NASA’s Scientists and Volunteers Tackle the October 14 Solar Eclipse - NASA Science

Did you see October 14th's solar eclipse? Most of the time we can easily forget that we are on a planet spinning and orbiting in space with other celestial bodies. Watching the Moon move across the face of the Sun reminds us of our place in the solar system.

Several NASA science teams and many NASA volunteers used the October 14 eclipse to collect data and test observation protocols, software, hardware, and logistics. They met enthusiastic crowds of people taking in the spectacle and making unique observations.

States Where Aliens Are Most Likely to Land (According to Movies)

Some parts of the U.S. are more likely to be visited by aliens than others if movies are any indication of what we can expect from extra-terrestrials.

It's probably not a surprise California and New York are the top two states featured as arrival points for aliens on the big screen.

The Day Before Oct.

It swiftly became clear that Ashkenazi Jews were targeted in the cyberattack, although the reasons were as yet unclear. The data included a display name, sex, birth year and details about genetic ancestry, but apparently not raw genetic data.

The hackers posted a data sample on the BreachForums platform on October 4, claiming to have stolen one million data points belonging solely to Ashkenazi Jews. But hundreds of thousands of people with Chinese ancestry were also caught in the net, according to Wired .

UFO or UF-No: What Would Take for Aliens to Visit Our Solar System? ‹ Literary Hub

UFO or UF-No: What Would Take for Aliens to Visit Our Solar System? ‹ Literary Hub

I'm going to give you the bad news first. The distances between stars are so large that they might be impossible to routinely cross. Sure, maybe you send robot probes that reach their target in two hundred years (and then you need another century or so for a message to get back).

This is the kind of landscape we have to deal with when we try to navigate the question of aliens and interstellar travel. We absolutely, positively know the distances between the stars. We also know for certain that the universe imposes a speed limit when it comes to crossing those distances.

NASA can't open its OSIRIS-REx asteroid capsule yet, but its outside holds more than enough ...

Sept. 24 was a big day for NASA, when an orange-and-white capsule containing pieces of an asteroid landed on Earth, charred from its ultrahigh-speed fall through our atmosphere.

Shot into space as part of the agency's OSIRIS-REx mission in 2016 , the capsule was enclosed for years within a spacecraft that made a 4-billion-mile-long journey to reach Bennu.

Giant planet ‘destabilization’ may have coincided with the birth of Earth's moon

A long-ago reshuffling of the giant planets in our solar system may have been instrumental in giving Earth its moon.

For decades, planetary scientists have hypothesized that Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune were born much closer to the sun and that gravitational interactions among those planets jolted them into their contemporary trajectories ( SN: 5/10/22 ).

NASA’s Innovative Rocket Nozzle Paves Way for Deep Space Missions - NASA

NASA recently built and tested an additively-manufactured – or 3D printed – rocket engine nozzle made of aluminum, making it lighter than conventional nozzles and setting the course for deep space flights that can carry more payloads.

Under the agency's Announcement of Collaborative Opportunity , engineers from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, partnered with Elementum 3D, in Erie, Colorado, to create a weldable type of aluminum that is heat resistant enough for use on rocket engines.

NASA’s Lucy Spacecraft Preparing for its First Asteroid Flyby - NASA Science

NASA's Lucy spacecraft is preparing for its first close-up look at an asteroid. On Nov. 1, it will fly by asteroid Dinkinesh and test its instruments in preparation for visits in the next decade to multiple Trojan asteroids that circle the Sun in the same orbit as Jupiter.

Dinkinesh, less than half a mile, or 1 kilometer, wide, circles the Sun in the main belt of asteroids located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Lucy has been visually tracking Dinkinesh since Sept. 3 ; it will be the first of 10 asteroids Lucy will visit on its 12-year voyage.
