This spring, astronomers revealed the first image ever taken of a black hole, bringing a decades-long effort to a dramatic conclusion. The image offers humanity its first glimpse of the gas and debris that swirl around the object's event horizon, the point beyond which material disappears forever. A staple of science fiction has finally become visibly real.
"We are delighted to be able to report to you today that we have seen what we thought was unseeable," said Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) founding director Shep Doeleman when he announced the finding in April. The team of scientists made their announcement simultaneously in seven different countries, accompanied by a series of scientific papers published at the same time in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

In 2019, scientists around the world pulled off some impressive feats: They imaged a supermassive black hole for the first time, debuted two treatments for the Ebola virus , and launched a spacecraft into orbit that's powered by sunlight alone.
Over the past year, researchers have also discovered a hidden continent , captured video of a giant squid in its deep-sea habitat, and sent a probe to an asteroid 5.5 million miles from Earth.

The Black Hole was formed by Rob Rivera and some friends back in 1996, who set the tone for a rowdy, at times aggressive group of Raiders loyalists that grew and grew and now dominates sections 104-107 along the southern end zone.
"This place is legendary," said Rivera, the Black Hole president. "There are so many good times and good memories with good people that it's hard to pick one, two or even three. …There are probably some that we can't repeat."
Money should not go into black hole to fix FAI - Bruton
Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton has said taxpayer's money should not be paid into a "black hole" in order to fix the FAI's problems.
Speaking this afternoon in Dublin, Mr Bruton also insisted that nobody wanted to see the association go into examinership or liquidation, which FAI Executive Lead Paul Cooke yesterday said was a possibility.
"I have no doubt that, as the Minister himself (Shane Ross) has said, he does not want to see examinership or liquidation as the way forward for the FAI," said Minister Bruton.
