Ancient humans co-existed with dinosaurs but survived asteroid impact

Ancient humans co-existed with dinosaurs but survived asteroid impact

Researchers from the Universities of Bristol and Fribourg reached this conclusion after studying thousands of placental mammal fossils.

About 66 million years ago, when a giant space rock blasted into Earth, it wiped out all non-avian dinosaurs. And this catastrophic event became known as the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) mass extinction.

French, UK Cyber Watchdogs Say Hackers-for-Hire Are Targeting Law Firms

Mercenary hackers increasingly are targeting law firms in a bid to steal data that could tip the balance in legal cases, French and British authorities say, echoing a Reuters investigation that uncovered the phenomenon last year.

In a pair of reports published over the past week, the cyber watchdog agencies of France and the United Kingdom cataloged an array of digital challenges faced by law firms, including threats posed by ransomware and malicious insiders.

Machine Learning and the Hunt for Exoplanets: A Match Made in the Stars

The search for exoplanets, or planets outside our solar system, has been a hot topic in the field of astronomy for the past few decades.

Machine learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, enables computers to learn from data and make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed to do so.

Robots need better batteries

Mobile robots can dance around a stage, perform graceful acrobatics and even lift heavy objects. But if you watched them strut their stuff for an hour or two, you would see the robots grind to a halt. Like humans, mobile robots eventually exhaust the energy that they carry, and need a recharge.

Alien planet may be hiding at the edge of our solar system | Space

In 1906, astronomer and businessman Percival Lowell launched a search for "Planet X," a hypothetical giant planet orbiting the sun beyond Neptune. Lowell was convinced that Planet X existed based on some supposed irregularities he had observed in the orbits of Neptune and Uranus.

Today, the Planet X hypothesis is largely considered to be discredited . However, that hasn't stopped astronomers from looking for planets in the far reaches of the solar system. And according to a new study, they might be out there — only much farther away than Lowell could have predicted.

Heads up: 7 planets will be in retrograde this summer

Astronomers can take pictures of planets outside of our solar system by using a method called "direct imaging." It involves removing the overwhelming glare of the star the planets orbit. (Courtesy: NASA)

This summer, within our solar system, not one, not two, but a staggering seven planets will be in retrograde.

Amazon’s New Robots Are Rolling Out an Automation Revolution | WIRED

In a giant warehouse in Reading, Massachusetts, I meet a pair of robots that look like goofy green footstools from the future. Their round eyes and satisfied grins are rendered with light emitting diodes. They sport small lidar sensors like tiny hats that scan nearby objects and people in 3D.

Direct Images of Κ»JupiterΚ»s Younger SiblingΚ» - SpaceRef

Astronomers using W. M. Keck Observatory on Maunakea, HawaiΚ»i Island have discovered one of the lowest-mass planets whose images have been directly captured.

The planet, called AF Lep b, is among the first ever discovered using a technique called astrometry; this method measures the subtle movements of a host star over many years to help astronomers determine whether hard-to-see orbiting companions, including planets, are gravitationally tugging at it.

Scientists train fruit-picking robots with silicon raspberries

Raspberries might be delicious but they are notoriously hard to harvest since they are soft and dewy making them easily damaged. But what if robots, equipped with advanced actuators and sensors, could pick them gracefully?

Engineers at EPFL's Computational Robot Design & Fabrication (CREATE) lab are training robots to pick the famous fruit on a silicone version that mimics the real thing.
