Musk planning first orbiting SpaceX test flight in January | TheHill

Musk made the announcement during a meeting hosted by the National Academy of Sciences . The 394-foot, bullet-shaped rocket had an initial flight test in May, but SpaceX will launch the rocket into orbit from its mega booster, the Super Heavy, for the first time early next year.

Russia's Destruction of an Orbiting Satellite Raises Space Debris Concerns

Russia tested an anti-satellite weapon on November 15, destroying one of its own old and defunct satellites, Kosmos 1408. Launched in 1982, Kosmos 1408 was some 300 miles above Earth.

The danger of damage to the ISS or an orbiting satellite aside, tracking a debris field that could include thousands of pieces, in order to head off collisions, is a concern all its own. Very small debris in space is essentially impossible to track reliably, if at all.

A small rock orbiting the Sun, may be a chunk of the Moon

Astronomers discovered 469219 Kamo'oalewa, a small rock orbiting the Sun, in April 2016. Now they believe that instead of being a meteor, it may have been a broken off piece of the Moon.

According to a study published in the journal Nature on November 11, 2021, the rock, which is about 41 metres in diameter, gives off a spectrum close to the Moon’s: “This spectrum is indicative of a silicate-based composition, but with reddening beyond what is typically seen

Northrop Grumman Cygnus cargo ship departs space station to conduct experiment in orbit | Space

The latest Cygnus cargo ship departed the International Space Station Saturday (Nov. 20) after sending a haul of cargo to the orbiting crew.

The Northrop Grumman NG-16 resupply vessel was released from the grip of the station's robotic arm at 11:01 a.m. EST (1601 GMT) by a command from NASA's Mission Control Center in Houston as both spacecraft sailed high over the South Pacific Ocean.

Blown-up satellite pieces circling Earth shown in scientist's unsettling simulation

A simulation of the orbital debris, created by Hugh Lewis, a professor of astronautics at the University of Southampton who researches space debris, shows the ring of problematic junk orbiting Earth.

"We're going to see consequences from this particular event for the next few decades," Lewis told Mashable. "It wasn't a good outcome. It was never going to be a good outcome."

A new telescope may finally find a livable planet around nearby Alpha Centauri

A newly announced mission aims to explore the closest star system, Alpha Centauri, in hopes of finding whether or not the neighboring stars have orbiting planets around them and if those planets may be habitable.

The new mission is a privately funded telescope dubbed TOLIMAN, which is the original Arabic name for Alpha Centauri. TOLIMAN also stands for T elescope for O rbit L ocus I nterferometric M onitoring of our A stronomical N eighbourhood. It is set to launch in the mid-2020s.

Bad Astronomy | Black hole found in nearby galaxy may not be real | SYFY WIRE

Just a week ago, I wrote about research claiming to have found a black hole in a nearby galaxy based on observations of a star orbiting it .

Yeah, that may not be the case. Just days after the first paper came out a different team of astronomers shows that the second object may be a relatively normal star , and not a black hole.

Iodine propulsion systems take flight in space | Astronomy.com

(Inside Science) — Right now, there is a unique spacecraft orbiting our planet. Its secret is the iodine propellant it uses to maneuver in space.

The spacecraft, launched in 2020, is a type of miniaturized satellite called a CubeSat, weighing about 45 pounds (20 kilograms), and it's the first satellite to use iodine to convert electrical energy to ion propulsion.

Can Build-Your-Own Solar System Help The US Reach Biden's Climate Goals?

Fossil fuels produce 83% of the world's energy and 73% of the world's greenhouse gases. How best can renewables like solar and wind change this picture?

Solar and wind energy are already often the lowest cost producers of electricity and when they offset fossil fuels they help to cut down our greenhouse gas emissions. Large companies – think Google, Apple, Ikea and Walmart etc.

Odd Martian meteorites traced back to largest volcanic structure in the solar system

About a million years ago, an asteroid smacked into the normally tranquil surface of Mars. The impact released a fountain of debris, and some of the rocky fragments pierced the sky, escaping the planet's gravity to journey through the dark.

Some of the rocks eventually found their way to Earth and survived the plunge through our planet's atmosphere to thud into the surface–including a hefty 15-pound shard that crashed into Morocco in 2011.

Alien Worlds Hold Minerals Like Nothing in Our Solar System, Scientists Say

They are small, dim, and distant, which means that we don't have a lot of detailed information about what they're made of. This is especially true for rocky exoplanets, like Earth, Venus , and Mars , of which we can't currently see the surfaces.

There is, however, one way we can peer into the guts of rocky worlds – and it suggests that some of the minerals they're made of are nothing like the minerals in the Solar System. So alien are these minerals, in fact, that scientists had to invent new terms to classify them.

A look at the Oort cloud, on the very edge of the solar system

Every system needs a boundary, and the Solar System is no different. Although we haven’t been able to physically reach and see it, we have a theory about what this edge looks like. And its name is the Oort cloud.

Ask anyone on the street where the Solar System ends, and they’re likely to mention Pluto. To a certain extent, it wouldn’t be wrong; Pluto really is the farthest planet / dwarf planet from the Sun.

Eggshell Planets Have a Thin Brittle Crust and No Mountains or Tectonics - Universe Today

Planets without plate tectonics are unlikely to be habitable. But currently, we’ve never seen the surface of an exoplanet to determine if plate tectonics are active. Scientists piece together their likely surface structures from other evidence.

The number of classifications for exoplanets can be as granular as we’d like. Ultimately, each one is different. We’re in the early stages of understanding the variety of exoplanet types, and eventually, a comprehensive classification scheme will emerge.

Maybe There's No Way to Tell if Habitable Planets Orbit Proxima Centauri... Yet!

Our closest stellar neighbor is Proxima Centauri, an M-type (red dwarf) star located over 4.24 light-years away (part of the Alpha Centauri trinary system).

The people responsible for the discovery were Guillem Anglada-Escudé and a team of astronomers from the Pale Red Dot campaign.

This method consists of observing the spectra of stars for signs of “wobble,” where the star is moving closer and farther away from Earth. This is caused by the gravitational influence of planets that orbit the star, the extent of which is used to infer the mass of the planets.

How Hackers Use Payloads to Take Over Your Machine | eSecurityPlanet

A payload is a piece of code that executes when hackers exploit a vulnerability . In other words, it's an exploit module. It's usually composed of a few commands that will run on the targeted operating system (e.g., key-loggers) to steal data and other malicious acts.

And a payload can hide within a non-executable file such as an image and trigger later. Most people will be less reluctant to open .png than .zip or .exe files.

You could argue that the idea of hacking began at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the 1950s and 60s, when the term "hack" was used for elegant or inspired solutions to problems. Many of these "hacks" were actually practical jokes.
