Extraterrestrial Clues to Earth's Lower Mantle From Shocked Meteorites

Deep below the Earth’s surface lies a thick rocky layer called the mantle, which makes up the majority of our planet’s volume. While Earth’s mantle is too deep for humans to observe directly, certain meteorites can provide clues to this unreachable layer.

In a study recently published in Science Advances , an international team of scientists — including Sang-Heon Dan Shim and Thomas Sharp of Arizona State University — has completed a complex analysis of a “shocked meteorite” (one that has experienced high-pressure and high-temperature conditions through impact events) and gained new insight into Earth’s lower mantle.

Evidence for the charge disproportionation of iron in extraterrestrial bridgmanite | Science

Bridgmanite, MgSiO 3 with perovskite structure, is considered the most abundant mineral on Earth. On the lower mantle, it contains Fe and Al that strongly influence its behavior. Experimentalists have debated whether iron may exist in a mixed valence state, coexistence of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ in bridgmanite, through charge disproportionation. Here, we report the discovery of Fe-rich aluminous bridgmanite coexisting with metallic iron in a shock vein of the Suizhou meteorite.

Here, we report the discovery of the Fe-rich analog of bridgmanite with a composition of (Fe 0.54 Mg 0.37 Al 0.15 Na 0.03 Ca 0.02 Si 0.89 )O 3 coexisting with metallic iron in a shock vein of the Suizhou meteorite. The discovery represents the first direct evidence in nature of the Fe disproportionation reaction, which so far has only been observed in some high-pressure experiments.

Elon Musk: 'UFO on a stick' will connect people to Starlink internet - Business Insider

But there remains an open question of how, exactly, anyone will connect to SpaceX's next-generation satellite internet network.

During a press call earlier this year, Musk described a computer-powered antenna terminal that would look like "a small to medium-size pizza."

The addition of a steering motor, according to Musk's tweet, suggests electronic switching alone is not enough to maintain a reliable connection to satellites in typical use cases.

US navy confirms UFOs recorded by pilots are real – The Mail & Guardian

The spokesperson for the United States navy's deputy chief of naval operations for information warfare, Joseph Gradisher, has confirmed to Time magazine that the videos recorded by its pilots showing a series of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and released to the public are, in fact, real.

These videos, which show what the navy prefers to refer to as Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, were sourced from the US department of defence, and were initially reported on in the New York Times in December 2017 as being part of the department's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Programme, which monitored and documented UFO activities from 2007 to 2012.

Alienware is best known for its beefy gaming laptops and preconfigured desktop rigs, but at CES 2020, the company showed off a wild new prototype, the Concept UFO. It's a full Windows 10 gaming PC, shrunken down into a form factor very similar to a Nintendo Switch — complete with detachable controllers and a dock to hook it up to a TV or monitor.

The Concept UFO consists of four pieces: there's a main "head" unit, which has an eight-inch, 1200p display; the battery; and all the processing and graphic hardware. There are two controllers, which attach through an enjoyably solid magnetic rail system.

Dell recently granted a press tour of its innovation labs at New York, showcasing a number of prototype foldable and convertible devices that debuted at CES 2020.

Dell's concept duet is Dell's take on a foldable, book-like PC. The dual displays are joined in the center with a 360-degree hinge. This looks very similar to the Microsoft Duo announced at the Microsoft event.

Since it's a prototype, Dell was understandably scarce on details, not delving further into its specs, price range, and release date. It's also unconfirmed if it will run Windows X, Microsoft's new operating system with enhancements to dual-displays.

Intersteller Lab's New Project in the Mojave Desert Will Make Tourists Feel Like They're

Travelers who are dreaming of one day getting to take part in space travel may not have to wait much longer. And the best part is they may not even have to leave this planet to do it.

In late 2019, Interstellar Lab, a Paris-based research studio, announced its plans to build the first space-inspired village. And it will do so right here on earth. More specifically, they plan to build it in the Mojave Desert in California.

The interstellar-inspired village will be made up of a network of self-sustaining biomes. Those biomes will each have a job including recycling water, growing food, and producing energy to sustain up to 100 people at a time.

KENT, Wash. — With an expanding local employment base of 2,000 workers, Kent-based Blue Origin is perhaps the biggest of the new space companies that call Washington state home.  

Founded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos, the company has long-been considered secretive, or at the very least, low-profile. Now that appears to be changing.

Its blue and white fabric roof and the open, well-lit space inside is a big change from the unmarked, low key headquarters across the street.

NASA's 1st SLS Megarocket Core Loaded Onto Barge Ahead of Key Engine Test | Space

Mars settlement in California desert may train astronauts for Mars - Business Insider

Even if we succeed in sending humans to Mars someday — NASA hopes to do that in the 2030s — astronauts would need a place to stay once they arrive.

To research how people might one day settle on Mars, engineers and scientists at a company called Interstellar Lab are designing space-inspired villages.

In November, the company announced a plan to build a development, called the Experimental Bioregenerative Station (EBIOS), in California's Mojave Desert starting in 2021. The design for that project features glass domes for growing food and luxurious bedrooms for astronauts and visitors.

NASA's Mars 2020 to Prepare for Humans into Deep Space

The rover will make the trip to the red planet later this year, and start preparing for NASA's mission to send humans into deep space.

NASA recently showed off its Mars 2020 rover. It has four wheels and is about the size of a car. The rover will be sent to Florida's Kennedy Space Center in three parts. It will be put together there. The vehicle's official name will be chosen soon.

"The trick, though, is that we're looking for trace levels of chemicals from billions of years ago on Mars," Mars 2020 deputy project manager Matt Wallace told Reuters. The rover will collect up to 30 samples, or small amounts, of soil. NASA plans to have them picked up and returned to Earth by a future spacecraft.

NASA Just Unveiled Its 2020 Mars Rover, And We're Beyond Excited

The rover has been constructed in a large, sterile room at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, near Los Angeles, where its driving equipment was given its first successful test last week.

Shown to invited journalists on Friday, it is scheduled to leave Earth in July 2020 from Florida's Cape Canaveral, becoming the fifth US rover to land on Mars seven months later in February.

Among the devices on board the rover are 23 cameras, two "ears" that will allow it to listen to Martian winds, and lasers used for chemical analysis.

Jets Blast Out of Famous Black Hole at 99% the Speed of Light | Space

The jets emanating from a famous black hole are cruising along at about 99% the speed of light, according to new observations.

Researchers spotted the speedy jets emanating from a black hole in the galaxy Messier 87 (M87) — the same black hole that was imaged directly for the first time last year .

NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory imaged knots of material speeding away from the accretion disk, where gas, dust and other material swirl around the black hole. Some of the material falls into the black hole, and some is redirected away into jets of material that follow magnetic field lines.

The black hole at the heart of the Messier 87 galaxy bears the name M87*, and astronomers have been observing it for a long time. Last year, the Event Horizon Telescope captured an image of M87*, the first-ever image of a black hole. That image only added to M87*'s fame.

During these outbursts, astronomers observe mainly the hard and soft spectral states. In the hard state, the spectrum is dominated by a power law-shaped continuum, while in the soft state, the spectrum is dominated by a disc-blackbody emission. However, some black hole XRBs also exhibit an intermediate state in which the hard power-law continuum and a disc thermal emission component make approximately the same contribution to the total spectrum.

Located some 7,800 light years away, GRS 1716−249 is a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) discovered in 1993. The source is known to experience outbursts, and one of them, the most recent, was detected in December, 2016. Astronomers found that during this outburst , GRS 1716−249 approached the soft state three times; however, it never reached the canonical soft state.

But in the constellation of Ophiuchus, about 400 million light-years from Earth, two galaxies are almost ready to become one. 

Both galaxies contain a supermassive black hole in their center, and those are expected to merge as well.

This whole process is difficult to capture on camera, however. Black holes' gravity is so strong that nothing can escape — not even light — so astronomers attempting to see them have to rely on light from the matter that gets sucked in (before it disappears). The first-ever photograph of a supermassive black hole was published in April 2019.

A little more than one year ago, China's Chang'e 4 spacecraft landed on the far side of the Moon. In doing so, it became the first-ever vehicle to make a soft landing on the side of the Moon facing away from Earth.

To mark the one-year anniversary, China released a batch of scientific data and images captured by five scientific payloads aboard the 1.2-ton spacecraft and its small Yutu 2 rover. Since the landing, the rover has driven a little more than 350 meters across the Moon's surface, studying rock formations and taking additional photos. The data was collected over a period of 12 lunar "days," or most of the last year.

I wandered amongst its vast craters, scaled its gently curving hills to get better views, sat on top of Moon boulders, left my footprints upon its fine grey dust. The recently completed "core stage" of NASA's Space Launch System, which dwarfed the hundreds of of NASA and Boeing employees, was to be taken to the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of New Orleans. Space Launch System rockets are expected to eventually take astronauts to the moon as part of NASA's Artemis program.

Blue Origin Opens New Headquarters As It Aims For The Moon, Astronaut Flights | Space

Blue Origin opened a new headquarters in Washington State as the company aims to send private astronauts on suborbital space trips later this year.

The facility has capacity for 1,500 people for operations, as well as research and development. Blue Origin expects an active 2020 as it continues to get its suborbital New Shepard spacecraft ready to carry humans, and it works on its uncrewed "Blue Moon" lander to send payloads to the lunar surface. The company has formed a team with Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Draper to build also a crewed lunar lander for NASA's human Artemis program .

The Moon Boot is the epitome of marmite footwear. It looks a bit like an Ugg on steroids, albeit super-sized, super-laced and super-branded.

They are also incredibly successful, despite the product's polarising aesthetic. The brand has sold over 45 million boots across the globe and still reigns as the world's favourite après-ski boot, 50 years after launching.

Yet, unlike its surf boot competitor, Moon Boot has yet to veer off course from its original design. While Ugg expand their offering to include heels, sandals, trainers and clothing, Moon Boot has done little more than tweak its 1969 design.
