Solar system: planets and facts about solar system

Our solar system has always seemed a vast place, even to the most ancient astronomers who knew little of the universe other than what the sun, moon, and stars could reveal to the naked eye.

As our view of the universe got bigger over the millennia, the view of our solar system has gotten smaller and smaller, but in many ways, we actually know less about the solar system as we know it today than our ancestors did of their more limited view of the stars and planets.

The start of the birth of planets in a binary star system observed -- ScienceDaily

Astronomers have observed primordial material that may be giving birth to three planetary systems around a binary star in unprecedented detail.

Bringing together three decades of study, an international group of scientists have observed a pair of stars orbiting each other, to reveal that these stars are surrounded by disks of gas and dust.

See Venus and Mars pair up in the early morning sky Saturday | Space

Venus will meet up with Mars in the very early morning sky on Saturday (March 12) — here's how you can catch the planetary duo. 

The two planets will appear close to each other in the south-eastern sky as they reach conjunction, meaning they will share the same right ascension or celestial longitude. The pair will be visible at dawn, rising around 4:20 a.m.

How would an Earth-like planet look in Alpha Centauri? | Ars Technica

We now know that our nearest neighbor, Proxima Centauri, is host to at least two planets . But we're not sure if there are any planets near Alpha Centauri, a binary system just beyond that. If there are, however, we now know what they might look like.

To estimate the composition of this hypothetical planet—dubbed α-Cen-Earth—the team developed what they call a devolatilization model. To start, they looked at the amounts of volatile (hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, etc.

NASA Funds Research into Use of Advanced Solar Sails to Explore Outer Planets – Parabolic Arc

NASA is funding research into advanced solar sail technology that would allow spacecraft to reach the distant planets such as Uranus and Neptune in less than three years.

The space agency awarded Mahmooda Sultana of Goddard Space Flight Center with a NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) Phase I grant worth $175,000 to research development of advanced spacecraft for outer planet exploration.
