Eyeing extraterrestrial threats, NATO to set up new space centre in Germany – EURACTIV.com

NATO defence ministers on Thursday (22 October) are expected to approve a plan to create a new space centre at the alliance’s Air Command in Ramstein, Germany, in response to growing concerns over protecting satellite and navigation assets from enemy interference.

The plans were first reported earlier on Monday by German press agency DPA and the daily Süddeutsche Zeitung.</em

According to the reports, the base would join with the NATO air force high command in Ramstein, in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, and would serve primarily as a coordination centre for space observation.

DC could host 10 demonstrations during election week | wusa9.com

WASHINGTON — The National Park Service is reviewing nine permits for demonstrations across the capital during Election Week, with one event approved so far, and the balance drawing attention to issues from election integrity to U.F.O.s.

The largest of the First Amendment permit applications calls for 10,000 people to organize with the group ShutDownDC , as demonstrators engage in a "week of action to ensure free and fair elections."

The group came into focus during the summer of 2019 when members blocked traffic throughout the District to highlight climate change inaction.

French start-up Ynsect raises $224m to build world's biggest bug farm

A French start-up has come up with a solution to solve the rising global demand for food and the lack of land by building an indoor insect farm.

The start-up raised the funds to build its second indoor farm from investors including Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr.'s Footprint Coalition.

So far, Ynsect has raised $224m (£172m) this month to build the world's biggest bug farm in Amiens in northern France.

The 40-metre-tall plant spread over 40,000 square metres is planning to open in early 2022. Ynsect will produce 100,000 tonnes of insect products such as flour and oil annually and conserve land use.

Stars and planets grow up together as siblings -- ScienceDaily

Astronomers have found compelling evidence that planets start to form while infant stars are still growing. The high-resolution image obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) shows a young proto-stellar disk with multiple gaps and rings of dust. This new result, just published in Nature , shows the youngest and most detailed example of dust rings acting as cosmic cradles, where the seeds of planets form and take hold.

An international team of scientists led by Dominique Segura-Cox at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Germany targeted the proto-star IRS 63 with the ALMA radio observatory. This system is 470 light years from Earth and located deep within the dense L1709 interstellar cloud in the Ophiuchus constellation.

Little Green People? Unlikely. But The Navy Says UFOs Are Real. | WWNO

Every year, thousands of people report seeing things in the sky they can't explain. Science fiction offers an explanation: aliens visiting the human species on flying saucers.

The United States government reignited the conversation around UFOs when the Defense Department released video in late April showing footage from Navy in-flight cameras. In a press release , it confirmed that the videos show "unidentified aerial phenomena." The videos were already circulating on the internet for several years, but by releasing them, the DOD confirmed their authenticity and acknowledged that it had no explanation.

True alienation: when a person of color tries to fit in with UFO enthusiasts | World news | The

The talk with the older student validated a curiosity first sparked by a walk to school about five years prior. On an empty road in Cristo Rey, a lower-middle class, industrial neighborhood in Santo Domingo, a ball of light the size of a car tire appeared about 80 to 100 feet above him. It pulsated, moved steadily, horizontally, away from him, then vanished.

"I was paralyzed for like 30 seconds. I didn't understand what it was. I was so scared," he told me. "I didn't tell anyone because no one would have believed me." He marks that day as one that changed him forever. "I started looking up all the time, looking at the sky," he said.

Navy pilot who took Pentagon UFO video doesn't want link to aliens - Business Insider

"At no point did I want to speculate as to what I thought this thing was — or be associated with, you know, 'alien beings' and 'alien aircraft' and all that stuff," Underwood told the magazine. "It is just what we call a UFO. I couldn't identify it. It was flying. And it was an object. It's as simple as that."

Before Underwood spotted the flying object, he said, he received a tip from his commanding officer that there might be something strange in the sky. A few days earlier, a guided-missile cruiser called the USS Princeton had been tracking about eight to 10 mysterious flying objects near the Catalina and San Clemente islands in California.

Mars to shine bright during October 'opposition'

For most of October, Mars will be brighter in the night sky than anything else in its vicinity, offering people a clear view of the red planet. Mars is also days away from reaching "opposition," a celestial alignment in which Earth, Mars and the sun form a straight line in space, with Earth in the middle.

Mars will be at opposition Oct. 13. On that day, Mars will rise as the sun sets, reach its peak in the night sky at midnight, and then set as the sun rises again. If it's a clear night, skywatchers can expect the red planet to outshine anything else in its region of the sky.

Capturing Heat-Driven Atmospheric Tides on Mars - Eos

On Mars, heat from the Sun drives daily changes in temperature, wind, and pressure in the atmosphere. Known as atmospheric tides, these regular patterns play a major role in shaping the planet's weather.

Atmospheric tides exist on Earth as well, but they have a much greater influence in Mars's thin atmosphere . The details and drivers of atmospheric tides on Mars have remained unclear, however. Now Forbes et al . present new spacecraft data and model simulations that deepen our understanding of tidal patterns in the middle and upper atmosphere of Mars.

What did NASA discover on the Moon, and what is it so excited to tell us? – BGR

We know quite a bit about the Moon thanks to NASA. As the first space agency to send humans to the lunar surface, NASA’s work and that of scientists using data collected by NASA have pulled the curtain back on many of the Moon’s secrets. Still, there a lot left to uncover, and the upcoming Artemis missions could go a long way toward painting a much clearer picture of Earth’s pale neighbor.

Now, NASA has announced that it has something very exciting to share about the big dusty sphere that dominates our night sky. What is it? Did they find those elusive Moon Men? Is the Moon actually made of cheese? Unfortunately, we won’t find out until Monday.

Moon, Jupiter and Saturn are shining brightly together | wtsp.com

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla — These next couple of evenings watch for the waxing moon to sweep by Jupiter and Saturn. Thursday night, they are forming a beautiful triangle in the south to southwest sky.

Jupiter, which is the brighter of the two planets, shines some 13 times brighter than Saturn and brighter than all the stars. The only star to outshine Jupiter in the evening sky is Mars, which you'll find to the east of Jupiter and Saturn, low in the eastern sky.

And here's another article:

Look up! The moon will pay Jupiter and Saturn a visit tonight | Space

Skywatchers will be treated to an eye-catching gathering in the south-southwest sky about an hour after sunset on Thursday (Oct. 22) — a large triangle formed by the moon and two bright "superior" planets.

A superior planet is one that is located in an orbit around the sun that is beyond that of Earth. The planets in question are Jupiter and Saturn, which have attracted the attention of skywatchers all through the summer and early fall.

Of course, these close alignments are merely an illusion of perspective. Our moon is much closer in space to us than is either Jupiter or Saturn . As it orbits Earth, the moon moves in an easterly direction across the sky at roughly its own apparent diameter (0.5 degrees) each hour, or approximately 12 degrees per day. (Your clenched fist held at arm's length covers about 10 degrees of sky.)

Halloween 2020 will have a full moon for the first time in 19 years

The next full moon won’t be the biggest or brightest of 2020, but it could be the spookiest. If, you know, you’re into that stuff.

That’s because on Oct. 31, we will see the first full moon to fall on Halloween since 2001. We won’t see another one until 2039.

We’ll also be seeing a so-called “blue moon,” meaning it will be the second full moon of the month (it also was full on Oct. 1). The next time there will be two full moons in the same month will come in August 2023. The last year we had one, we actually had two: In 2018, the moon was full on Jan. 1 and 31, March 1 and 31. February sort of helped out there by having only 28 days, otherwise it would have claimed one of those full moons from March.

NASA Collects Bits Of An Asteroid To Bring Back To Earth : NPR

This mosaic image of asteroid Bennu is composed of 12 images collected on Dec. 2, 2018 by the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft from a range of 15 miles. NASA/Goddard/University of Arizona hide caption

A NASA spacecraft successfully touched down on a skyscraper-sized asteroid 200 million miles away, in order to collect a small amount of rock and dust that can then be returned to Earth.

The probe, called OSIRIS-REx , is about as big as a 15-passenger van, and it was aiming for a specific spot inside a boulder-strewn crater. The maneuver was tricky and fraught with peril, as the spacecraft had to reach a safe area that's only the size of a few parking spaces.

Dinosaur Asteroid Hit Worst-Case Place - Scientific American

The mass-extinction asteroid happened to strike an area where the rock contained a lot of organic matter and sent soot into the stratosphere, where it could block sunlight for years.

“These components in the atmosphere drove global cooling and darkness that would have stopped photosynthesis from occurring, ultimately shutting down the food chain.”

Some of the soot probably came from wildfires that erupted around the planet following the impact. But most of these particles would have lingered in the lower atmosphere for only a few weeks, and wouldn’t have had much of an effect on global climate.
