Think of it as a bank robber stealing the vault and cracking it somewhere else vs. trying to crack open the vault at the bank itself.
It's simple math as every combination of letters, numbers and special characters can be tried in milliseconds if there is enough computing power available.
As you add additional characters, the time to crack them goes up because each additional character exponentially increases the number of guesses required.

Hackers Leaked Secret Details of This Military Spy Plane
A ransomware gang has reportedly posted details of a Swedish/Canadian airborne early warning and control aircraft on the dark web. The aircraft, known as Globaleye, was compromised after hackers breached Canadian jet manufacturer Bombardier’s cybersecurity. Globaleye is roughly comparable to the U.S. Air Force’s E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control aircraft.
The Globaleye aircraft combines the Bombardier 6000 long range global business jet with Saab’s Erieye airborne radar sensor. Erieye is mounted to the top of the aircraft fuselage in what Saab describes as a “ski-box.” Globaleye is similar to the E-3 Sentry and the U.S. Navy’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft.
Twitter's new hacking label has already been hacked - The Verge
Twitter has started to label some tweets with a warning about materials "obtained through hacking." This new label is appearing on some news stories that Twitter believes are based on hacks and leaked documents, but Twitter users have found an easy way to hack a URL together to make it appear on any tweet.

The warning trick works on both web and Twitter's mobile apps for iOS and Android, and it even appears to crash the Android version if you attempt to like a tweet that includes this new label.
Amnesty International: Hackers attacking Vietnam dissidents - ABC News
It said former staff and volunteers for VOICE were harassed, prevented from traveling and had their passports confiscated when they returned to Vietnam.
"More recently Ocean Lotus was found to have created fake online media websites based on content automatically gathered from legitimate news websites," the report said.
Vietnam is one of the handful of the world's remaining communist single-party states that tolerate no dissent.

Oxford University lab with COVID-19 research links targeted by hackers | ZDNet
Oxford University, one of the most prominent educational institutions in the UK, was made aware of the security breach on Thursday.
Strubi's labs are used by students studying molecular and biological science, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Oxford team has been researching the virus itself and examining vaccine candidates.
The school's latest publications include work on RNA strands and viruses, as well as antiviral agents. However, the group has not been directly involved in the development of the Oxford University-AstraZeneca vaccine.
Hackers tied to Russia's GRU targeted the US grid for years | Ars Technica
For all the nation-state hacker groups that have targeted the United States power grid —and even successfully breached American electric utilities —only the Russian military intelligence group known as Sandworm has been brazen enough to trigger actual blackouts, shutting the lights off in Ukraine in 2015 and 2016 . Now one grid-focused security firm is warning that a group with ties to Sandworm's uniquely dangerous hackers has also been actively targeting the US energy system for years.
Hackers Seized on the Pandemic Some States Are Fighting Back | The Pew Charitable Trusts
COVID-19 made its U.S. debut in Washington state, but the virus was only the first of several intruders to attack the state in the past year.
Last spring, cybercriminals breached the state’s unemployment system. Washington was one of the states affected by the massive SolarWinds hack, which was discovered in December. And earlier this month, the state auditor’s office disclosed that fraudsters had exposed the personal information of more than a million residents.
Exclusive: Hackers Break Into 'Biochemical Systems' At Oxford University Lab Studying Covid-19
An Oxford lab that's been researching Covid-19 and potential vaccine candidates has been hacked and biochemical preparation machines compromised.
One of the world's top biology labs—one whose renowned professors have been researching how to counter the Covid-19 pandemic—has been hacked.
Oxford University confirmed on Thursday it had detected and isolated an incident at the Division of Structural Biology (known as "Strubi") after Forbes disclosed that hackers were showing off access to a number of systems. These included machines used to prepare biochemical samples, though the university said it couldn't comment further on the scale of the breach.
