NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has discovered its first Earth-size planet in its star's habitable zone, the range of distances where conditions may be just right to allow the presence of liquid water on the surface. Scientists confirmed the find, called TOI 700 d, using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and have modeled the planet's potential environments to help inform future observations.

NASA Lost Contact With Spacecraft Designed to Study Planets Outside Our Solar System
Mission operators at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, have lost contact with the ASTERIA satellite, a briefcase-sized spacecraft designed to study planets outside our solar system. The last successful communication with ASTERIA, short for Arcsecond Space Telescope Enabling Research in Astrophysics, was on December 5, 2019; attempts to contact it are expected to continue into March 2020.

While the beginning of the week is defined by this line up of observances, the end of the week is all about the line up of planets! It involves Sun, Moon, Mercury, Saturn and Pluto, but because the planets will occupy nearly the same degree on the ecliptic as the Sun they won't be visible to us, but the Moon will be, because it will be at Full on Friday.

NASA High School Intern Helped Spot TESS's First Planet Orbiting Two Stars
Upon finishing his junior year at Scarsdale High School in 2019, Wolf Cuiker joined NASA as a summer intern. While examining data from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), particularly the ones volunteered has marked as eclipsing binaries or systems where two stars are circling around each other, he noticed a signal coming from a system called TOI 1338.
At first, Cuiker thought the signal was caused by the smaller star in the system passing the larger one, but the timing was wrong for it to be an eclipse.

Mount Washington — I have been observing the Sun from my doorstep as it sets into a forested hilltop to the southwest. Here, sunset is close to an hour before horizon-view sunset times. Even though I knew that the Sun is setting about a minute later everyday, I was impressed to notice that the location of the setting Sun has inched more westerly. By the time of Vernal Equinox, March 19, sunset will be due west, out of sight from my location. Sunset today, the 6 th , is at 4:36 p.m.
