The installation was funded by a gift from alumni M. Andrew and Sandra L. Ross . The Rosses had their first discussion with the university about their vision to bring “The Solar System to Scale” to campus in July 2015. The idea came from Andy’s fascination with space as a child, he said, recalling how he looked up to the sky one night and asked his dad how close the nearest star was. Since that point, he’s never stopped trying to grasp the size of the universe.

Today's Your Last Chance to Help Name an Alien Solar System-- | Space

Right now, it's a solar system known only by the designation HD 17156. Before 2019 ends, it will bear an entirely different second moniker — perhaps one suggested by you.

The IAU has put some constraints on the project, of course. First, it needs two names: one for the planet , one for the star. They should be connected in some way that is open-ended enough to allow for naming other, not-yet-discovered stars or planets in the same system along the same principals.

"The proposed names should be of things, people, or places of long-standing cultural, historical, or geographical significance, worthy of being assigned to a celestial object," the IAU wrote in its guidelines . The names don't have to be related to astronomy, although they can be.

Oddball solar system throws planet formation theories into question | Science | AAAS

A solar system 31 light-years away is challenging astronomers' theories about how some types of planets form.

One leading notion about how the gas giants in our solar system—Jupiter, Saturn Uranus, and Neptune—developed is that agglomerations of dust and small pebbles eventually grew large enough to gravitationally attract large amounts of even light gases such as hydrogen and helium! This is the closest solar system to Earth containing ...fox61.com/2019/10/16/ ...containing...This is the closest solar system to Earth containing multiple planets Just 11 light years from earth is the GJ 15 A star system with two planets orbiting a red-dwarf star .!! But that sort of planetary evolution doesn't seem to work for all solar systems.

Take the star dubbed GJ 3512 and its retinue of planets: The parent star is a red dwarf about one-eighth the mass of our own sun orbited by two gas giants (depicted in an image from a video simulation above). The larger planet, whose presence has been confirmed, is almost half the mass of Jupiter and orbits the star once every 214 days , researchers report today in Science . Its suspected companion, which orbits farther out and apparently circles the star every 3.8 years or so, may weigh at least half as much as Saturn.

Earth-Like Planets May Be Common Outside Our Solar System, Scientists Discover - VICE

Scientists have directly observed the rocky guts of exoplanets, which are worlds from different star systems, by watching the fallout of these objects crashing into the corpses of dead stars.

This mind-boggling technique has revealed that exoplanets are similar in composition to planets in our own solar system, implying that worlds like Earth may be plentiful in our galaxy, according to a study published on Thursday in Science .

"It's pretty cool because this is really the only way to measure the geochemistry of exoplanetary bodies directly," said lead author Alexandra Doyle, a graduate student of geochemistry and astrochemistry at UCLA, in a phone call.

Co-author Edward Young, a professor of geochemistry and cosmochemistry at UCLA, added that the study represents "the first time such an advanced way of looking at the geochemistry of these bodies has been used," in the same call.

UFOs are back in the news — and Minnesotans are seeing more of them - StarTribune.com

"My wife and I noticed what we thought was a star. It then started moving up and down, side to side and at 90 degree angles," reads a September report marked as coming from Hastings, Minn. "I have never seen anything like this before."

"I was driving to work early in the morning and noticed double-layered lights surrounding a massive circular object in the sky around 494 and Minnetonka Blvd," reads another from Minnetonka in August.

"Just got home from buying a dirt bike for my kids and took it for a drive in the dark to the end of the driveway," described another from Mora in June, "I saw a fireball looking circle moving around slightly about a half mile away, about 60 ft up, it just suddenly disappeared."

Nearly a hundred times each year, Minnesotans file reports of suspected UFO encounters with a volunteer organization known as the National UFO Reporting Center, which makes them available to be searched online . Area 51: A deep dive into aliens, UFOs, and conspiracy

The term "UFO" was coined in 1953 by the United States Air Force. Over the years it's come to include many things people have seen in the sky.

For decades, "Area 51" in the deserts of Nevada has been shrouded in mystery with rumors that alien secrets are held inside.

* * *

"It wasn't acknowledged until 2013 that Area 51 truly existed," Barry Lewis Roth with the Colorado Mutual UFO Network said.

In 1955, the CIA was looking for a secure location for to test the Lockheed U-2 spy plane. That location became what is now Area 51.

Nearly a decade earlier in 1946, more than 2,000 sightings were reported worldwide, primarily by Swedish military.

"There was a rancher by the name of Max Brazzle that was checking out the pasture," Roth said. "He came across some debris field that had crashed there. And he discovered unusual material on the ground and allegedly bodies that appeared to be not human."

Canadian mint releases UFO-themed glow-in-the-dark coin - BBC News

Over 50 years ago, on the night of 4 October, strange lights appeared over the sky of a small Canadian fishing village.

Witnesses watched as the lights flashed and then dived towards the dark waters off the coast of Nova Scotia.

Now, what some believe to have been a UFO sighting has been commemorated by the Royal Canadian Mint.

* * *

The scene on the glow-in-the-dark coin depicts a specific moment described by various eyewitnesses.

After seeing four strange flashing lights in the offshore night sky, they spotted an object 60-feet in length flying low, which dropped down at a 45 degree angle.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which had received numerous calls reporting a plane crash in the harbour, along with local fishermen, tried to reach the object before it sank.

Area 51 festival wraps up in Nevada; Earthlings head home - Los Angeles Times

The festivals are over and Earthlings from around the globe headed home Sunday after a weekend camping and partying in the dusty Nevada desert and trekking to remote gates of Area 51, a formerly top-secret U.S. military base long the focus of UFO and space alien lore.

* * *

Visitors hailed from France, Russia, Germany, Peru, Sweden, Australia and many U.S. states — many toting cameras — in answer to an internet post in June suggesting that if enough people rushed a military base to "see them aliens" at 3 a.m. Sept. 20, authorities couldn't stop everyone.

Campers and festival-goers in Rachel peaked at about 3,000 on Friday, said Eric Holt, the Lincoln County official who headed planning for a feared influx of at least 30,000.

A few hundred more camped and attended one night of an abbreviated festival about 40 miles away in Hiko, population 120.

Jupiter's Great Red Spot: Our Solar System's Most Famous Storm | Space

When you think of Jupiter , you might think of its massive size, or colorful bands of gases stretching across its face. Or you might think of the iconic storm, that huge, churning red hurricane twice the size of Earth that's remained a signature of our solar system's largest planet since for more than a century! Great Red Spot - Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org /wiki/ Great_Red_Spot The Great Red Spot is a persistent high-pressure region in the atmosphere of Jupiter, producing an anticyclonic storm , the largest in the Solar System, 22 degrees south of Jupiter's equator. It has been continuously observed since 1830. Observation history!! This is Jupiter's Great Red Spot and it has captivated humans for generations.

Jupiter's Great Red Spot was first observed in 1831 by amateur astronomer Samuel Heinrich Schwabe, so we know the storm has existed for at least 150 years! But the famous storm is filled with plenty of mysteries.!! But it could be even older than that. Some astronomers speculate that, back in 1665, when astronomer Gian Domenico Cassini (the namesake for NASA's Cassini mission ) wrote about a "Permanent Storm," he was referring to the Great Red Spot.

Quite a lot has been going on:

What Makes a Planet and How Many Are There in Our Solar System?

What makes a space object a planet? How many are there actually in our solar system? Let's find out.

How many planets are there in our solar system? 9? 8? 12? More? The answer might actually surprise you.

Here we explore the answer to this apparently simple question and take a quick tour of the main primary planets of our home solar system.

* * *

What is a planet? An enormous chunk of stuff (rock or gas), roughly spheroidal in shape that orbits a star and may or may not have a moon, right?

While this is in part true, there are some issues with such a simple definition. What about asteroids? When does an object become large enough to be considered a planet?

Why are Venus and Mercury planets (according to current classifications) but not Pluto? As it turns out, the reasons are pretty straight forward.

Pressure at the Edge of the Solar System Is Far Higher Than Expected, Scientists Discover

Scientists have found that the pressure at the edge of the solar system is greater than expected after analyzing data collected by NASA's Voyager spacecraft—the only objects to have traveled to interstellar space, where the sun's magnetic field no longer has influence over the environment.

The edge of the solar system is a poorly understood region of space given its distance from Earth and the difficulty of conducting observations there! Citizen scientists Gerald Eichstädt and Seán Doran processed this image using data from the JunoCam imager.!! But a study published in The Astrophysical Journal is helping to cast new light on the dynamics of this mysterious zone.

A Faux Saturn Moon Titan on Earth Could Solve Solar System Mystery | Space

Big, schmancy compounds keep popping up all over the solar system , and new research may help clear up confusion about how they form in so many places.

"These dunes are pretty large," study senior author Ralf Kaiser, a chemist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, told Space.com, nearly as tall as the Great Pyramid in Egypt, he added. "If you want to understand the carbon and hydrocarbon cycle and the processes of hydrocarbons on Titan, it's really important to understand, of course, where the dominant source of carbon comes from."

Comet from another Solar System looks a lot like our own | Ars Technica

Interactions among the small bodies of our Solar System are expected to hurl small objects out into interstellar space with some regularity, and the frequency was probably much higher early in the system's history. Given that the same thing almost certainly happens at exosolar systems—and we now know there are a lot of those—it's likely that the vast volume of interstellar space is lightly sprinkled with small objects, some of which may sporadically pass through our own Solar System. But up until very recently, we'd had no evidence of their existence.

That situation changed with the discovery of 'Oumuamua , a strange, cigar-shaped body that was the first confirmed exosolar visitor. But 'Oumuamua was so strange that it set some astronomers speculating that it could be an alien craft . Earlier this year, however, scientists spotted a second potential exosolar visitor , and this one looked a lot like a comet. Now, the first data on the object, 2I/Borisov, is in, and it's clearly exosolar in origin but looks so much like our existing comets that we might not have realized where it was from if we didn't have a good grip on its orbit.

Visitors from deep space are buzzing our solar system. The race is on to explore them.

Two years ago, an automated telescope in Hawaii detected 'Oumuamua , the first known object from interstellar space observed passing through our solar system. Then in August, an amateur astronomer in Crimea found a second interstellar visitor, 2I/Borisov, suggesting that such objects come our way on a regular basis.

Now, scientists are eagerly developing plans to explore these messengers from afar and to learn their secrets.

For now, answers are trickling in slowly from observatories on the ground and in orbit around Earth, including an intriguing new image of Borisov just taken by the Hubble telescope . Come 2028, though, a European spacecraft called Comet Interceptor could be on its way to a brief encounter with another, as-yet-undetected interstellar object.

Hein and his colleagues have an even grander project in mind. They've drawn up plans for Project Lyra , a space probe that could travel fast enough to overtake either 'Oumuamua or Borisov (or another interstellar object) as it speeds its way out of the solar system, reaching either one by the mid-2040s.

What moons in other solar systems reveal about planets like Neptune and Jupiter

Bradley Hansen does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organization that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

* * *

What is the difference between a planet-satellite system as we have with the Earth and Moon, versus a binary planet – two planets orbiting each other in a cosmic do-si-do?

In 2018, two astronomers from Columbia University reported the first tentative observation of an exomoon – a satellite orbiting a planet that itself orbits another star. One curious feature was that this exomoon Kepler-1625b-i was much more massive than any moon found in our solar system. It has a mass similar to Neptune and orbits a planet similar in size to Jupiter.

Astronomers expect moons of planets like Jupiter and Saturn to have masses only a few percent of Earth. But this new exomoon was almost a thousand times larger than the corresponding bodies of our solar system – moons like Ganymede and Titan which orbit Jupiter and Saturn, respectively. It is very difficult to explain the formation of such a large satellite using current models of moon formation.

Gas Waterfalls Reveal Infant Planets Around Young Star - SpaceRef

Astronomers study these so-called protoplanetary disks to understand the processes of planet formation. Beautiful images of disks made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) how distinct gaps and ring features in dust, which may be caused by infant planets.

To get more certainty that these gaps are actually caused by planets, and to get a more complete view of planet formation, scientists study the gas in the disks in addition to dust. 99 percent of a protoplanetary disk's mass is gas, of which carbon monoxide (CO) gas is the brightest component, emitting at a very distinctive millimeter-wavelength light that ALMA can observe.

Last year, two teams of astronomers demonstrated a new planet-hunting technique using this gas. They measured the velocity of CO gas rotating in the disk around the young star HD 163296. Localized disturbances in the movements of the gas revealed three planet-like patterns in the disk.

It’s also a sign that those gases “waterfall” down from higher up in the disk — not just the so-called mid-plane where the planets are forming.

And, thanks to a computer model, the team of scientists behind the study showed that planets in those locations can explain the gas motions the researchers saw. Planet Sizes Matter for Habitability Too. - Universe Today

Without sufficient mass a planet won't have enough gravity to hold onto its water. A new study tries to understand how size affects the ability of a planet to hold onto its water, and as a result, its habitability.

The issue of what might make a planet habitable is an ongoing debate. Not only for exoplanets, but for some of the moons in our own Solar System's future! The Alpha Centauri system is only 4.3 light years away but only contains one exoplanet, called Proxima B .!! That's given rise to the popular notion of the " Goldilocks Zone ," or the circumstellar habitable zone, a range of proximity that's neither too close nor too far from a star for liquid water to persist on a planet.

With the search for exoplanets in habitable zones ramping up, and as we get better telescopes and techniques to study exoplanets in greater detail, scientists need more constraints on what planets to spend observing resources on. As this paper shows, a planet's mass could be a useful filter.

Newly Discovered Planet Challenges Astronomers' Notions Of How Planets Form : NPR

A team of scientists used a telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory in Spain to detect a gas giant orbiting a tiny red star some 30 light-years from Earth. Baback Tafreshi/Science Source/Getty Images hide caption

An oddball solar system discovered not too far from our own is forcing astronomers to reexamine their ideas about how planets get created.

In the journal Science, researchers report they detected a small, dim red dwarf star, about 30 light-years from Earth, being tugged by the gravity of what must be a huge, Jupiter-like planet.

"It's a very large planet, for such a small star," says Juan Carlos Morales , an astrophysicist at the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia in Barcelona who was part of the research team.

It's so big, he says, that its existence can't be explained by the conventional wisdom about how solar systems develop.

In case you are keeping track:

Ask Ethan: Would An Alien Civilization Classify Earth As An 'Interesting' Planet?

The ideal 'Earth 2.0' will be an Earth-sized, Earth-mass planet at a similar Earth-Sun distance from ... [+] a star that's very much like our own. We have yet to find such a world, but are working hard to estimate how many such planets might be out there in our galaxy. With so much data at our disposal, it's puzzling how varied the different estimates are.

I was thinking about the projection of light through space. My curtain was open and I saw the stars and something from a book popped into my head. It had said that the stars we see are basically reruns. The light is from so long ago, we don't even know if the star still exists or not.

* * *

I think these are great questions to ponder, and that science has an awful lot to say about what aliens would see by looking at Earth.

The orbits of the eight major planets vary in eccentricity and the difference between perihelion ... [+] (closest approach) and aphelion (farthest distance) with respect to the Sun. There is no fundamental reason why some planets are more or less eccentric than one another; it's simply a result of the initial conditions from which the Solar System formed. However, the odds of a transit are much greater for an inner planet like Mercury, which makes 4 such transits every Earth year and has nearly a 2% chance of a good alignment, than any of the outer planets, which take longer to transit and have much lower odds of a good-enough alignment.

Here’s a believable explanation of those UFO videos released by the Navy - MarketWatch

Jurica Dujmović says a military patent could explain mysterious objects caught on video by a jet-fighter pilot

* * *

Last month the U.S. Navy confirmed that three videos of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) taken by airplane pilots a few years ago are indeed authentic. (Notice we're not saying "unidentified flying object," or UFO.) This means the videos went through the U.S. military, so it can be assumed they have not been computer-generated or altered.

Commander David Fravor, who flew one of the fighters in the video ("Gimbal"), describes the object as "Tic Tac"-shaped, 40-feet long, with no wings, exhaust or discernible propulsion! The One Time I Produced 'Fake News' - When I Was 13 Years Old | WVXU

Back when we were kids, growing up on the east side of Dayton, my buddy Mike and I put together a whopper of a scam that was meant to prank none other than the U.S. Air Force – specifically, Project Blue Book, the Air Force's long-standing program to investigate reports of unidentified flying objects, or UFOs.

* * *

I regret to say that Mike and I were among those who reported sightings, or at least tried to in a very elaborate manner for a couple of 13-year-olds.

At any rate, this supposed Roswell alien was said to have been brought to Wright-Patterson to be poked and prodded and somehow nursed back to health.

We kids actually believed this stuff. Then there was a man in the neighborhood who drove a truck that made deliveries into the confines of the air base. He spun a tale that the neighborhood kids bought hook, line and sinker – that he had actually seen the alien; and that he had seen him on the base's golf course, playing a round of golf with some high-ranking officers.

* * *

The trio strode past the barrier toward the entrance a few hundred yards away. Police vehicles came into view. So did cameras on top of tall poles that watched them right back. An armed man in military fatigues — along with a German shepherd — stood behind a red-and-white gate arm.

Hundreds of people began arriving at the gate Friday. They came in tinfoil hats and orange jumpsuits. One guy arrived in his pajamas holding a bottle of liquor. They posed for pictures. Many sprinted the last 100 yards before stopping at the gate.
