Travelling Through a Wormhole in Space May Be Possible, New Research Suggests | Technology News

The idea of a wormhole — a bridge between two patches of the universe — was first suggested in 1935

The favorite space travel maneuvers in and out of a wormhole of science-fiction fables could be more real than we thought. Physicists initially did not know whether black holes existed in the real world. Over the years, they said black holes are very real and then showed they even exist in our galaxy, using the theory of general relativity, which predicts that a sufficiently compact mass can deform spacetime to create a black hole.

Firefly Aerospace picks SpaceX rocket to launch Blue Ghost moon lander in 2023 | Space

The space launch company Firefly Aerospace announced this week that when its Blue Ghost lander launches to the moon in 2023, it will do so on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

"Firefly is excited to fly our Blue Ghost spacecraft on the highly reliable Falcon 9 , which will deliver NASA instruments and technology demonstration payloads that support NASA science goals and NASA's Artemis program," Shea Ferring, Firefly's senior vice president of spacecraft, said in a statement Thursday (May 20). The Falcon 9 will be able to carry Blue Ghost to the moon without forcing the lander to expend much of the fuel it might need for the actual touchdown, Ferring added.

Europe unveils plans to bring 'GPS' and Skype to the moon with satellites | Space

The European Space Agency (ESA) has kicked off the development of a future satellite constellation that will orbit the moon and provide navigation and telecommunication services to lunar explorers.

If all goes according to plan, the new system could be in place in the late 2020s, only a few years after the expected landing of NASA's crewed Artemis 3 mission near the lunar south pole.

ESA believes that Earth's celestial companion is set to become a busy destination in the coming years, with commercial companies and nations from across the world all wanting a slice of the "eighth continent." The new constellation, called Moonlight , will make it easier and cheaper for a fledgling lunar economy to blossom, ESA officials suggested in a news conference on Thursday (May 20).

NASA Rover to Search for Water, Other Resources on Moon by Late 2023

(NASA) – As part of the Artemis program, NASA is planning to send its first mobile robot to the Moon in late 2023 in search of ice and other resources on and below the lunar surface.

Data from the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, or VIPER, would help the agency map resources at the lunar South Pole that could one day be harvested for long-term human exploration at the Moon.

VIPER's design calls for using the first headlights on a lunar rover to aid in exploring the permanently shadowed regions of the Moon. These areas haven't seen sunlight in billions of years and are some of the coldest spots in the solar system. Running on solar power, VIPER will need to quickly maneuver around the extreme swings in light and dark at the lunar South Pole.

Lithophane Lamp Has Us Over The Moon | Hackaday

Lithophanes are artistic creations which rely on the varying thickness of a material that is then backlit to reveal an image. While these were often made in porcelain in the past, these days we have the benefit of 3D printing on our side. The principle can be deftly applied to everything from flat planes to spheres, with [Tiffany Lo] demonstrating a great application of the latter with her 3D printed moon lamp.

The basic concept is to take a 2D image of the lunar surface, and then use it to generate a height mapped sphere for 3D printing. When lit from within, the sphere will appear as per the surface of the moon. The sphere geometry was generated with the Lithophane Sphere Maker online tool combined with NASA data of the moon intended for computer graphics purposes. The sphere was then printed on a typical FDM printer before being assembled upon a base with LEDs inside for backlighting.

NASA's 7 Asteroid Simulations Show the Difficulty of Stopping Impacts

Two Asteroids That Could Be As Big As Football Fields to Zip Past Earth

The first of the pair of large space rocks to make a close approach to our planet is an object known as 2021 KC.

According to NASA 's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS,) the asteroid is estimated to measure somewhere between around 174 feet and 394 feet in diameter.

Data from the CNEOS shows that 2021 KC will make a close approach to the Earth on May 21 at 11:36 p.m. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), or 7:36 p.m. ET.

After nearly five years in space, NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer – OSIRIS-REx – spacecraft is on its way back to Earth with an abundance of rocks and dust from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu.

On May 10 at 3:23 p.m., the spacecraft fired its main engines full throttle for seven minutes – its most significant maneuver since it arrived at Bennu in 2018. This burn thrust the spacecraft away from the asteroid at 600 miles per hour, setting it on a 2 ½-year cruise toward Earth.

Last February, the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA sent their Solar Orbiter probe to enjoy our beautiful sun from every angle. An opportunity for the probe to observe and photograph its first solar flare.

Against all odds, it did its job directly by observing and photographing the solar flare as the probe was about 77 million kilometers from the star.

Yes, scientists at NASA and the European Space Agency had never expected to see such a phenomenon soon. In fact, when the probe noticed this eruption, it was behind the Sun with respect to Earth. Scientists had no plans to get any data whatsoever at that time. Because the sun’s atmosphere usually blocks communications when the sensors are behind the sun.

Lunar eclipse will have Southern California’s eyes turning to the skies early Wednesday

For anyone who has trouble sleeping, works the night shift or wakes in the wee hours of the morning, an astronomical wonder will be visible for the first time since 2019.

Southern Californians awake between 4:11 and 4:26 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26 can look to the skies and watch as the first total lunar eclipse since January 21, 2019 appears. A total lunar eclipse is an event where the moon passes into the Earth’s shadow, completely obscuring the orbiting body from view. Onlookers will not need special glasses or other precautions to look at the event, unlike solar eclipses.

Bad Astronomy | Black holes may not swarm in the globular cluster NGC 6397

Recently here on the blog I wrote about the globular cluster NGC 6397 , a collection of a hundreds of thousands of stars in a compact ball, orbiting the Milky Way and currently about 8,000 light years from Earth.

I wrote about it because a pair of astronomers ran statistical models on the way the stars are orbiting in the cluster , and claimed there's a pretty good chance that there's a swarm of stellar-mass black holes in the cluster core, with a total mass of 1,000–2,000 times the Sun's, meaning there could be anywhere from many dozens to a couple of hundred black holes there.

"Clyde's Spot," a feature discovered on Jupiter in 2020, has a strange new look, NASA's Juno spacecraft reveals.

The spot, discovered in 2020 by amateur astronomer Clyde Foster using his own 14-inch telescope, first appeared as an oval-shaped feature near the planet's famous "Great Red Spot." Two days after that discovery, NASA took an up-close look at the newfound feature with the Jupiter-orbiting Juno. Juno team members determined that the feature was "a plume of cloud material erupting above the top layers of the Jovian atmosphere," NASA said in a statement .

Metals found in the atmospheres of comets in and beyond our solar system surprise scientists |

Metal atoms have surprisingly been discovered in the frigid atmosphere of the first known interstellar comet to visit our solar system, a new study finds.

Astronomers have also detected metal in the cold haloes surrounding comets local to the solar system , which suggest our solar system comets and the interstellar visitor may have similar origins, researchers add.

Comets , which are made up of dust and ice left over from planetary formation, could yield key clues to the chemistry of early planetary systems. Scientists often deduce the composition of comets by examining the clouds of gas and dust known as comas that surround the hearts of comets.

Solar system donated to help family in need by Sundriven, Firmer & Greentech – pv

floating deck at the home of Ollie, a seven-year-old and her family from Arana Hills in
Queensland, Australia. Sundriven jumped on board and teamed up with the Triple M
Brisbane team to design and install a brand new 6.3 kW solar system utilising a Fimer
5.0kW UNO-DM-PLUS-Q inverter.

Triple M, through their "Lend a Hand" program and local partners, have come together to build a safe outdoor padded space for Ollie to play, practice her walking and be with her family. After hearing about the project, Sundriven, a local solar installation company in Brisbane, put their hand up to help the family. Initially, it was to relocate some solar panels as part of an ageing solar system.

Sunrun Solar Opposes the Proposed Solar Energy Tax

The AEMC argues that there's an excess of electricity being fed back into the grid and that the grid can't cope with the levels of electricity being returned. To fight this issue, the AEMC proposes a fee for solar system owners when they pump unused energy back into the network.

The Big Bottling Company installs 950kW solar system, reduces gas

In Ogun State, Nigeria the Big Bottling Company's 950kW solar power installation has come online. The system showcases the commercial and industrial (C&I) market's appetite for renewable energy.

According to Starsight Energy, an African C&I solar power provider, this project is the largest solar solution in Nigeria to date. The installation shows the potential of sustainable power for Nigerian industries.

The Big Bottling Company's Nigerian plant produces Big Cola, Big Orange, and other popular Nigerian drinks. The planned doubling of the plant's production rate required diversification of its energy supply.
