Trojan population.

Asteroid 7-times size of Big Ben to pass Earth - NASA tracks 'potentially hazardous'

Close approaches occur whenever an object comes within 0.05 astronomical units (au) of Earth or about 4.6 million miles.

While this might not seem threatening at first glance, on the grand scale of the solar system, it is close enough for astronomers to pay attention.

NASA said: "As they orbit the Sun, near-Earth objects (NEOs) can occasionally approach close to Earth.

"Note that a 'close' passage astronomically can be very far away in human terms: millions or even tens of millions of kilometres."

A young comet-like object that had been travelling for several billions of kilometres towards the Sun has now made a pit stop around a group of ancient asteroids near Jupiter, as per the observations made by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.

This wayward, unexpected visitor belongs to a class of icy bodies called centaurs, which are found between Jupiter and Neptune. The comet itself, however, appears to have come from the Kuiper Belt—a region of icy debris beyond Neptune's orbit. When such comets approach the Sun, they get activated for the first time by the rising heat, which dynamically transforms them into a more comet-like body.

Asteroid 2021 flyby: Space rock twice the size of a blue whale to pass Earth at 58,000mph |

According to analysis from the space agency, the asteroid is travelling through the solar system at 26 kilometres per second.

NASA has revealed the asteroid will reach its closest point to Earth on Saturday, February 27, when it will be 4.2 times the distance of the Earth and the Moon, or more than 1.5 million kilometres from us.

Nonetheless, this is still close enough for the asteroid to be considered a "near Earth object" (NEO) by NASA.

IARPA Program Driving New Capabilities to Capture Clearer Images of Satellites Orbiting (Very)

The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) is developing new scientific approaches to take high-definition-like pictures of geosynchronous satellites from the ground. The goal is to better account for the behavior and movement of these high orbiting objects in space.

To address this important need, IARPA and its research team are partnering with leading scientists at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory to build a hypertelescope – a single large telescope made up of seven smaller individual ones. While the effort entails extensive science and engineering, the hypertelescope essentially works by collecting the light from smaller telescopes to produce a single, clearer image.

Chinese Mars mission is now orbiting the Red Planet - Axios

Why it matters: China is now the sixth nation or space agency to operate a spacecraft in orbit around Mars.

What's happening: The mission — called Tianwen-1 — is expected to gather data about the red world from orbit. Eventually, the spacecraft will release a rover down to the Martian surface.

Sputnik Vaccine Orbits Slovak Politics | Reporting Democracy

In January, Prime Minister Igor Matovič was still expressing confidence that Slovakia would have enough Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines for most of its adult population, and would only use the Sputnik V vaccine if it was approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). But by mid-February, he had changed his tune and become a firm proponent of using the Russian vaccine without EU authorisation.

Matovič told the media that on January 18 the Slovak government had ordered extra vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna that would enable the state to inoculate 85 per cent of the adult population, or 3.7 million people. The AstraZeneca vaccine was pending EMA approval at that time, but has since become part of the vaccination program in Slovakia when it was recommended for use on January 29.

Astronauts Kate Rubins and Victor Glover conducted a Sunday spacewalk

Astronauts Kate Rubins and Victor Glover Jr. began their spacewalk outside of the International Space Station at 6:12 a.m. ET and ended at 1:16 p.m. on Sunday.

The spacewalk assisted with a continuation of upgrades for the space station orbiting Earth. The activity lasted for seven hours and four minutes.

Both NASA crew members are veteran spacewalkers at this point. Glover had already conducted two spacewalks since arriving at the space station in November. Sunday’s was his third.

China just launched three more Yaogan 31 reconnaissance satellites to orbit | Space

China successfully sent three reconnaissance satellites into orbit Tuesday (Feb. 23), according to media reports.

A Long March 4C rocket carrying the Yaogan-31 satellites flew into space from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert at 9:22 p.m. EST (0222 GMT, or 10:22 a.m. local time Wednesday, Feb. 24), according to a report from China's state news provider CCTV .

"Having entered their planned orbits, the satellites will be used for electromagnetic environment surveys and other related technology tests," CCTV added in the short report.

The National Aeronautics and Space Agency (Nasa) on Thursday shared unseen pictures of the planet Venus captured by its Parker Solar probe. The Parker Solar probe flew close to the second planet of the solar system and provided pictures of what the space agency termed as 'unexpected views of the inner solar system.'

The Parker Solar probe's WISPR uses the gravity of the planet Venus to understand the dynamics of solar winds, take images of the solar corona and study the heliosphere. The heliosphere is the bubble which goes beyond the orbits of the planets and is created by solar winds. It moves with the Sun through interstellar space and is shaped like a long wind sock.

Radioactivity in meteorites sheds light on origin of heaviest elements in our solar system

Some of the nuclei produced by the r process are radioactive and take millions of years to decay into stable nuclei. Iodine-129 and curium-247 are two of such nuclei that were pro-duced before the formation of the sun. They were incorporated into solids that eventually fell on the earth's surface as meteorites. Inside these meteorites, the radioactive decay generat-ed an excess of stable nuclei.

Why are these two r-process nuclei are so special? They have a peculiar property in com-mon: they decay at almost exactly the same rate. In other words, the ratio between iodine-129 and curium-247 has not changed since their creation, billions of years ago.

On October 19th, 2017 , astronomers from the Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii announced the first-ever detection of an interstellar object in our Solar System. In honor of the observatory that first spotted it, this object (designated 1I/2017 U1) was officially named ‘Oumuamua by the IAU – a Hawaiian term loosely translated as “Scout” (or, “a messenger from afar arriving first.”)

Multiple follow-up observations were made as ‘Oumuamua left our Solar System and countless research studies resulted. For the most part, these studies addressed the mystery of what ‘Oumuamua truly was: a comet, an asteroid, or something else entirely? Into this debate, Dr. Shmuel Bialy and Prof. Avi Loeb of the Harvard Institute for Theory and Computation (ITC) argued that ‘Oumuamua could have been an extraterrestrial probe !

'Nearby' Planets That Might Be More Habitable Than Our Own | IE

In 2020. astronomers created a shortlist of 24 planets they thought could be considered superhabitable candidates, out of the more than 4,000 known exoplanets. These planets were specifically identified by first looking at planetary systems that have terrestrial planets in the habitable zone, and which orbit K-type main-sequence stars. Some of these planets were 1.5 times the mass of Earth and estimated to be between 5 and 8 billion years old, with similar temperatures.

Just Some of the Planets That TESS Has Found Nearby - Universe Today

Ever since NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope was launched in 2009, there has an explosion in the study of the extrasolar planets. With the retirement of Kepler in 2018, it has fallen to missions like the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) to pick up where its predecessor left off. Using observations from TESS, an international team of astronomers recently discovered three exoplanets orbiting a young Sun-like star named TOI 451.

The research was led by Elisabeth R. Newton, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Dartmouth College. She was joined by researchers from NASA JPL, NASA Goddard, NASA Ames, the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute, the SETI Institute, the Max-Planck-Institute for Astronomy, the Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, and multiple universities and observatories.

Here's what we know about planetary protection on China's Mars mission | Space

This spring, China will attempt its first Mars landing. But in anticipation of that milestone, scientists are wondering whether the Tianwen-1 rover may carry Earthly contamination with it to the surface.

NASA's Perseverance rover went through precisely that treatment before it left Earth in July for its journey to Mars. However, Congress bans NASA from communicating with its Chinese counterpart.

"I don't know anything beyond what all the rest of us know from the public releases of information, but they do participate," Lisa Pratt, NASA's planetary protection officer , told a virtual meeting of the committee leading the creation of a new decadal survey identifying the priorities of planetary scientists into the 2030s on Feb. 11.

New Study Knocks Theory of Planet Nine's Existence Out of Orbit | Smart News |

The hidden Planet Nine first made headlines in 2016 when Caltech researchers Mike Brown and Konstantin Batygin found evidence of a massive object ten times the size of Earth orbiting 20 times farther away from the sun than Neptune. Using computer simulations and modeling, Planet Nine was found based on observing six "extreme" Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) that appeared clustered together.

But a recent study carried out by Kevin Napier, a physics Ph.D. student at the University of Michigan, and his colleagues could challenge Brown and Batygin's analysis.

Hackers Leaked Secret Details of This Military Spy Plane

A ransomware gang has reportedly posted details of a Swedish/Canadian airborne early warning and control aircraft on the dark web. The aircraft, known as Globaleye, was compromised after hackers breached Canadian jet manufacturer Bombardier’s cybersecurity. Globaleye is roughly comparable to the U.S. Air Force’s E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control aircraft.

The Globaleye aircraft combines the Bombardier 6000 long range global business jet with Saab’s Erieye airborne radar sensor. Erieye is mounted to the top of the aircraft fuselage in what Saab describes as a “ski-box.” Globaleye is similar to the E-3 Sentry and the U.S. Navy’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft.

Twitter has started to label some tweets with a warning about materials "obtained through hacking." This new label is appearing on some news stories that Twitter believes are based on hacks and leaked documents, but Twitter users have found an easy way to hack a URL together to make it appear on any tweet.

Amnesty International: Hackers attacking Vietnam dissidents - ABC News

It said former staff and volunteers for VOICE were harassed, prevented from traveling and had their passports confiscated when they returned to Vietnam.

"More recently Ocean Lotus was found to have created fake online media websites based on content automatically gathered from legitimate news websites," the report said.

Vietnam is one of the handful of the world's remaining communist single-party states that tolerate no dissent.

Exclusive: Hackers Break Into 'Biochemical Systems' At Oxford University Lab Studying Covid-19

An Oxford lab that's been researching Covid-19 and potential vaccine candidates has been hacked and biochemical preparation machines compromised.

One of the world's top biology labs—one whose renowned professors have been researching how to counter the Covid-19 pandemic—has been hacked.

Oxford University confirmed on Thursday it had detected and isolated an incident at the Division of Structural Biology (known as "Strubi") after Forbes disclosed that hackers were showing off access to a number of systems.
