However, a bigger concern over the coming decade is a looming demographic "time bomb" stemming from the country's fertility rate, one of the world's lowest.
The Bank of Korea projected in December that gross domestic product would grow 2.4% next year, up from an estimated 2.0% rise in 2019. Private sector economists are making similar forecasts, with JPMorgan seeing a 2.3% expansions.

From crash landings to out-of-this-world cotton, 2019 was a big year for lunar exploration. Previously, only the U.S., Russia and China had managed to land successfully on the moon. But now other national space agencies are charging ahead with their own science goals, and private companies of all sizes are finding ways to join in. Not to be left out, NASA is renewing its own plans for lunar exploration .
The lunar lander Beresheet made history this year, though not exactly how its creators intended. Israeli nonprofit SpaceIL, teaming up with state-owned defense company Israel Aerospace Industries, built and operated the craft. SpaceIL was founded for one main purpose: getting to the moon. It was a response to Google's Lunar XPRIZE, which in 2007 promised $20 million to a company that could land gently on the moon and complete a small series of tasks.

On April 11 2019, the Israeli lander Beresheet crashed on the Moon with several thousand dehydrated tardigrades on board. The millimeter-long and eerily cute 'water bears' were part of a lunar library put together by the Arch Mission Foundation , a nonprofit intent on archiving everything on the planet just in case we need a back-up copy some day. Other items on board included a copy of the entire English-language Wikipedia, and a sample from India's sacred Bodhi tree .
