U.S. Army Tests Robots For Future Combat

FORT IRWIN, California—For as long as the United States has had an army, U.S. infantry soldiers have stuck by one motto: "Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes."

But fighting on the U.S. Army's largest training ground last month, Lt. Isaac McCurdy and his platoon of infantry troops, playing a fictional enemy of the United States, found themselves up against a very different kind of foe: one with camera lenses for eyes and sheet metal for skin.

Driving on eight screeching wheels and carrying enough firepower on their truck beds to fill a small arms depot, a handful of U.S. Army robots stormed through the battlefield of the fictional city of Ujen.

Crew For Blue Origin's 7th Human Spaceflight Includes US' 1st Black Astronaut Candidate

Among the six are former U.S. Air Force Capt. Ed Dwight, who was selected as the nation's first Black astronaut candidate back in 1961, according to Blue Origin.

The NS-25 crew will fly aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard vehicle, a reusable rocket-capsule combo that takes passengers on brief trips to suborbital space. As its name suggests, NS-25 will be the 25th overall mission for New Shepard, which conducts robotic research flights as well as tourism jaunts.

NASA Picks 3 Companies To Help Astronauts Drive Around The Moon

Space agency officials announced on Wednesday that they have hired three companies to come up with preliminary designs for vehicles to take NASA astronauts around the lunar south polar region in the coming years. After the astronauts return to Earth, these vehicles would be able to self-drive around as robotic explorers, similar to NASA's rovers on Mars.

The self-driving capability would also allow the vehicle to meet the next astronaut mission at a different location.

"Where it will go, there are no roads," Jacob Bleacher, the chief exploration scientist at NASA, said at a news conference on Wednesday. "Its mobility will fundamentally change our view of the moon."

Notably, most asteroids reside in a space called asteroid belt. This lies in the space between Mars and Jupiter.

Having said that, this did not become a permanent residence for many asteroids that got dislodged from it due to various reasons, including the gravitational pull of passing planets. Rep. Judy Chu speaks at the Planetary Science Caucus inaugural event held on March 5. Chu said in a press release that the caucus will highlight and educate about past, present and potential space pursuits to garner support and continue strides in research and exploration.

Following a two-year dormancy, the Congressional Planetary Science Caucus was re-established in the 118th Congress in early March to accumulate support for planetary science research.

Co-chairs and Reps. Judy Chu (D-Calif.) and Don Bacon (R-Neb.) are partnering with The Planetary Society to form the caucus, or formal interest group, according to The Planetary Society's press release.

New Star System Discovered Orbiting Our Milky Way Galaxy • Earth.Com

A team of astronomers have made an astonishing discovery — UMa3/U1 — the faintest star system ever observed orbiting our galaxy, the Milky Way .

Dubbed Ursa Major III / UNIONS 1 (UMa3/U1), it’s an incredibly dim and ancient group of stars located 30,000 light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major (which contains the Big Dipper).

According to the research team from Yale University and the University of Victoria , UMa3/U1 was invisible for so long because it’s incredibly faint and small. We’re talking a mere 60 stars spanning just about 10 light-years across.

This Is The Best Way To Escape The Solar System And Get To Interstellar Space

One important aspect that we are completely ignorant of is the shape of the heliosphere . The name suggests a spherical shape but we are not actually sure it is. Models suggest that it might be stretched, or even crescent-shaped, instead of spherical. Researchers have now worked out where best to send a probe to understand the heliosphere.

"Without such a mission, we are like goldfish trying to understand the fishbowl from the inside," first author Dr Sarah A. Spitzer, from the University of Michigan, said in a statement .

The galactic radiation affects the shape of the heliosphere, making it directional. There's the nose side in the solar direction of motion, where the heliosphere is closest to the Sun. And there's the tail, that extends a bit like the wake of a boat. A mission proposal in 2021 considered possible direction and assumed a probe 45 degrees from the nose was optimal. This new work disagrees.

In the protoplanetary disk around SAO 206462, the team spotted the signals of a forming planet, but with a twist: It wasn't the planet they were expecting to see.

"Several simulations suggest that the planet should be within the disk, massive, large, hot and bright. But we didn't find it. This means that either the planet is much colder than we think, or it may be obscured by some material that prevents us from seeing it," Cugno continued. "What we have found is a different planet candidate, but we cannot tell with 100%

SpaceX later also scuttled launch attempts on both Thursday and Friday as well. The company stated on social media that “we will announce a new launch date once confirmed on the Range.”

This will be the 15th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, tail number B1071 in the SpaceX fleet. It previously launched two SmallSat Transporter rideshare mission, a pair of missions for the National Reconnaissance Office and NASA's ocean-observing SWOT payload among others.

Following liftoff from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E), B1071 will land on the SpaceX droneship, 'Of Course I Still Love You,' a little more than eight minutes into flight. This will mark the 87th landing on OCISLY and the 289th booster landing to date.
