In an ultraviolet glow, auroras on Mars spotted by UAE orbiter

In an ultraviolet glow, auroras on Mars spotted by UAE orbiter

The United Arab Emirates' Hope probe , which arrived at Mars in early February, spotted the scattered glow of auroras in the Martian night sky.

Auroras occur when charged particles from space interact with atoms in the atmosphere, energizing them and causing them to glow. On Earth, this plays out as the northern and southern lights.

NASA's Curiosity Rover Finds Patches of Rock Record Erased, Revealing Clues

A self-portrait of NASA's Curiosity rover taken on Sol 2082 (June 15, 2018). A Martian dust storm has reduced sunlight and visibility at the rover's location in Gale Crater.

This evenly layered rock photographed by the Mast Camera (Mastcam) on NASA's Curiosity Mars Rover shows a pattern typical of a lake-floor sedimentary deposit not far from where flowing water entered a lake.

Sols 3171-3172: Bingo, Drill Hole #32 on Mars! – NASA's Mars Exploration Program

Regardless of whether we drop to CheMin, the science team was still able to plan a number of scientific observations to help monitor the atmosphere, detect changes in our workspace associated with the drill activities, and continue to characterize the terrain around us.

As the APXS strategic planner, I had a relatively quiet day from a planning perspective. We are not able to use the APXS while we have drill sample cached. However, I made good use of the time by starting to plan APXS observations we would like to make before we leave this location.

Govt. securities come calling - BR Research - Business Recorder

The government has been generous to big businesses, in this budget. One of the steps to encourage direct investment of businesses and high net worth individuals (HNIs) in government securities is to reduce the tax on the profits in government securities to 15 percent.

One obvious advantage is to have higher direct investment in government securities which will give competition to banks and may improve yields.

Hitting the Books: How NASA selected the first Lunar Rover to scoot across the moon | Engadget

All through 1962 and into 1963, both GM and Bendix kept an eye on the Surveyor program. Sure enough, come summer, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory laid out its requirements for a hundred-pound, remote-controlled rover that it wanted to stash aboard the landers.

The short deadline weeded out the dilettantes. In October the two companies left standing—GM and Bendix—started work under contract. GM was ready with its six-wheeled design.

Repurposed communications satellites could help save humanity from an asteroid impact | Space

Large satellites used for TV broadcasting could be quickly and easily repurposed as asteroid deflectors if a space rock were to threaten Earth, according to a study by the European aerospace company Airbus.

The study, part of a mission concept called Fast Kinetic Deflection (FastKD), was commissioned by the European Space Agency (ESA), as part of its effort to prepare for an apocalyptic scenario that will certainly happen one day (even though that day might be in a very distant future).
