Could space-going billionaires be the vanguard of a cosmic revolution? | Martin Rees | The Guardian

For humanity truly to slip the surly bonds of Earth, private funds and intrepid thrill-seekers will be required

The space shuttle was, until its decommissioning, the main vehicle for transporting people to and from the ISS. It failed twice in 135 launches. Astronauts or test pilots would willingly accept this level of risk – less than 2%.

Scientific advance leads to a new tool in the fight against hackers -- ScienceDaily

A new form of security identification could soon see the light of day and help us protect our data from hackers and cybercriminals.

People have used codes and encryption to protect information from falling into the wrong hands for thousands of years.

As such, there is an ever-growing need for new security measures to detect hackers posing as our banks or other trusted institutions. Within this realm, researchers from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Mathematical Sciences have just made a giant leap.

Bungie's Claims Against Destiny Hackers Dismissed in Court

While video games can provide players with spectacular visuals, immersive stories, and competitive thrills, at the end of the day they're all made up of thousands of lines of code. That code can be vulnerable to hackers at times, leading to some players having unfair advantages.

Often, hackers who exploit the code of a given game will sell those cheats on through a website. Over the course of a few years, Destiny 2's developer Bungie has fought back against cheating websites.

NASA's OSIRIS-REx probe will visit a second asteroid

Apophis originally drew interest over fears it would strike the Earth in 2029. Researchers put that worry to rest, but it's still a highly valuable subject.

The extension won't come cheap. A visit to Apophis will add $200 million to the cost ceiling of a mission that's already expected to cost $1.16 billion. Even so, it might be worthwhile if it helps humanity better understand asteroids and the risks they may pose to Earth.

Japan's asteroid samples faced pandemic, traffic jams on Earth | Space

Take Japan's Hayabusa2 mission, which launched in 2014 to grab pieces of a near-Earth asteroid called Ryugu and delivered those samples to Earth in December 2020. Even when the space rocks reached Japan, the traveling wasn't quite over.

This trip didn't need any rocket fuel, but that doesn't mean it was easy. "This one is, I would say, a really big deal," Keiko Nakamura-Messenger, who until last month was a cosmochemist at JSC, told Space.com. "This is the first time that we did international samples like this."

Uptick in Solar Activity Parallels Discussion on Effects of Space Weather on the Electrical Grid

Often, our electric grid functions at the whim of the natural world's powerful forces – wind, lightning, Sun. As the solar cycle ramps back up in activity, the power grid reawakens to the threat of space weather, which has the potential to push the system beyond its tipping point.

Power grids are complex systems and solar activity resulting in geomagnetic storms can wreak havoc on grid infrastructure. Current ability to predict such storms exists, but is only as mature as weather prediction was 50 years ago.
