Engineers build a lower-energy chip that can prevent hackers from extracting hidden information

Current methods that can prevent some side-channel attacks are notoriously power-intensive, so they often aren't feasible for internet-of-things (IoT) devices like smartwatches, which rely on lower-power computation.

Now, Maji and his collaborators have built an integrated circuit chip that can defend against power side-channel attacks while using much less energy than a common security technique.

Red Cross says ... hackers exploited unpatched vulnerability –

The recent cyberattack on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) , which compromised the data of more than 515,000 "highly vulnerable" people, was likely the work of state-sponsored hackers.

In an update published on Wednesday , the ICRC confirmed that the initial intrusion dates back to November 9, 2021, two months before the attack was disclosed on January 18, adding that its analysis shows that the intrusion was a “highly-sophisticated” targeted attack on its systems

Scientists spot 10,000th medium near-Earth asteroid in planetary defense milestone | Space

Scientists watching the skies for asteroids that may threaten Earth have hit a new milestone, spotting the 10,000th sizable space rock that circles the sun near Earth's orbit.

The detection comes as part of NASA's ongoing planetary defense work, which discovers and monitors space rocks in the inner solar system to assure that no large asteroid is on course to impact Earth.

An Asteroid has Been Discovered With Three Moons! - Universe Today

Planets aren't the only celestial objects with moons – asteroids can have them too. They are usually other, smaller asteroids in orbit around a larger central one. Now, a team of Thai and French astronomers found an asteroid system with three satellites.

Their designations reflect the year they were first observed, which shows that S/2014(130) 2 sat unobserved in a dataset for over seven years.

Insignificant asteroid still something to ponder, Jesuit says

A rock nearly five billion kilometres from Earth circling the Sun in a long ellipse once every 300 years might not be breaking news, but Jesuit astronomer Fr. Richard Boyle believes it's worth thinking about.

Boyle discovered this particular Trans Neptunian Object in December using the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope on Mount Graham in Arizona. His images and data were then analyzed by Lithuanian astrophysicist Kazimieras Cernis of Vilnius University. The object is romantically named "2021 XD7.

What if… an Asteroid Was Headed For Earth? | by KD Writes | Feb, 2022 | DataDrivenInvestor

D on't Look Up is a satirical Netflix drama about what would hypothetically happen if an asteroid was headed for earth. Watching the movie, made me wonder… what if an asteroid really was heading our way? Would we really only know 6 months prior to the event?

After the movie, I fell deep into a hole researching this topic all night and thought I'd share some insights with my readers.

10 Things in Space That Come in Twos – NASA Solar System Exploration

This February’s calendar has lots of twos. There was 02-02-2022 and now 02-22-2022 – which some people are calling “Twosday.” To mark this day of duos, we bring you our list of things in the solar system that come in twos, or pairs.

DART’s target is NOT a threat to Earth . This asteroid system is a perfect testing ground to see if intentionally crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid is an effective way to change its course, should an Earth-threatening asteroid be discovered in the future.

Star twinkles 18 times in new James Webb Space Telescope image | Space

The James Webb Space Telescope finished the first major stage in its long process of aligning the observatory's 18-segmented primary mirror.

A single star that the observatory looked at was deliberately rendered 18 times into a hexagonal shape.

"The resulting image shows that the team has moved each of Webb’s 18 primary mirror segments to bring 18 unfocused copies of a single star into a planned hexagonal formation," NASA officials wrote in a blog post Friday (Feb. 18).

Things About Space That Movies Get Wrong

Space has long enthralled and fascinated humanity, quite likely ever since the first human looked up at the night sky and saw bright dots in a vast ocean of darkness. Within the last century, humanity's knowledge and awareness about what lies beyond Earth has greatly increased.

That said, there's still a lot about space that needs to be discovered and understood. In works of fiction and popular culture — especially in movies — the gaps in man's knowledge of space have been filled by creativity and speculation.

Poll: 84% of Florida voters support current rooftop solar system - Tampa Bay Business Journal

As lawmakers look to bring an end to net metering in Florida, a recent poll shows voters overwhelmingly support net metering and other incentives for solar energy.

Data released Tuesday in a new Mason-Dixon poll shows 84% of Florida voters support net metering, an existing practice in which solar panel owners who generate more energy than they use may sell the excess energy to utility panels at the retail rate the utilities would charge to use that amount

Fed-up Texans are creating their own tiny power grids. Here's how.

Sam Bryan talks about the battery panels in the back yard of the new solar panel power system he installed on the roof his two story 1930's home Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022 in Houston, TX.

The same transformer has long had issues, he said, leading to blackouts at Bryan's house and those of his neighbors several times a year. But in January, Bryan's lights stayed on, thanks to 43 photovolatic solar panels bolted onto his roof and a battery system stored in his garage.

Where on Earth Did the Water Come From?

Evidence from the analysis of lunar samples suggest that although the Earth and moon formed from a giant impact, they mostly retained their primordial abundances of volatile elements, including water. Credit: Image by Adam Connell/LLNL

Is it time NASA sent an orbiter to study the other blue planet in our solar system? Proposals for missions to study the ice giant planet Neptune and its mysterious moon Triton have been on NASA's to-do list for over a decade, but nothing has happened until now.

A mission to explore one of the ice giants — Uranus or Neptune — was one of the three priorities set out by the last Decadal Survey in 2010, along with Jupiter's moon Europa and a sample return mission to Mars.
