Florida Time: UFO sightings near pensacola

Readers : In honor of Halloween, here's a column about Florida and the unexplained: UFOs over Gulf Breeze.

Ed and Frances Walters claimed that the dozens of photographs and a 1 minute, 38 second video that Ed shot in a six-month span, from November 1987 to May 1988, were those of spaceships over their home in Gulf Breeze, a Pensacola suburb.

They weren't alone. A city council member said he saw a bright orange object fly over on March 17, 1988. A retired newspaper publisher said he saw it too. So did a doctor, a chemical engineer and his wife. About 100 witnesses in all backed the Walters' claims.

UFOs over Washington: The first report of 'flying saucers' | The Spokesman-Review

On June 24, 1947 – 73 years ago Wednesday – automatic firefighting system company owner and licensed pilot Kenneth Arnold of Boise, flying from Chehalis to Yakima, spotted nine large metallic-looking objects flying rapidly near Mount Rainier. It would be the first of many reports of "flying saucers" or unidentified flying objects from around the world.

While flying to Yakima on a sales call, Arnold read about a downed Marine C-46 transport that had crashed near Mount Rainier in January. With skies clear and a little time on his hands, Arnold lingered over the area in hopes of spotting the wreckage and earning a $10,000 reward.

See any UFO's in Northwest Florida? Defense officials want to know

WASHINGTON — If "the truth is out there," as the tag line for the old "X-Files" TV series insisted, it might just be flying across Northwest Florida skies — and the government wants to know about it.

Earlier this month, the Department of Defense (DoD), under some pressure from Congress in the wake of sightings of thus-far unidentified flying objects in military airspace, established an Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force.

* * *

In the dry words of a Department of Defense news release, the department established the task force "... to improve its understanding of, and gain insight into, the nature and origins of UAPs." But, perhaps more than just improving its understanding of UAPs, the task force wants "to detect, analyze and catalog UAPs that could potentially pose a threat to U.S. national security."

What Are 'Black Triangle' UFOs? - HISTORY

Within the larger mystery of the UFO phenomenon is another, still-unsolved puzzle: Why do so many reports involve strange, triangular-shaped craft—often described as dark in color, virtually noiseless and the size of a football field or larger? What, exactly, are they? And why are so many witnessed hovering or moving slowly and methodically, with no visible contrails?

In the years after the U.S. Air Force coined the term “unidentified flying object” in 1952, reports often referred to UFOs generically as flying saucers. But witnesses then, and since, have described a wide array of shapes: saucers (or two saucers put together), eggs, hats, cigars, boomerangs, lightbulbs—even Tic Tac candies.
