Astronomy VLOG: What the 2020s Mean for Space Travel | WAVY.com

The 2010's were an important decade for astronomy, NASA and the private industry. During this past decade, we discovered Pluto for the first time, the Space Shuttle launched for the final time and the long time Mars rovers went silent.

This is the decade when I became more and more interested in backyard astronomy, looking up through a telescope, checking out the planets, seeing my first rocket launches from Kennedy Space Center and Wallops Island Flight Facility , this is why I am creating astronomy videos, to share my love of astronomy! Before we get into why I think this decade was so important, let’s recap what we have seen happen in these past 10 years.

Space, climate change and indoor farming: the future of food is in this tomato | TheHill

Using the gene-editing technology known as CRISPR, scientists have created a new cherry tomato plant that bears its fruit in tight clusters on short vines. This new look isn't just for show — taking up less real estate will make these tomatoes more suitable for futuristic applications like indoor farming and even space travel, Popular Mechanics reports .

To achieve the grape-like bunches, researchers tweaked three genes in the cherry tomato's DNA. Two of the genes control how much the plant grows and when it flowers and fruits. When scientists altered these first two genes alone, the resulting plant produced just a few icky-tasting tomatoes on shortened stems. But once the researchers identified the third gene they were able to get the tasty red fruits in abundant bunches.

NASA TV to Air US Cargo Ship Departure from Space Station

Dragon will fire its thrusters to move a safe distance from the station, then execute a deorbit burn as it heads for a parachute-assisted splashdown around 3:04 a.m. Monday , Jan. 6, in the Pacific Ocean southwest of Long Beach, California . The splashdown will not air on NASA TV.

Dragon launched on the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket Dec. 5 from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida and arrived at the space station two days later.

Watch NASA's Mars 2020 Rover Ace Its 1st Test Drive (Video) | Space

NASA's Mars 2020 rover has taken its first test drive, representing a significant milestone in preparing to launch to the Red Planet next summer. 

A new video from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) shows the rover rolling forward and backward, and turning around in a circle for the very first time on Dec. 17. The short-distance drive test took place in a clean room at JPL, where the rover was built. NASA engineers tested the rover's driving capabilities for more than ten hours, according to a statement from the space agency.

Former Mars Tech Exec Is P&G's New CIO

This month, $92 billion consumer packaged goods (CPG) company Procter & Gamble named Vittorio Cretella as chief information officer. He will replace Javier Polit on January 7.

Cretella has run his own consulting firm, VCAdvisory, since retiring from Mars Incorporated in 2017 after 25 years with the company, the last four as CIO. He has consulted to a number of CPG companies as well as logistics companies.

NASA Photo Shows Alien Insect Nest On Mars, UFO Expert Claims

The photo that caught Waring's attention was taken by the rover on Sol 106 of its mission. According to the details of the image, it was captured near the Gusev crater on Mars. Like the other images taken by NASA's rovers on Mars, the photo features different sized rocks scattered across Mars' desert-like surface.

Based on the photo, the structure appears to be very small and has an odd shape. It can be seen perched on top of one of the rocks shown in the photo. Due to the object's strange appearance, Waring claimed that it's most likely a nest built by small alien organisms on Mars.

The Force is strong with Google Maps, as a Redditor recently discovered . The Palo Alto giant's navigation service has a new Star Wars-themed addition aimed at making exploring our solar system a little bit cooler. When switching between planets, you now see a new animation similar to the one you might have encountered when the Millenium Falcon jumps into hyperspace.

The company has, in partnership with NASA and the European Space Agency, offered the ability to explore more than just our planet since 2017 . As the announcement from back then explains, you can check out the feature for yourself by continuing to zoom out as far as possible on the Maps website on a PC, and enabling satellite view. You'll then get a list of locations you can explore, and that's where you can find the new animation, by switching between the different planets and moons.

Stargazing: Water bears may hold the secret to human survival on Mars

Earlier this year, an Israeli lunar lander carried thousands of tardigrades on board as a test to see if they are capable of surviving the harsh conditions of the lunar surface. The craft crashed, but these little guys are so tough, scientists believe that many likely survived that crash.

Water bears may hold the answer. Or at least their genes. Scientists studying tardigrades have discovered many of their genetic secrets of survival, and now some have suggested that incorporating tardigrade genes into humans may make it possible for us to survive more easily on Mars or even alien planets.

The crowd gathered in downtown Huntsville before 8 a.m. that July morning in 1969. By the time three men returned safely from the moon, 12,000 people were celebrating outside the courthouse.

India to launch 3rd moon mission next year - Xinhua | English.news.cn

NEW DELHI, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- India will launch its third mission to the moon in the year 2020, the Hindustan Times reported on Tuesday,

The newspaper quoted India's junior minister for the department of space Jitendra Singh as saying that third lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 will attempt a soft landing on the moon again.

"Yes, the lander and rover mission will happen in 2020. However, as I have said before, the Chandrayaan-2 mission cannot be called a failure as we have learnt a lot from it," Singh was quoted as having said.

SpaceX's Starship could take humans to Moon within next decade | Inverse

S tarship, the stainless steel behemoth set to send humans to Mars, could end up taking humans to the Moon in just five years time .

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk made the declaration back in March 2019, amid growing interest in what the company was developing at its Boca Chica facility in Texas. Asteroid 'attack': Scientists eye space rock collision | Fox News

The European Space Agency has received approval to aid NASA in its  asteroid deflection plan, the upcoming Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission.

According to the ESA's website, the European space ministers have approved the agency's plan to build and launch the Hera spacecraft, which will visit the Didymos asteroid system. NASA's DART spacecraft is slated to collide with the smaller Didymoon asteroid, which orbits Didymos, sometime near the end of 2022.

The Public Helped NASA Pick a Landing Site on Asteroid Bennu | Digital Trends

Citizen scientists have helped to find the perfect landing spot for the OSIRIS-REx craft on asteroid Bennu, orbiting an average of 105 million miles from the sun.

NASA announced it had selected a landing site on Bennu earlier this month, after selecting four candidate landing sites . The asteroid is proving more challenging to land on than had been anticipated, however, as it does not have the flat, smooth surface that the researchers had thought they would find. Instead, the terrain is very rocky, with many large and small boulders that could prove hazardous to landing spacecraft.

New weekly educational series focuses on comets and asteroids - RocketSTEM

I ce and Stone 2020 is a new weekly series of educational material focusing on some of the small bodies of the solar system – comets and asteroids. The Earthrise Institute , a non-profit educational organization founded by Comet Hale-Bopp co-discoverer Alan Hale, is partnering with RocketSTEM and the La Cumbres Observatory to release the material for FREE online so that all teachers, students and parents worldwide have access to it.

Japan's ultra-low orbiting satellite recognized in Guinness World Records - Xinhua |

TOKYO, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Japan's Tsubame satellite, known for its ultra-low orbiting capabilities, has been recognized in the Guinness World Records as achieving the "lowest altitude by an Earth observation satellite in orbit," Japan's space agency said Monday.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), confirmed that as part of its test mission, Tsubame, from Dec. 23, 2017, to Oct. 1, 2019, flew at an orbital altitude of 167.4 km.

Just about a year ago, SpaceX sent the rocketry equivalent of a clown car to space: A rocket crowded with more than 60 small satellites. Inside one of them, Excite, were even more. It was actually a satellite made of other satellites, all clones of each other, all capable of joining together and working together. It was one of the first in-space tests of such a contraption—but in the coming years, this modular approach is likely to show up on more and more missions.

Safety in a spacecraft is crucial for the success of long-term mission to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Combustion research on the station helps scientists understand how a variety of materials burn and how flames expand in weightlessness. NASA Flight Engineer Christina Koch used the Microgravity Science Glovebox today observing how different fabrics burn under controlled conditions. Results could improve fire safety on Earth and in space.

Iridium would pay to deorbit its 30 defunct satellites — for the right price - SpaceNews.com

WASHINGTON — Iridium Communications completed disposal of the last of its 65 working legacy satellites Dec. 28, while leaving open the possibility of paying an active-debris-removal company to deorbit 30 that failed in the decades since the operator deployed its first-generation constellation.

McLean, Virginia-based Iridium started deorbiting its first constellation, built by Motorola and Lockheed Martin, in 2017, as it replaced them with second-generation satellites from Thales Alenia Space.

The "SIASAIL-I" solar sail, developed by the Shenyang Institute of Automation under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has successfully verified many key technologies in orbit.

The solar sail is a spacecraft powered by the reflected light pressure of the sun on the membrane. It does not consume additional chemical fuel and working medium during navigation, and has the characteristics of small mass, large collection-expansion ratio, low cost, low power consumption and long-range.

Orbit Fun Center responds to large outbreak of fights Saturday night

HUBER HEIGHTS — Police called for all available assistance after responding to the Orbit Fun Center Saturday night to find over 200 juveniles fighting in the parking lot, according to a release.

Bad Astronomy | The trail of Phaethon

Did you catch any of the Geminid meteors in mid-December? It's one of the best meteor showers of the year, occurring when the Earth plows through a debris trail left behind by the asteroid Phaethon as it orbits the Sun and tiny bits of asteroidal material burn up in our atmosphere. Sadly, this year was seriously hampered by the nearly full Moon, so the show from Earth wasn't as good as it could've been.

But from space, the story is different. Really different: A spacecraft designed to investigate the Sun (which, I'll note, is significantly brighter than your typical meteor) saw the Geminids …. Kinda. Not the meteoroids themselves, but the combined glow of their dust trail orbiting the Sun millions of kilometers away .

This “Stellar Engine” Would Move an Entire Solar System

But what if scientists discover that Earth is threatened by an entire asteroid shower? Or that some other cosmic phenomenon, such as nearby star going supernova, is on track to destroy the planet?

In those instances, our survival might depend not on stopping the destructive event, but on getting the hell out of its way — and now, an astrophysicist has designed a stellar engine that could theoretically move Earth's entire solar system from one part of the Milky Way to another.

Scientists Have Calculated How Long It'll Take to Reach Distant Stars

A team of scientists—Coryn Bailer-Jones of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Switzerland and Davide Farnocchia of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory—have done the calculations. Essentially, the pair found a way to chart how long it would take a spacecraft to get from our humble solar system to the next system over, according to a paper uploaded to the pre-print server arXiv.

Using this data and data about the projected paths of both the voyager spacecrafts as well as Pioneer 10 and 11, which are careening toward the outer reaches of the solar system, the researchers were able to create a timeline of when these crafts might reach distant star systems. For those eager to visit other worlds, brace for some bad news.

'A nice Christmas comet': A new interstellar object has entered our solar system |

On August 30, Gennady Borisov, an astronomer with the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory spotted an interstellar object coming into our solar system. Shortly after its discovery, NASA’s scout system noted that the object’s orbit was highly unusual compared to its predecessor, Oumuaamua.

When Oumuamua was discovered back in 2017, it opened the door to new information about how interstellar objects travel through the solar system on a regular basis. Unlike Oumuamua though, this second deep space object will be much more trackable, and for a longer period of time.

An incredible animation by a planetary scientist shows how fast each planet spins by putting them

A video by planetary scientist James O'Donoghue shows a slice of every planet in the solar system spinning on one giant globe. The animation provides a comparison of how quickly (or slowly) each planet rotates. Jupiter's Great Red Spot zips around 2.4 times faster than Earth, while Venus spins so slowly you can't tell it's moving backwards. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.
