Solar system: planets and facts about solar system

Our solar system has always seemed a vast place, even to the most ancient astronomers who knew little of the universe other than what the sun, moon, and stars could reveal to the naked eye.

As our view of the universe got bigger over the millennia, the view of our solar system has gotten smaller and smaller, but in many ways, we actually know less about the solar system as we know it today than our ancestors did of their more limited view of the stars and planets.

The start of the birth of planets in a binary star system observed -- ScienceDaily

Astronomers have observed primordial material that may be giving birth to three planetary systems around a binary star in unprecedented detail.

How would an Earth-like planet look in Alpha Centauri? | Ars Technica

We now know that our nearest neighbor, Proxima Centauri, is host to at least two planets . But we're not sure if there are any planets near Alpha Centauri, a binary system just beyond that. If there are, however, we now know what they might look like.

NASA Funds Research into Use of Advanced Solar Sails to Explore Outer Planets – Parabolic Arc

NASA is funding research into advanced solar sail technology that would allow spacecraft to reach the distant planets such as Uranus and Neptune in less than three years.

230-foot asteroid thought to hit Earth in 2023 will not hit us: NASA

A recently discovered asteroid wider than a hockey rink that had been projected to hit Earth next year actually won't after all.

In January, asteroid 2022 AE1 was discovered by astronomers at the Catalina Sky Survey at the University of Arizona. Not long after that, the European Space Agency noted the 230-foot-wide asteroid was on a collision course with Earth for July 2023.

Backbone of Hera asteroid mission for planetary defense

Hera will fly to the same asteroid system in the aftermath of the impact to perform a close-up " crime scene investigation ," including close-up mapping of DART's crater and assessing the asteroid's make-up and internal structure.

“Tatooine” Planet Seen From Earth

Using radial velocity, astronomers at the 193-centimeter telescope at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence were able to detect the known exoplanet Kepler-16b.

Exoplanets, it turns out, are difficult to take detailed pictures of at this point in time. At best, you get a blocked-out star and a tiny bright dot next to it. Although our telescopes are improving decade by decade, we still have to imagine what these distant worlds might look like.

How many humans can the solar system support?

Today, we know there are not nearly that many multicellular entities, let alone humans, in our solar system (barring some really unfortunate oversight yet to be understood), and we have a vastly better understanding of the possibly habitable real estate.

That doesn't mean that it's not a fun, and even informative, thought exercise to try to estimate the maximum capacity of the solar system for sustaining human populations.

NASA would get $24 billion in new omnibus spending bill | Space

NASA will get just over $24 billion this year, if Congress is able to pass a newly devised omnibus spending bill.

The funding package, which allocates a total of $1.5 trillion throughout the government, would give NASA about $760 million less for fiscal year 2022 than U.S. President Joe Biden requested last year . (The fiscal year runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30.)

Space Station to Host 'Self-Healing' Quantum Communications Tech Demo

SEAQUE will be hosted on the International Space Station by the Nanoracks Bishop airlock. The blue-and-gold brackets attached to the side of the airlock are for external payloads. The technology demonstration will be installed at one of those sites.
