The Mercurial Sun At The heart Of Our solar System - Astrobiology

Two images of the real Sun observed by instruments on the SoHO spacecraft are shown (left) along with a sketch (not to scale) of the Earth and its magnetosphere (right).

On the other, in the dawn of Earth's existence the Sun was far dimmer than today, and yet evidence for early liquid water is written into geology. Now in middle age, the Sun should be a benign object of little interest to society or even astronomers.

Traveling the Solar System with Pulsar Navigation - Universe Today

A team of researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have found a way for travelers through the Solar System to work out exactly where they are, without needing help from ground-based observers on Earth.

Before you can navigate a course through space, you need to know your location and orientation. Current space craft can only discover one of these things independently. It can find its orientation, or the direction in which the space craft is pointing, fairly easily.

New Way to Glimpse Distant Worlds Could Give Us Our First Real Look at Exoplanets

Planets outside of our Solar System are rather dull things. So dull, we can only see them directly by sifting out a scattering of reflected rays amid the glare of their parent star. Even then, the best we can manage is a pinprick to identify its position.

Gathering enough light to reveal intricate details of these distant worlds would require a lens far larger than anything we can construct. One wider than Earth. Wider than Jupiter , in fact.

A Mission to Uranus and Neptune Is Our Best Hope to Find Dark Matter

Dark matter is strange, mysterious stuff. It might make up as much as 85 percent of the mass of the universe, and its gravity affects everything around it. But we can't see it with our naked eyes.

Now a Swiss team has drawn up an intriguing plan—a possible way to get a much more precise read on dark matter. It involves shooting probes toward the most distant planets in our solar system, Uranus and Neptune, and carefully logging every force tugging on their trajectories.

New England Solar Power: A Guide to Solar Energy in These 6 States - CNET

Even though tons of people are installing solar, it can be a difficult decision to make, since each situation is different. A roof might be angled or shaded differently than a neighbor's. A utility might offer a great (or terrible) net metering deal, making your panels even more valuable.

Even so, there are enough regional similarities (things like electricity costs, solar costs and climate) to make a bird's-eye view worthwhile. Starting with New England and working through the rest of the US, we're looking at the regional factors that affect the choice to go solar.
