At least two new planets discovered orbiting star Gliese 887 - The Washington Post

The star is officially GJ 887, or Gliese 887, named for the scientist who put together a catalogue of stars. It's a red dwarf star — cooler than our sun and not nearly as big. It is 11 light-years away, or 64 trillion miles, which is cosmically right next door. Only 11 star systems are closer to our sun than this one.

Astronomers studied the light from the star for months and could see that it was being tugged by the gravity of orbiting bodies, according to the new report. The planets are outside our solar system — what astronomers call exoplanets.

Newly discovered alien planet spotted zipping around highly active star | Space

Two veteran NASA planet-hunting missions found a Neptune-size planet that circles its young star every Earth week. But don't expect habitability here: The star throws epic temper tantrum-like storms.

The newly found planet — called AU Microscopii b or AU Mic b for short — was discovered by plumbing data gathered by the agency's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), as well as the recently retired NASA Spitzer Space Telescope . Researchers hope to learn more from AU Mic b about how planets evolve, including how their atmospheres form and interact with their parent stars.

Are Planets with Oceans Common in the Galaxy? - Astrobiology

This illustration shows NASA's Cassini spacecraft flying through plumes on Enceladus in October 2015. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech

Several years ago, planetary scientist Lynnae Quick began to wonder whether any of the more than 4,000 known exoplanets, or planets beyond our solar system, might resemble some of the watery moons around Jupiter and Saturn.

Quick, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, decided to explore whether -- hypothetically -- there are planets similar to Europa and Enceladus in the Milky Way galaxy. And, could they, too, be geologically active enough to shoot plumes through their surfaces that could one day be detected by telescopes.

Colorado Skies: Look for Saturn and Jupiter in July – Loveland Reporter-Herald

July's Colorado sky sees Jupiter and Saturn, the two largest planets in the solar system, enter the pre-midnight evening sky side by side for the first time in 20 years.

As these planets plod along in their respective orbits around the sun, every 20 years or so the faster moving planet Jupiter gradually catches up to and passes the slower moving planet Saturn in the night sky.

Over the next several months, the two planets will appear side by side on the Sagittarius-Capricornus border.

Chance of finding young Earth-like planets higher than previously thought -- ScienceDaily

Research from the University of Sheffield has found that the chance of finding Earth-like planets in their early stages of formation is much higher than previously thought.

The team studied groups of young stars in the Milky Way to see if these groups were typical compared to theories and previous observations in other star-forming regions in space, and to study if the populations of stars in these groups affected the likelihood of finding forming Earth-like planets.

WASHINGTON — The Office of Naval Intelligence has an "Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force," and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio is requesting a detailed analysis of their findings.

The reveal of both the task force's existence, as well as Rubio's data request, came in a June 17 Select Committee on Intelligence report authored by Rubio on the Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 .

"However, the Committee remains concerned that there is no unified, comprehensive process within the Federal Government for collecting and analyzing intelligence on unidentified aerial phenomena, despite the potential threat," the report states.

Lights in night sky are not UFO's

About 2,000 satellites currently circle the earth on a daily basis, but many of those are note necessarily visible to the naked eye. That said, some can be seen on a clear night in very dark places away from city lights...I've seen them before from northern Michigan moving across the sky. As described by many, the lights from these chains of satellites appear like a line across the sky. Some have described it as a string of pearls.

The Increased Role of Robots Post Pandemic | RoboticsTomorrow

As the novel coronavirus reshapes the economy, it's also having a significant impact on how we work. The crisis seems to be accelerating a number of work trends that existed before the pandemic. We're shopping online more often, working from home more than ever and also adopting new tech.

As contact becomes more dangerous, and people pivot to working from home, robots have emerged as a powerful tool for businesses and organizations wanting to keep everyone safe.

Using robots to assist neurological impairment recovery | MSUToday | Michigan State University

Movement impairments after strokes and other neurological injuries are among the most common causes of long-term disability in the United States. Thanks to a $700,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, a group of Michigan State University researchers are working on ways robot-assisted learning can help patients improve common daily activities.

“Motor impairments are extremely common in many neurological injuries, and impairments in the hand can lead to difficulties in performing activities like reaching and grasping,” said Rajiv Ranganathan, assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and a co-principal investigator of the grant. “By using soft robotics to assist and modify these movements, we can complement current therapeutic approaches, potentially providing a way to accelerate rehabilitation.”

But first, a quick refresher seems in order. The first "calculator" for determining the number of extraterrestrial intelligences (ETIs) in our galaxy at any given time was created by American physicist and SETI researcher Dr. Frank Drake. During a meeting at the Green Bank Observatory in 1961, Drake prepared an equation which summed up the probabilities of finding ETIs in our galaxy.

Henceforth known as the Drake Equation, this probabilistic argument is expressed mathematically thus:

Fear factor: Low
Believability: Low
From the declassified documents of Project Blue Book, a federal investigation of UFOs from 1947 to 1969, emerged a 1955 report of a green-blue object shaped like a barrel in La Veta. The man blessed with the sighting? Former state Senator Sam T. Taylor, who said the ship looked "jellylike" and flew silently. We don't want to call Taylor a crackpot—then again, he did lobby the state to build a hydrogen bomb factory.

Fear factor: Low
Believability: High
"Ain't no kind of aircraft, I'll tell you that," Tim Edwards says in the 1995 video he captured of a cigarlike object above his home in Salida. It darted around the sky quicker than any human plane, and a speck of light bounced off its surface like a ball ricocheting off an Atari Pong paddle. Sure, the video could have been doctored, but the gasps of Edwards' daughter sound entirely unrehearsed.

"Many discoveries in astronomy were not planned," said the lead author of the new catalog, Dr. Brian Lacki. "Sometimes, a major new discovery was missed when nobody was looking in the right place, because they believed nothing could be found there. This happened with exoplanets, which might have been detected before the 1990s if astronomers looked for solar systems very different than ours. Are we looking in the wrong places for technosignatures?

"The catalog is not just limited to SETI, though," noted Lacki. "My hope is that any program with a new capability may use the Exotica catalog as a shakedown cruise around the universe."

"The 11th Green," Reviewed: A Wild Fantasy of U.S.

The extraordinarily imaginative new feature by Christopher Munch, "The 11th Green," stakes out a genre unto itself: poli-sci-fi, a fusion of science fiction and the history-rooted political thriller.

"The 11th Green" is a U.F.O. tale that's built from the connection of two events. In Palm Desert, California, Laurie Larkspur (Agnes Bruckner), the assistant to an elderly retired Air Force general named Nelson Rudd, finds him dead on the floor of his home; she calls the general's estranged middle-aged son, Jeremy Rudd (Campbell Scott), an investigative journalist in Washington, D.C., and summons him to Palm Desert to dispose of his late father's estate.

Hidden for centuries, Zealandia was once a part of the same land mass as Antarctica and Australia before breaking off 85 million years ago.

New Zealand’s research institute, GNS Science, published two new maps and an interactive website on Monday where people can sit back at home and explore this new continent as the site depicts its coastlines and territorial limits.

Actually kind of fairly almost credible evidence suggests that an alien spacecraft landed in a field in the Hauraki Plains.

At 7.30pm on September 4, 1969, two Straits Air Freight Express pilots reported an unidentified flying object in the form of a fluorescent blue pulsating light out the pilot's side window. Earlier that day, farmer Bert O'Neill had taken a walk around his farm near Ngatea near Thames. He'd noticed that some of his normally green manuka trees appeared to be silvery in colour on the tips. He thought it was a bit odd, so decided to investigate. He couldn't quite believe what he found.
