(CNN) In a year that seemingly keeps on giving, perhaps it's not so surprising that NASA's newly discovered asteroid called 2020 SW will give earth a not so socially distant pass.

Hayabusa2's Mission isn't Over.

In an expected move, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has announced a mission extension for their Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Hayabusa2 will be sent to rendezvous with another asteroid in a few years time.

It’s target is 1998 KY26 , a near-Earth object (NEO) less than a kilometer in diameter. But it’ll take a while and some maneuvering around other objects in the Solar System to reach its goal. JAXA says the spacecraft will arrive at the asteroid in July 2031.

NASA prepares to touch down on an asteroid 207 million miles away

The process of collecting the sample will take 4.5 hours, and NASA has been going through practice runs ahead of the real touch down next month. The agency says it's ready to go ahead with the touchdown despite the challenges of coronavirus which have forced the mission team to work remotely.

On the day of the event, a few key personnel will monitor from the main Mission Support Area, while other team members will be at other locations to check whether the touchdown has been successful and to confirm whether a sufficiently large sample has been collected.

China to launch asteroid-mining robot | The Independent

Origin Space will launch its first bot aboard a Long March rocket, operated by the China National Space Administration, following a push by China to encourage private companies to begin mining space resources.

The Beijing-based firm has dubbed its NEO-1 machine a "space mining robot", though it is more of a prospector than an actual miner.

It will be used to test technologies and sequences necessary to land on and mine an asteroid for valuable minerals and elements like gold, silver and cobalt.

China Set to Send First Ever Asteroid Mining Robot into Space in November

China is all set to send out the world's first mining robot into space by November this year. A private Beijing company, Origin Space, will be launching this ambitious project. Despite being called an 'asteroid mining robot', it's not going to do any actual mining. The mission is a preliminary assessment, to field-test technologies aimed at the eventual mining of asteroids.

The NEO-1 will most probably be launched as a secondary payload on a Chinese Long March rocket. The spacecraft is quite light by spacecraft standards at 30 kg. It will enter at an orbit around the earth at 500 km altitude. "The goal is to verify and demonstrate multiple functions such as spacecraft orbital manoeuvre, simulated small celestial body capture, intelligent spacecraft identification and control," said Yu Tianhong, Origin Space co-founder in an interview with IEEE Spectrum.

2020 has seen more than its share of disasters — natural, man-made, and some best described as nature/human collaborations — compelling us to reasonably wonder what's next. The recent announcement that a small asteroid is on track to narrowly miss Earth the day before Election Day in November may inspire brand new forms of anxiety. After all, an argument exists that we're overdue for a major collision with an asteroid.

SpaceX's first orbiting spacecraft engine has just fired

After less than three weeks of shipment to Texas, SpaceX says its first Starship Raptor vacuum cleaner engine has completed a “full-term test launch” in the march toward orbital test flights.

The engine is known as the Raptor Vacuum or RVac, and it relies almost entirely on its improved sea level cousin, taking all the turbos and the complex combustion chambers that account for the bulk of the rocket engine. Things begin to diverge below the combustion chamber throat (the narrow portion of the central hourglass-like curve), as SpaceX widens the Raptor’s existing bell nozzle by a factor of five or more.

Scientists Spot Giant Planet Orbiting Dead Star's Corpse - Scientific American

Astronomers have spotted signs of an intact giant planet circling a superdense stellar corpse known as a  white dwarf , a new study reports.

The white dwarf in question, called WD 1856, is part of a three-star system that lies about 80 light-years from Earth. The newly detected, Jupiter-size  exoplanet  candidate, WD 1856 b, is about seven times larger than the white dwarf and zips around it once every 34 hours.

“WD 1856 b somehow got very close to its white dwarf and managed to stay in one piece," study lead author Andrew Vanderburg, an assistant professor of astronomy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,  said in a statement .

A No Man's Sky player found two planets that are smooshed together | PC Gamer

There have been lots of interesting discoveries since No Man's Sky's latest update, Origins , gave the galaxy a makeover. With a few billion new planets and lots of variety added to the wildlife and terrain, players are busy exploring and reporting back on what they find.

Since the first detection of the first exoplanet in 1992, astronomers have found thousands of others. Indeed, they estimate that the Milky Way is home to 40 billion worlds.

So it's easy to imagine that planets must be common in other galaxies, particularly those that seem similar to our own. But when it comes to spotting these planets, there is a problem.

Other galaxies are so far away and the stars crammed into such a small region of space, as seen from Earth, that it is hard to identify individual ones let alone the effects of any planets around them. So extragalactic planets have sadly eluded astronomers.

First candidate for an extragalactic planet identified

In most cases, identifying a planet at such a distance would be extremely difficult, if not impossible. But in this case, the work was made easier due to a host of unique candidate attributes. First, the object lies within a binary system that has either a black hole or neutron star at its center, which happens to be in the process of consuming another star. In so doing, it is emitting a huge X-ray signal, which caught the attention of the researchers. Such sources are rare in the night sky.

There's no wrong answer, really. Even if you narrow it down to just the outer solar system — planets, moons, rings and other cosmic rubble — you'll never get bored. But that abundance of solar system destinations has downsides, of course, since there's little chance of ever flying all the missions scientists can dream of. But dreaming up those missions anyway is a vital piece of space exploration, and one that scientists do regularly.

Japan is now tracking and investigating UFOs

TOKYO - Local Japanese news agencies reported earlier in September that Japan’s Defense Minister Taro Kono has requested the Self-Defense Forces follow new protocols regarding possible interactions or sightings of unidentified flying objects which might pose a threat national security.

In a statement obtained by Japan Times, Kono ordered members of the military beginning Monday, Sept. 14, to record, photograph and investigate any unknown objects that mysteriously enter Japanese airspace.

The laser was reportedly active in the Kingston area of the town at around 10pm. It is unknown who or what was responsible for it as of yet, but some people have given their version of events.

If her story is to believed, on August 7, 1993, Gippsland woman Kelly Cahill saw a UFO and beings from another world.

But her story had something other alien visitations didn't — independent witnesses who could potentially back up her story.

Flaw in Fortigate routers exposing businesses to MITM attacks

On Thursday, network security services provider SAM Seamless Network revealed in a blog post it discovered a serious vulnerability in Fortinet's Fortigate VPN solution that allowed attackers to spoof the default SSL certificate signed by Fortinet and easily re-route the traffic to their servers.

The firm said that the Fortigate router comes with a default SSL certificate that is signed by Fortinet, not by a trusted CA, and uses its serial number as the server name for the certificate. However, the VPN client does not verify the server name and in fact, accepts any certificate that is valid and is issued by either Fortinet or any trusted CA.

According to the manager of the planetarium at the Manitoba Museum, don’t worry — they weren’t UFOs, but new satellites sent into space by American aerospace company SpaceX.

Drones flew over Palo Verde nuclear plant in Arizona — pilots unknown

Security guards at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station west of Phoenix noticed something odd on a September night last year.

You always hear about how robots will eventually take all of our jobs, but are we closer to the future than we think? The idea of robots taking our orders, making our hamburgers, or creating a mixed drink could become a reality.

Professor Dina Zemke from the Miller College of Business at Ball State University did a study called “How to Build a Better Robot for Quick Service Restaurants,” and surveyed people who work in the food service industry their thoughts on robots.

Extending Origami Into Untethered Robots and Morphing Devices

A team of researchers from The Ohio State University and the Georgia Institute of Technology has extended the possibility of origami, the ancient art of paper folding, for modern engineering applications such as untethered robotics and morphing devices.

The researchers demonstrated for the first time a multifunctional, magnetically responsive origami system, possessing distributed, untethered control capabilities. The untethered magnetic actuation separates the power source and controller out of the system, allowing scalable applications.

In 2019, the US car market was again the second largest car market in the world, following China, with the second largest production volume of cars and light vehicles."

The North American countries United States, Canada, and Mexico represent the second largest operational stock of industrial robots in the world after China. Following the US with 293,000 units in 2019, Mexico´s operational stock comes second with about 40,000 units, which is a plus of 11% and Canada – ranking third - with about 29,000 units – plus 2%. Most of the robots in the USA are imported from Japan, Korea, and Europe.

Omnirobotic closes seed round to commercialize AI for factory robots

Increasing levels of autonomy have led to robotics adoption in multiple industries, but manufacturing has yet to benefit from greater flexibility and ease of use, according to Omnirobotic. The Laval, Quebec-based startup today announced that it has closed a seed round of $6.5 million CAD ($5 million U.S.) to further develop and commercialize its AI platform for factory robots.

“The skills gap in manufacturing is getting worse, as documented by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute . In the next decade in the U.S. alone, 2 million jobs will be unfilled that require training, such as welders and machinists,” said Francois Simard, co-founder and CEO of Omnirobotic. “We still need to build bridges or build tractors to grow food. Encapsulating knowhow in a cognitive platform is the only way I know to guarantee this for years to come.”

A robot equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) can excel at the Olympic sport of curling — and even beat top-level human teams.

Players in a curling match slide stones across an ice rink towards targets. Success requires precision and strategy, but the game is less complex than other real-world applications of robotics. That makes curling a useful test case for AI technologies, which often perform well in simulations but falter in real-world scenarios with changing conditions.
