Scientists have discovered the volcano near the planet's equator in the eastern part of Mars' Tharsis volcanic province.

It's still waiting for its official name, but for the moment it's being called Noctis volcano, and measures 280 miles in width.

That's about the same distance as between London and Cornwall and it's a bit taller than the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest.

The volcano can be found in a region called Tharsis which is home to three other giant volcanoes: Ascraeus Mons, Pavonis Mons, and Arsia Mons.

With Europe's new Ariane 6 rocket now at its spaceport in French Guiana , the passengers it will launch to space are getting ready to be added to the top of the tall new rocket. Ariane 6 will launch several satellites, deployers and experiments from space agencies, companies, research institutes, universities and young professionals on its first flight.

"Ariane 6 is designed to be versatile, offering space actors bespoke launch options all while keeping costs down," says Michel Bonnet, head of Ariane 6 missions and system engineering and ESA's lead for the Ariane 6 inaugural flight. "The varied missions launching on the first flight, from nine countries and dozens of organisations, are a perfect demonstration of the team spirit behind this rocket and the design ethos that underpins it."

Former Blue Origin President Leads Helium-3 Moon Mining Mission

Schmitt, now 88, has teamed up with former Blue Origin President Rob Meyerson and former Chief Architect Gary Lai to co-found a company to harvest the isotope from the lunar surface and bring it back to Earth. Their startup, Interlune, aims to collect small bottles of the rare gas and sell it to emerging technology industries that prize the stuff, including developers of quantum computers and nuclear fusion reactors.

"Helium-3 is the only element in the universe that's expensive enough to warrant going to the Moon and bringing it back to Earth," says Meyerson, who is the company's CEO.

WASHINGTON — NASA is revamping a major series of Earth science missions, delaying some and relying more on international partners for others to reduce costs.

As part of NASA's fiscal year 2025 budget proposal released March 11 , the agency said it was restructuring the Earth System Observatory line of missions. Those missions are intended to collect data on "designated observables" identified by the Earth science decadal survey in 2018 .

As recently as December, NASA said it was moving ahead with four of the missions : Atmosphere Observing System (AOS)-Storm, AOS-Sky, Surface Biology and Geology, and Mass Change, now called GRACE-C. A fifth mission, Surface Deformation and Change, was in an extended study phase.

The Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses commercial rocket launches, gave SpaceX the final green light for the mission on Wednesday afternoon.

This test flight comes after two attempts to get the massive Starship vehicle to orbital speeds in 2023 ended in explosions, with the spacecraft and booster erupting into flames before reaching their intended landing sites.

Space Station? Scientists Are Investigating Blood Splatter In Microgravity

The team performed the microgravity experiment on board the Zero Gravity Corporation's modified Boeing 727 parabolic aircraft. This vehicle goes up and down, providing free fall for a short amount of time. That's when the simulation took place.

"With the lack of gravitational influence, surface tension and cohesion of blood droplets are amplified. What this means is that blood in space has a higher tendency to stick to surfaces until a greater force causes detachment. Within the application of bloodstain formation, it means that blood drops exhibit a slower spread rate and, therefore, have shapes and sizes that would not be reflective on Earth," co-author Professor Graham Williams, from the University of Hull, said in a statement .

Scientists are looking for evidence of alien technology in a faraway solar system with the most perfect mathematical alignment and synchrony of planets ever seen.

The solar system, about 100 light years away from ours, has six planets orbiting an orange dwarf star called HD 110067.

Each of the planets, researchers say, orbits in harmony with its adjacent ones in extremely rare perfect synchrony, suggesting they likely remain undisturbed since their formation a billion years ago.

The six planets, scientists found, move similar to a perfectly synchronized symphony known as resonance that is "precise" and "very orderly".

Like all exoplanets discovered by the Kepler space telescope, Kepler 37-b was detected using a technique called the transit method. As faraway planets orbit their stars, they transit — or pass in front of — their stars, creating a slight dimming of the star. For stars and planets in the right position relative to our solar system, scientists can analyze the dimming and infer not only the existence of a planet but also some of its properties — what it's made of, its distance from its star, and its size.

With exoplanets, it's harder to say for sure, and it can be especially difficult to tell if an exoplanet is truly clearing debris and similarly sized objects from its orbit, Barclay said. But with Kepler 37-b, there isn't much doubt, he added.

Exclusive: Significant discovery, made by James Webb telescope, provokes disagreement over conditions on planet's surface

Astronomers have observed a distant planet that could be entirely covered in a deep water ocean, in findings that advance the search for habitable conditions beyond Earth.

"The ocean could be upwards of 100 degrees [Celsius] or more," said Prof Nikku Madhusudhan, who led the analysis. At high atmospheric pressure, an ocean this hot could still be liquid, "but it's not clear if it would be habitable," he added.
