What is a new moon? | Fox News

The new moon is the first lunar phase , which leaves Earth’s natural satellite in shadow.

The modern definition of the new moon occurs “when the Moon and Sun are at the same geocentric ecliptic longitude,” explains NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio on its website . “The part of the Moon facing us is completely in shadow then."

“There’s a new moon about once a month, because the moon takes about a month to orbit Earth,” explains EarthSky . “Most of the time, the new moon passes not in front of the sun, but simply near it in our sky. That’s why, in most months, there’s no solar eclipse.”

The Red Planet briefly disappeared behind the moon for skywatchers in North America on Tuesday (Feb. 18), providing a rare celestial treat for early risers and astrophotographers. 

This game of cosmic "peekaboo" began early Tuesday morning, when the sun had already begun to rise above the U.S. East Coast and Mars had mostly faded into the daylight. However, skywatchers out west had a much better view of the planet as it was "eclipsed" by the moon — but those observers had to wake up well before the crack of dawn to witness the event, which is known as an occultation .

Alexander Krivenyshev of WorldTimeZone.com photographed a gorgeous predawn sky show Thursday morning (Feb. 20), capturing the crescent moon , Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and the red star Antares arcing over the Big Apple.

Krivenyshev, who was observing from the New Jersey city of West New York, also homed in on the triangle formed by the moon, Saturn and Jupiter, snapping a more zoomed-in shot of the trio.

This alignment was no one-off thing; these planets will remain clustered in the predawn sky for a while longer yet, so you can catch them yourself if you're willing to rise before the sun. The moon will become a lesser and lesser participant over the next few days, however, for it's waning toward its blacked-out new phase , which takes effect on Sunday (Feb. 23).

Does NASA Need the Moon to Go to Mars? - The Atlantic

Last week, NASA put out a call for applications for its next class of astronauts. In recent years, when the agency has asked for résumés, the job was shuttling back and forth between Earth and the International Space Station (ISS). But for the first time in nearly 50 years, some of the aspiring space travelers might be training for a mission to the moon.

President Donald Trump wants NASA to fly American astronauts to the lunar surface and beyond. Congress, the president said during his recent State of the Union address, should fund his administration's new program "to ensure that the next man and the first woman on the moon will be American astronauts." This effort, he said, would serve as "a launching pad to ensure that America is the first nation to plant its flag on Mars."

Watch Mars Disappear Behind the Moon in the Early Morning Sky - The New York Times

Look to the sky early on Tuesday, and the crescent moon will make Mars disappear. Then about an hour later, the red planet will return, as if nothing ever happened.

This celestial event is known as a Moon-Mars occultation, and it occurs from some vantage point on Earth about twice a year, according to NASA . Skywatchers from much of North and Central America will have a front-row seat to Tuesday's occultation, and those along part of the West Coast will have an especially good view, with a chance to watch the entire show before sunrise.

Here Are Five Myths About The Moon You Can Easily Disprove Yourself

This year's first supermoon potentially graced the sky on February 9. A supermoon is usually defined as the largest full moon possible.

This is a very loose definition and roughly means this happens when the full moon occurs within 10 percent of its closest to Earth.

From an observer's point of view, a supermoon is approximately just 14 percent bigger than when it's smallest. That said, if you were viewing a normal moon and a supermoon side by side, you would be able to spot the difference.

MIT Team Claims to Have Found The Best Way to Deflect Scary Earth-Bound Asteroids

The decision map weighs up factors like an asteroid's mass and momentum, and then predicts the most effective way of avoiding a collision if it looks like the object will hit Earth's gravitational keyhole – that window of space where a hit would be guaranteed.

At the end of the decision map are three choices: steering the asteroid away with a projectile ; sending a scout up to take more measurements; or sending two scouts up to take more measurements and maybe shift the path of the asteroid slightly (making the projectile option easier further down the line).

We tend to view the bodies of the Solar System as creations of gravity, which pulled their parts together and holds them in place as they orbit. But as we saw with ideas about the formation of Arrokoth , there are lots of situations where gravity is essentially a constant for long periods of time. And given enough of that time, relatively small forces like friction from sparse gas clouds or pressure from the light of the Sun can add up and create dramatic changes.

One of these has been named the YORP effect , for its developers, Yarkovsky, O'Keefe, Radzievskii, and Paddack. It describes how light can alter the rotational properties of orbiting bodies. In a recent edition of the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Dimitri Veras and Daniel Scheeres decided to calculate what happens as the Sun ages, the intensity of its light increases dramatically, and the entire asteroid belt gets YORPed.

Good news: Neural network says 11 asteroids thought to be harmless may hit Earth.

A neural network has identified eleven asteroids, so far thought to be benign, that may eventually come close enough to hit Earth.

These 11 space rocks, each measuring more than 100 metres across, are listed in a NASA database as, for now at least, non-hazardous objects.

However, AI software – developed by researchers at Leiden University in the Netherlands, and dubbed the Hazardous Object Identifier – has singled out the eleven, predicting they could come within 0.05 astronomical units (7.5 million kilometres, 4.7 million miles) of terra firma. By that definition, these asteroids should be labelled as potentially hazardous objects.

An Asteroid Totally Just Mooned Earth

As it approached Earth space, asteroid 2020 BX12 was under close observation. Clocking in at 200 to 450 metres across (656 to 1,476 feet), and moving at around 90,000 kilometres per hour (56,000 miles per hour), the space rock was one of the larger ones to enter our vicinity in recent weeks.

It passed safely by at a distance of over 4.3 million kilometres (2.7 million miles) on February 3, placing it at over 11 times the distance of the Moon, so you can chill about the prospect of total devastation.

YORP Effect - Sun Radiation - Asteroid Belt

Between five and six billion years from now, astronomers say the sun will expand into an even bigger fireball, swallowing almost half the solar system. This rapid expansion into its red giant stage is likely to send asteroids in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter tumbling.

Asteroids that absorb this momentum-packed sunlight eventually re-radiate it back out into space as heat, which creates small amounts of thrust, thus inching the rocky bodies from their original path or causing them to spin faster and faster. Because most asteroids are "rubble piles"—loosely packed blobs of dust, rock and ice—many won't be able to withstand the forces of this increased rotation and will shatter, flinging rocky debris far out into the solar system.

Asteroid Images - Pallas - Asteroid Looks Like Golf Ball

An international research team has discovered a pock-marked asteroid that it's dubbed the "golf ball" asteroid. Pallas, as it's officially called, is currently zipping along its orbit in the asteroid belt.

The team used the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope—an array of four telescopes, each of which have a 26-foot-wide mirrors—nestled in Chile's Atacama desert to get updated images of the asteroid. Over the course of two observation periods in 2017 and 2019, astronomers collected 11 images, which they stitched together to form a 3D image of the celestial object and a map of its crater-speckled surface.

All Those Low-Cost Satellites in Orbit Could Be Weaponized by Hackers, Warns Expert

This is part of its ambitious project to provide internet access across the globe. The race to put satellites in space is on, with Amazon, UK-based OneWeb and other companies chomping at the bit to place thousands of satellites in orbit in the coming months.

Amid all the fanfare, a critical danger has flown under the radar: the lack of cybersecurity standards and regulations for commercial satellites, in the US and internationally.

As a scholar who studies cyber conflict , I'm keenly aware that this, coupled with satellites' complex supply chains and layers of stakeholders, leaves them highly vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Astronomers at Palomar Observatory Find Asteroid Orbiting Sun Between Venus and Mercury - Times

The first asteroid orbiting the sun between the planets Mercury and Venus has been spotted by astronomers at Palomar Observatory in north San Diego County.

Researchers used Caltech’s Zwicky Transient Facility , a special camera attached to the observatory’s 48-inch Samuel Oschin Telescope, to track the tiny body, which is about a mile in diameter.

The asteroid, designated 2020 AV2, belongs to a small class of asteroids known as Atiras, which are bodies with orbits that fall within the orbit of Earth. More specifically, it is the first “Vatira” asteroid, with the “V” standing for Venus. Vatira asteroids, which were only hypothesized until now, have orbits that fall entirely inside the orbit of Venus.

Ariane 5 rocket launches satellites for Japan, South Korea into orbit | Space

Arianespace's third flight of 2020 saw a rocket boost a Japanese telecommunications satellite and a Korean oceanography satellite into orbit from the Guiana Space Center .

The Ariane 5 rocket lifted off flawlessly into a dark sky from Kourou, French Guiana at 5:18 p.m. EST (2218 GMT or 7:18 p.m. local time). The launch continued Arianespace's relationships with entities in Japan and Korea that regularly launch satellites for civilian purposes.

"I am thrilled to announce that JCSAT-17 and GEO-Kompsat 2B have been injected as planned into their targeted orbit," Luce Fabreguettes, Arianespace's executive vice president of missions, operations and purchasing, said in a post-launch news conference, adding that the rocket performed "flawlessly."

SpaceX will launch private citizens into orbit - The Verge

SpaceX is planning to send up to four private citizens into space to take a trip around Earth sometime at the end of 2021 or in early 2022 . The spaceflight company announced an agreement on Tuesday with Space Adventures , a space tourism business that has helped seven different private citizens take trips to (and from) the International Space Station aboard Russia's Soyuz rocket and spacecraft.

Space Adventures said the price of the mission will not be disclosed, and the two companies were light on other details, like what kind of preparation the tourists will have to go through. The companies did say Tuesday that the tourists will fly in the human-rated version of SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft and that they will orbit Earth at two to three times the roughly 250-mile height of the ISS.

SpaceX delays launch of 60 Starlink satellites due to rocket valve checks | Space

The Falcon 9's touchdown at sea will mark SpaceX's 50th rocket landing since the company began recovering boosters in December 2015 .

SpaceX aims to launch up to 4 tourists into super high orbit

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – SpaceX aims to launch up to four tourists into a super high orbit, possibly by the end of next year.

The private company is working with Space Adventures Inc. for the flight, officials announced Tuesday. Ticket prices are not being divulged but expected to be in the millions.

Space Adventures already has helped put tourists into orbit with trips to the International Space Station, working with the Russian space program.

The distant Solar System object known as Arrokoth resembles a reddish snowman, data from NASA reveal.

It is probably typical of the Kuiper belt objects in similar orbits, says David Jewitt, an astronomer at the University of California, Los Angeles. But it would take another spacecraft visit to find out conclusively, he says. "We'll never know for sure until we look."

This Is How Voyager 1 Took A Portrait Of The Solar System

A trail of 39 grayscale shots  – with zoomed-in color insets of each planet, assembled from another 21 color-filtered photos – traces the layout of the solar system (or at least the zigzag strip of it that contained visible planets) from Voyager 1's lofty vantage 32⁰ above the plane of most of the planets' orbits.

Each of the color photos of the planets actually had to be assembled from three photographs, which Voyager's narrow-angle camera snapped in rapid succession: one photo each with three different color filters in violet, green, and blue. Voyager 1 started its panorama at the outer edge of the solar system and worked its way inward, taking the grayscale background photos with its wide-angle camera and photographing each planet in color with the narrow-angle camera as it came to them.

How newborn stars prepare for the birth of planets -- ScienceDaily

An international team of astronomers used two of the most powerful radio telescopes in the world to create more than three hundred images of planet-forming disks around very young stars in the Orion Clouds. These images reveal new details about the birthplaces of planets and the earliest stages of star formation.

Most of the stars in the universe are accompanied by planets. These planets are born in rings of dust and gas, called protoplanetary disks. Even very young stars are surrounded by these disks. Astronomers want to know exactly when these disks start to form, and what they look like. But young stars are very faint, and there are dense clouds of dust and gas surrounding them in stellar nurseries.

The Most Distant World We've Ever Explored Just Shed Light on How Planets Are Born

In the far reaches of the Solar System, a small rock is showing us how giant planets get their start. Arrokoth - the most distant and most primordial world ever visited by a human spacecraft - now spills its secrets in three new papers.

Those findings could resolve some debate about how planetesimals - the small rocky 'seeds' that grow into planets - are formed. And the process appears to be a lot more gentle than previously thought.

"Arrokoth is the most distant, most primitive and most pristine object ever explored by spacecraft, so we knew it would have a unique story to tell," said Alan Stern from the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado and New Horizons Principal Investigator.

“I never expected that our encounter with Arrokoth would be shoulder to shoulder with the Pluto flyby in terms of its importance,” says New Horizons principal investigator and study co-author Alan Stern, a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute. “I didn’t expect to make an earth-shattering discovery about planet formation in the Kuiper Belt, and yet we have. At Arrokoth, we stumbled onto maybe the biggest prize of the entire New Horizons mission.

A signal originally detected by the Kepler spacecraft has been validated as an exoplanet using the Habitable-zone Planet Finder (HPF), an astronomical spectrograph built by a Penn State team and recently installed on the 10m Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory in Texas.

The planet, called G 9-40b, is about twice the size of the Earth, but likely closer in size to Neptune, and orbits its low mass host star, an M dwarf star, only 100 light years from Earth. Kepler detected the planet by observing a dip in the host star's light as the planet crossed in front of -- or transited -- the star during its orbit, a trip completed every six Earth days.

Conspiracy theories abound despite officials' denial of drone invasion - ABC News

Mysterious lights hovering over Mesa skies Sunday night puzzle residents

MESA, AZ — Mysterious lights hovering above the east Valley have many wondering if we've had a close encounter.

"It was pretty bright, it was about straight up over here, and it went straight that way, stopped, and it didn't seem like it was too far," said DJ Maier and Kerri Burnett, describing what they saw.

The couple says they spotted the phenomenon outside their Mesa home on Sunday around nine that night.

Hackers Were Inside Citrix for Five Months — Krebs on Security

Citrix provides software used by hundreds of thousands of clients worldwide, including most of the Fortune 100 companies. It is perhaps best known for selling virtual private networking (VPN) software that lets users remotely access networks and computers over an encrypted connection.

But in a letter sent to affected individuals dated Feb. 10, 2020, Citrix disclosed additional details about the incident. According to the letter, the attackers “had intermittent access” to Citrix’s internal network between Oct. 13, 2018 and Mar. 8, 2019, and that there was no evidence that the cybercrooks still remain in the company’s systems.

Could hackers turn satellites into weapons?

According to William Akoto, a scholar who studies cyber conflict , hackers taking control of the satellites orbiting Earth could have dire consequences.

“On the mundane end of scale, hackers could simply shut satellites down, denying access to their services. Hackers could also jam or spoof the signals from satellites, creating havoc for critical infrastructure,” Akoto wrote for Space.com. “This includes electric grids, water networks and transportation systems.”

Personal details of 10.6m MGM hotel guests revealed by hackers, report says | Technology | The

MGM owns and operates luxury resorts in Las Vegas, as well as other locations in the United States, Japan and China. Its Las Vegas resorts frequently draw thousands of guests for casino tournaments, boxing matches and UFC fights.

An MGM spokesperson told ZDNet that the information comes from a security incident that happened last year after MGM "discovered unauthorized access to a cloud server that contained a limited amount of information for certain previous guests of MGM Resorts".
