UFO sightings up in 2020: a Michigan expert explains why

In Michigan, Bill Konkolesky, state director of the Mutual UFO Network, says their office got about 233 calls in 2020, up from about 200 the previous year. But before you get too excited, Konkolesky says he's not really in the business of mystery.

"Even on a bad year we can identify about 85 percent of what comes into us, most years closer to 95 percent," he said. "Our credibility is on the line. We're in it for the truth of what may be out there."

U.S. watchdog to evaluate Pentagon’s response to UFO reports - National | Globalnews.ca

The watchdog for the U.S. Department of Defense is evaluating the Pentagon 's response to reports of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena ( UAPs ), the government term for UFOs .

Randolph R. Stone, the assistant inspector general for evaluations, announced the UFO-related probe in a memo published on the Pentagon’s website Monday, less than a month after leaked U.S. navy footage showed “pyramid-shaped” UFOs buzzing a warship. The Pentagon confirmed that the footage is authentic, but did not provide an explanation for what it shows.

Not a UFO - What last night's line of lights in the Ozarks actually means

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Did you see a string of lights in the sky last night? Don't worry, it was not caused by UFOs.

SpaceX launched the satellites Thursday from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida which will help bring the internet to rural areas.

This is not the first time viewers have sent KY3 pictures of the satellites. On April 7, the lights were also reported across the Ozarks.

Maddie Grinder of Mountain Home, Arkansas was one of many people in the Ozarks and all across the nation who's snapped photos or grabbed video of those eerie lights in formation moving across the night sky.

Blue Origin opens up bidding for first 'spectacular' space tourism trip in July |

Blue Origin, billionaire Jeff Bezos' rocket company, said on Wednesday it is targeting July 20 for its first suborbital sightseeing trip on its New Shepard spacecraft, a landmark moment in a competition to usher in a new era of private commercial space travel.

Blue Origin also said it will offer one seat on the first flight to the winning bidder of a five-week online auction, the proceeds of which will be donated to the space firm's foundation.

The New Shepard rocket-and-capsule combo is designed to autonomously fly six passengers more than 62 miles (100 km) above Earth into suborbital space, high enough to experience a few minutes of weightlessness and see the curvature of the planet before the pressurized capsule returns to earth under parachutes.

A 'Right Stuff' for Our Moment of Space Travel - The New York Times

The first third of the book provides a riveting account of the underreported commercial space race, which has up until now lacked a worthy storyteller, though it is replete with the near misses, catastrophes and jockeying between pilots familiar to readers of Norman Mailer's "Of a Fire on the Moon" and Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff . " In these early pages Schmidle takes us through these paces.

At this point, the book stops being solely about space exploration and is richer for it; the account of Virgin Galactic's efforts proceeds but does so in tandem with Stucky's and Schmidle's stories, each man grappling with that uniquely fraught experience: fatherhood. Stucky, recently divorced, is for a time estranged from his children.

NASA Hails China Space Travel As 'Unifying Force,' But U.S. Law Bans Alliance

There's a new major player in the final frontier, but the United States' space agency under President Joe Biden sees an upside to its top competitor's success, even if U.S. scientists remain formally banned from cooperating with their Chinese counterparts.

For decades, the realm of outer space travel was dominated by the U.S. and Russia, a reality set by their Cold War-era space race that ultimately helped fuel historic developments now also being advanced by a range of countries across the globe, including in Europe, India, Israel, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.

Christie's selling a space-aged wine that could fetch $1 million

A bottle of red wine that spent more than a year in space could end up being the most expensive wine ever sold.

Christie's is selling a bottle of Pétrus 2000 that was aged for 14 months aboard the International Space Station (ISS) before returning to Earth in January. And the British auction house estimates will ultimately fetch a price " in the region of $1 million ."

That would make the space-aged vintage the most expensive bottle of wine ever sold. (The current record for a single bottle of wine came in 2018, when anonymous buyers paid $558,000 for a bottle of 1945 Romanee-Conti French Burgandy, sold by Sotheby's.)

Branson Grows Old While Bezos Takes Over Space Travel

Meanwhile, after 15 years of Branson frequently announcing that his Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo was about to fly passengers, the program remains stalled by problematic test flights.

Branson was 54 years old when, in 2004, he announced his quest to be first to offer suborbital rocket rides. It was a characteristically bold project from a guy who always cast himself as a game-changer—most conspicuously by gatecrashing the airline business with sassy and sexy Virgin Atlantic. It married with his image of being a derring-do adventurer up for any physical challenge.

Everyday Americans lining up for space travel - Southern Standard

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Sixty years after Alan Shepard became the first American in space, everyday people are on the verge of following in his cosmic footsteps.

Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin company used Wednesday's anniversary to announce an auction for a seat on the company's first crew spaceflight, launched by a rocket named New Shepard. The Texas liftoff is targeted for July 20 — the date of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic aims to kick off tourist flights next year, just as soon as he straps into his space-skimming, plane-launched rocketship for a test run from the New Mexico base.

Radiation resistance is baked into the Perseverance Mars rover. Here's why that's important.

Think about the number of times your computer on Earth has crashed. Now imagine how challenging that would be during a rover mission on Mars .

All those "lessons learned" from safe mode incidents are now embedded into the new Perseverance rover, the more powerful cousin of Curiosity that started rolling on Mars on March 5.

Recovering from glitches takes technical skill, especially on Mars' dusty, radiation-soaked surface. In many cases, radiation and circuits mix poorly. But that can't be allowed to happen on Mars, where circuits on Perseverance control everything from the cameras to the laser, to the complex system that will cache potentially habitable rock samples for a future sample-return mission.

Evidence of Active Volcanoes on Mars Raises Possibility of Recent Habitable Conditions – "Mars

Recent explosive volcanic deposit around a fissure of the Cerberus Fossae system. Credit: NASA/JPL/MSSS/The Murray Lab

Evidence of recent volcanic activity on Mars shows that eruptions could have taken place in the past 50,000 years, according to new study by researchers at the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and the Planetary Science Institute.

Most volcanism on the Red Planet occurred between 3 and 4 billion years ago, with smaller eruptions in isolated locations continuing perhaps as recently as 3 million years ago. But, until now, there was no evidence to indicate Mars could still be volcanically active.

Elon Musk's first name shows up in 1953 book about colonizing Mars - CNET

Who doesn't love a weird, 60-plus-year-old coincidence? As if there aren't enough headlines about Elon Musk at the moment, a connection between his name and a decades-old book that seemed to eerily predict the billionaire's involvement in Mars exploration resurfaced this week.

And real it is, although as one Twitter user pointed out, "'Elon' referred by Von Braun in the book isn't the name of the person but rather the name of the position something like an elected meritocratic president."

Tiny Volcanoes Are a Big Deal on Mars - Eos

Small volcanoes are surprisingly important for understanding the volcanic history of a planet. On Earth, cinder cones and fissure vents are found all over volcanic terranes and, in many locations, may volumetrically be as important as larger shield volcanoes or stratovolcanoes. The contribution of these smaller volcanic features piqued the interest of Jacob Richardson , an assistant research scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and lead author of the new study.

AEW Learns From Its Booking Mistakes, Why Won't WWE?

Slowly but surely, The Dark Order began to evolve into more of a comedic act. After Brodie Lee was revealed as The Exalted One, its members began to play to their strengths and lean into the gimmick's goofiness.

That disconnect between how the group was initially being presented and how it was being perceived by fans was palpable, but rather than continue to beat a dead horse, AEW went into course correction mode -- and the results were a joy to behold. Thanks to AEW's creative malleability, The Dark Order is now one of the most consistently entertaining acts in the business.

Review: Nembrini Audio Shimmer Delay Ambient Machine

Key Features: Like its name would suggest, the awesome new Shimmer Delay Ambient Machine by Italian developer, Nembrini Audio provides an endlessly onomatopoeic, creatively inclined delay tool, perfect for the budding ambient producer or experimental sound designer or for anyone looking for something left of centre to brighten up a drab arrangement.

In fact, such is the nature of the Shimmer Delay's highly tweakable user interface that its easy to find yourself running single notes and pedal tones through it for hours, simply playing the controls like an instrument, riding the self-oscillations and pitch shifting in real time, just to hear it work its magic.

Dota 2: Queen Of Pain Tips And Tricks | TheGamer

If you're facing a ranged hero , we recommend picking up Scream Of Pain on the first level to easily eliminate creeps. If you get Shadow Strike at level one, they can hit you as you approach them to cast this spell, which is not worth the risk and the damage you take. Naturally, you can add levels to Shadow Strike at any point during the game. The most popular Ability build is shown below.

The Talent Tree is determined by your opponent's matchup and allies . If you lack sufficient physical damage and wish to compensate, you can purchase items that increase your physical damage , but you should choose a Talent Tree that corresponds to your items. If your team requires burst damage combined with magic damage, you should select talents that boost your magic damage and itemize accordingly.

"Would you rather leave someone at the altar or be left at the altar?" The answer to this question and 49 others matched Georgetown University students with their optimal romantic partners through a matchmaking algorithm: the Marriage Pact, which has been implemented at universities nationwide.

A "marriage pact" is an agreement between two people that they will marry each other if they are not married by a certain age or date. But the traditional version of a marriage pact seemed ineffective to Liam McGregor, who co-founded the Marriage Pact in 2017 while a student at Stanford University.
