5 asteroids, including 2 the size of an airplane, are zooming close to Earth this week - CBS News

Five asteroids, one as large as a house and two each the size of an airplane, will fly past Earth between Sept. 6 and Sept. 12, according to NASA's Asteroid Watch dashboard.  

The house-sized asteroid, called JA5, will be the first to approach, passing by the planet on Sept. 6. It will pass within 3.17 million miles of Earth, and was first observed in 2021. According to NASA, the asteroid is about 59 feet in size, hence its comparison to a house.

New space science conference will bring NASA officials to Morehead State

Members of the space science community will soon land in Morehead for the inaugural Appalachian Space Technology and Research Advancement (ASTRA) Conference.

ASTRA-Con 2023 will take place on September 14 through 16 at Morehead State University. Organizers said the student-led event aims to highlight innovations in aerospace technology and research in the region.

Eutelsat invests in Europe-focused space technology venture fund - SpaceNews

TAMPA, Fla. —  Eutelsat has invested in French venture capital firm Karista's space technology fund to strengthen ties with startups across Europe, the satellite operator said Sept. 5.

Asteroid watch: 5 asteroids to pass by Earth Sept.6, 8, 10

If you love knowing what's "out there," NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory maintains an asteroid watch dashboard that tracks asteroids and comets that will make relatively close approaches to Earth.

Five will be approaching "close" to Earth over the next five days. Close is relative when it comes to space. The dashboard displays the next five Earth approaches to within 4.6 million miles.

The consistent effort of the scientists seems to be turning fruitful, as astronomers have recently uncovered promising indications of a planet similar to Earth within our solar system, potentially located in an orbit beyond Neptune around the Sun.

These findings are the result of a study conducted by Patryk Sofia Lykawka of Kindai University in Osaka, Japan, and Takashi Ito of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in Tokyo.
