Pentagon to set up UFO task force - The Hindu

The Pentagon said on Friday that it was setting up a new task force under the U.S. Navy to investigate UFO sightings.

With the creation of the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF), the Defense Department hopes "to improve its understanding of, and gain insight into, the nature and origins of UAPs," spokeswoman Susan Gough said. Rather than little green alien invaders, the U.S. military is actually concerned about "unidentified aerial phenomena" connected with its terrestrial adversaries. Washington is particularly concerned about China's spying capabilities, using drones or other airborne means.

Roswell’s UFO Museum reopens | KRQE News 13

ROSWELL, N.M.  (KRQE) – The UFO Museum has been closed for more than five months. As one of the biggest attractions in the town reopens, it just goes to show how much the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the economy of Roswell.

The UFO Museum finally reopened its doors Monday to visitors, after being closed for months. Visitors were happy they could go somewhere after Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham eased restrictions to the public health order last week . Museum staff said while they were closed, they had a lot of people reach out and show support.

Every year, thousands of people report seeing things in the sky they can't explain. Science fiction offers an explanation: aliens visiting the human species on flying saucers.

The United States government reignited the conversation around UFOs when the Defense Department released video in late April showing footage from Navy in-flight cameras. In a press release , it confirmed that the videos show "unidentified aerial phenomena." The videos were already circulating on the internet for several years, but by releasing them, the DOD confirmed their authenticity and acknowledged that it had no explanation.

Lawmakers want to know if US adversaries behind UFO sightings - Business Insider

US lawmakers are demanding intelligence agencies and the Pentagon share information on "unidentified aerial phenomenon," to include whether these reported incidents could be the work of foreign adversaries.

The unclassified report required by the bill should also identify "any incidents or patterns that indicate a potential adversary may have achieved breakthrough aerospace capabilities that could put United States strategic or conventional forces at risk."

Navy Releases UFO Videos, AI Self-Driving Cars Might Solve These Mysteries

The stated reason for the Department of Defense (DoD) opting to release the videos consisted of wanting to set the record straight about the authenticity of the videos, doing so because the videos had prior been surreptitiously leaked, garnering outsized attention as possibly being fakes, plus some worried that if they were real camera images they might contain Top Secret material, divulging something that should not have been revealed.

Others said that the flying craft shown in the videos wasn't the issue, and instead, it was that the jet fighter plane cameras and the pilot maneuvering proficiency were perhaps considered a confidential matter, thus unintentionally showcasing our existing flight technology and aerial combat techniques.

During his six month stint in orbit in 2010, American astronaut Scott Kelly accidentally started a fire in the toilet of the International Space Station.

The floating habitat's complex filtration system applies an acidic chemical known as a 'pretreat' to spacefarers' urine, and a leak in the system caused a cannonball-sized globe of this acid to leak out when Kelly opened a maintenance panel to see why the toilet wasn't working.

A floating ball of acid isn't an ideal travel companion when you're orbiting the Earth in a sealed tube, so Kelly had to act quickly. He grabbed an old t-shirt to try and soak up the acid – but the water molecules in the sweat on the shirt reacted with the acid, creating a fireball.

Supporting 'the next giant leap': Promontory rocket motor test advances US space travel plans |

NASA and Northrop Grumman successfully conducted a full-scale static fire test of NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket motor, known as Flight Support Booster (FSB-1), in Promontory, Utah, on Sept. 2.

A fiery blast and towering cloud of smoke briefly interrupted the clear desert air of Box Elder County last week, marking another milestone in plans to return Americans to the Moon and deeper into outer space.

NASA baffled by mysterious ridges on Mars

NASA has spent years observing and exploring Mars, but the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter took a picture of a ridged portion of the Martian surface last month that is “puzzling” to researchers.

The image, taken by the HiRise Context camera, was enhanced with color to help correlate rock units, but that has left more questions than answers about the area known as Aureum Chaos.

The team at the University of Arizona, which operates the HiRise camera, offered a suggestion for how the area formed.

Mars & Moon Conjunction September 2020: How to See Them in the Night Sky - Thrillist

Mars will rise around 10pm ET, depending on your location, in the eastern sky. But shortly after midnight, it will have moved further south and will have a close encounter with the moon in the early hours of Sunday, September 6, on the East Coast. The fourth planet from the sun will have a conjunction with the moon that night, meaning you're going to see these two get nice and cozy in the sky.

Mars and the moon will almost be on top of each other. In some parts of the world, Mars will even be seen to disappear behind the moon and reappear on the other side. This is a lunar occultation, but you'll need to be in southern Europe, South America, or western Africa to see the occultation. It will not be visible from the United States.

Most massive black hole merger yet puzzles astronomers | Science | AAAS

The detectors have sensed  dozens of such cataclysms  over the past 5 years, but the one on 21 May 2019 was different. Not only was it the most powerful and distant merger ever seen, but the resulting black hole also belongs to a class of long-sought middleweight black holes, members of the LIGO-Virgo collaboration report today in two new studies.

Stellar-class black holes are typically created when a large star runs out of its nuclear fuel and the churning engine of light and heat stops. Without that outward pressure, the star's outer layers collapse under gravity, triggering a colossal supernova and leaving behind a black hole. But in the very biggest stars, the collapse is even more catastrophic, causing a runaway thermonuclear explosion that destroys the star and leaves nothing behind.

Black holes are compact regions of space so densely packed that not even light can escape. Until now, astronomers had observed them in only two general sizes.

There are "small" ones called stellar black holes that are formed when a star collapses and are about the size of small cities. And there are supermassive black holes that are millions, maybe billions, of times more massive than our sun and around which entire galaxies revolve.

According to astronomers' calculations, anything in between didn't quite make sense, because stars that grew too big before collapse would essentially consume themselves, leaving no black holes behind.

Chabot Space Center's black hole: Money gap prompts auction of universe for $1,000 -

They are selling the universe at Chabot Science and Space Center because the 137-year-old institution, closed to paying customers due to the pandemic, is in something of a financial black hole.

To dig itself out, it’s marketing a romantic dinner for two inside the planetarium. Instead of the usual 400 grammar-school kids on a field trip, it’s just you and your significant other and a roast chicken.

Chabot provided a preview the other morning of what’s included in the deal. You get the regular planetarium show — red laser pointer, giant picture of Orion the hunter high above and the glow-in-the-dark “N” on the wall so you can verify that the North Star is where it ought to be.

A Collision in Space Caused a Black Hole 142 Times Bigger Than the Sun | Travel + Leisure

According to PBS , scientists have observed the collision of two black holes, creating a new size of black hole that has never been seen before.

Rest assured, this massive black hole won’t be consuming our universe like it would in a sci-fi movie. This black hole collision is thought to have occurred over seven billion years ago, and we are just observing it now because it is so far away, according to PBS .

The event was observed in May 2019, when scientists picked up a signal that turned out to be two stellar black holes colliding with each other. The two black holes were 66 times and 85 times the mass of Earth’s sun, PBS reported, resulting in a black hole that was around 142 times bigger than the sun. NASA Patents Faster, Cheaper Route For Traveling to the Moon

The space organization has revealed that it has discovered a new trajectory to the Moon that will get future missions to our celestial neighbor more efficiently.

NASA's new method allows for a small unmanned spacecraft to reach the Moon relatively quickly and on very little fuel. 

The method, which was patented by NASA in June, sees the unmanned spacecraft essentially hitch a ride with communication satellites in order to reach high-Earth orbit before using the Earth's and the moon's gravity to perform a slingshot maneuver to the Moon.

Dance students and instructors from Danza Azteca InLak'ech of Oakland brought the Corn Moon Ceremony and blessing to the SOL Community Farmers Market in Placerville Sunday.

The full moon of September, also known as corn moon or barley moon by some Native American cultures, arrives at harvest time for essential crops like corn. This year the corn moon rose Sept. 2.

OSWEGO — When Man in the Moon Candies first opened in 2018 in the footprint of the former McDonald's Fashions, visitors came in just to check out the building.

Man in the Moon owner Amy Lear said people would breeze through and talk about the spot where they'd brought their wedding gown, or to share memories of shopping with their mother. It's still a place full of memories of the longtime retailer that was a downtown staple for eight decades.

We now know what to call the crewed lunar rover being developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Toyota.

The pressurized moon vehicle , which is expected to launch in the late 2020s, has been nicknamed "Lunar Cruiser," JAXA and Toyota representatives announced in an update last week.

The moniker, a nod to Toyota's Land Cruiser SUV, "was chosen because of the familiar feeling it offers the people involved in the development and manufacture of the vehicle prototype as part of the joint research project as well as the familiarity it will provide the general public," the update reads .

Rare blue moon to grace Halloween sky

Can we agree there are few things that sound creepier than a full moon on Halloween? Of course, we mean "good" creepy.

This year, a blue moon will fall on Halloween -- and it's the first blue moon we'll experience since the last one on March 31, 2018.

A blue moon, in case you're wondering, isn't blue in color at all — unless you're talking about the other blue moon, which we'll fill you in on shortly. A blue moon, by the most popular definition, according to meteorologist Paul Gross, is when two full moons appear in a single month.
