Humanoid Robots Are Coming of Age | WIRED

Today the descendants of those hapless robots are a lot more capable and graceful. Several startups are developing humanoids that they claim could, in just a few years, find employment in warehouses and factories.

Pratt says that if Darpa's challenge were run today, robots would be able to complete the challenges in about a quarter of the 50 minutes it took his robot to complete the course, with few accidents. "From a technical point of view, a lot of enabling technologies have popped up recently," he says.

The search for habitable planets expands | University of Michigan News

A University of Michigan astronomer and his team are suggesting a new way to expand the search for habitable planets that takes into account a zone not previously considered: the space between the star and what’s called soot line in planet-forming disks.

Worlds that form in this region—a disk of dust rotating around a central star from which planets may be built—could have surfaces rich in volatile carbon compounds quite different from Earth’s.

Water Vapor Detected in The Solar System's Asteroid Belt For First Time : ScienceAlert

There's a fair amount of water in the Solar System. Several moons and planets are loaded with it, while comets from the far reaches are packed with the stuff. Where it warms in the heat of the Sun, it sublimates into a gas that drifts into the vacuum of space.

The water is ejected by one of the rare comets in the Main Belt, an object known as Comet 238P/Read, revealing that water from the time of the Solar System's formation has been preserved there. Scientists had thought conditions might be too close to the Sun for much ice to remain.

Star Wars-like volcanic planet discovered orbiting red dwarf star

If you saw "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith," it shouldn't be difficult to imagine a planet completely covered by volcanoes and flowing lava.

"LP 791-18 d is tidally locked, which means the same side constantly faces its star," said Björn Benneke, a co-author and astronomy professor at the Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets at the University of Montreal, who planned and supervised the study.

The robot can change a set of four wheels in 23 minutes. That’s an age compared to what you might expect from a Formula 1 pitstop , but, according to the company, it’s twice as fast as a human under normal operating conditions (read: not a team of mechanics in motorsport).

AI goes to space! New planet discovered outside solar system | Tech News

The study says that an exoplanet can be determined just by looking in protoplanetary disks, the gas around newly formed stars. The research team confirmed the planet using traditional techniques, however, the AI model helped to run simulations and showed exactly where the planet might be.

Jason Terry, the lead author of the study, suggests that the models indicated the potential presence of a planet, as evidenced by multiple images that prominently emphasized a specific area in the disk.
