SpaceX is launching over 200 experiments to space with Crew-3 astronauts on Halloween | Space

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Four astronauts are headed to the International Space Station (ISS) this Halloween (Oct. 31), where they'll spend six months conducting research for scientists back on Earth.

NASA astronauts Raja Chari, who will command the mission, Tom Marshburn and Kayla Barron, along with European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Matthias Maurer, make up the quartet of astronauts that will join the Expedition 65 crew already on board the space station.

Battleface taking early lead in space insurance race: Travel Weekly

"For example, you may have to travel to Texas just to get to your space launch," said Battleface CEO Sasha Gainullin. "So, standard travel insurance is still an important part of your journey from the time you leave home to the time you come back."

When are astronauts not astronauts? When they pay their own way into space, says NASA. But the growing overlap between exploration and adventure travel is redefining both categories.

Perseverance rover snaps first Mars photos after communications blackout. They're stunning.

NASA's Perseverance Mars rover has emerged from its first "solar conjunction" blackout and gotten back to work on the Red Planet. It's even phoned home with its first Mars photos since reawakening.

The car-sized Perseverance and other Mars spacecraft had to stand down for about two weeks recently when the Red Planet slipped behind the sun from Earth's perspective.

Microbes could help future Mars explorers make rocket fuel and oxygen on the Red Planet | Space

Future Mars astronauts could make rocket fuel on the Red Planet using air, water and sunlight, a new study finds. The technology could fuel the astronauts' flights back to Earth.

Making rocket fuel on Mars instead of shipping it from Earth could not only save billions of dollars, but it could also generate tons of oxygen to help people exploring Mars breathe, scientists added.

ESA's Mars Express Orbiter Will Try to 'Listen' to China's Mars Rover

However, it can not get this data back to Earth on its own. Instead, it requires the help of orbiters such as the European Space Agency's (ESA) Mars Express. Why?

Rovers use these radios to send their data up to Mars's roaming orbiters, which then forward it back to Earth where scientists eagerly await to receive it and analyze it.

Frosted Gullies In Mars' Northern Summer - SpaceRef

Although it was late summer when we acquired this image (2010), you can see frost within the gully alcoves. These alcoves are on the poleward facing crater wall and so spend much of the time in shadow. This allows the frost to survive.

The full-image shows that the opposite (south-facing) wall has similar gullies, but no frost during this season. Scientists are analyzing many images like this in order to try and answer the broader question of whether liquid water is responsible for the these gullies or not.

EarthSky | Asteroid Bennu's boulder mystery solved

Why does near-Earth asteroid Bennu have so many boulders on its surface? Prior to late 2018, when NASA’s visiting spacecraft OSIRIS-REx visited Bennu, scientists expected the asteroid to have a surface entirely or partly coated in a fine regolith of sand and pebbles.

The new study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature on October 6, 2021, comes from the University of Arizona. The study suggests that porous rocks are responsible for the lack of fine regolith on Bunnu’s surface.

Astro Bob: Biggest asteroid Ceres buzzes the Hyades | Duluth News Tribune

Giuseppe Piazzi at the Palermo (Italy) Observatory discovered Ceres on Jan. 1, 1801. At the time, it was dubbed a new planet. But when dozens more of these tiny bodies turned up over the coming years astronomers faced a dilemma.

William Herschel, discoverer of the planet Uranus, suggested calling them "asteroids," a word that means "star-like," after aster , the Latin word for star. Through telescopes of the era, Ceres and its ilk showed no discernable disks but instead looked exactly like the pinpoint stars.
