Schmitt, now 88, has teamed up with former Blue Origin President Rob Meyerson and former Chief Architect Gary Lai to co-found a company to harvest the isotope from the lunar surface and bring it back to Earth. Their startup, Interlune, aims to collect small bottles of the rare gas and sell it to emerging technology industries that prize the stuff, including developers of quantum computers and nuclear fusion reactors.
"Helium-3 is the only element in the universe that's expensive enough to warrant going to the Moon and bringing it back to Earth," says Meyerson, who is the company's CEO.
