Recovering from glitches takes technical skill, especially on Mars' dusty, radiation-soaked surface. In many cases, radiation and circuits mix poorly. But that can't be allowed to happen on Mars, where circuits on Perseverance control everything from the cameras to the laser, to the complex system that will cache potentially habitable rock samples for a future sample-return mission.

Evidence of recent volcanic activity on Mars shows that eruptions could have taken place in the past 50,000 years, according to new study by researchers at the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and the Planetary Science Institute.
Most volcanism on the Red Planet occurred between 3 and 4 billion years ago, with smaller eruptions in isolated locations continuing perhaps as recently as 3 million years ago. But, until now, there was no evidence to indicate Mars could still be volcanically active.

For the first few months of 2021, the Martian atmosphere was buzzing with new visitors from Earth. In February, both the UAE Space Agency's Hope probe and China's Tianwen-1 entered Mars' orbit .
On February 19, NASA landed the Perseverance rover with its companion, the Ingenuity helicopter , both of which have been setting new milestones since.

Who doesn't love a weird, 60-plus-year-old coincidence? As if there aren't enough headlines about Elon Musk at the moment, a connection between his name and a decades-old book that seemed to eerily predict the billionaire's involvement in Mars exploration resurfaced this week.
And real it is, although as one Twitter user pointed out, "'Elon' referred by Von Braun in the book isn't the name of the person but rather the name of the position something like an elected meritocratic president."

Tiny Volcanoes Are a Big Deal on Mars - Eos
Small volcanoes are surprisingly important for understanding the volcanic history of a planet. On Earth, cinder cones and fissure vents are found all over volcanic terranes and, in many locations, may volumetrically be as important as larger shield volcanoes or stratovolcanoes. The contribution of these smaller volcanic features piqued the interest of Jacob Richardson , an assistant research scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and lead author of the new study.
