UFOs are back in the news — and Minnesotans are seeing more of them - StarTribune.com

"My wife and I noticed what we thought was a star. It then started moving up and down, side to side and at 90 degree angles," reads a September report marked as coming from Hastings, Minn. "I have never seen anything like this before."

"I was driving to work early in the morning and noticed double-layered lights surrounding a massive circular object in the sky around 494 and Minnetonka Blvd," reads another from Minnetonka in August.

"Just got home from buying a dirt bike for my kids and took it for a drive in the dark to the end of the driveway," described another from Mora in June, "I saw a fireball looking circle moving around slightly about a half mile away, about 60 ft up, it just suddenly disappeared."

Nearly a hundred times each year, Minnesotans file reports of suspected UFO encounters with a volunteer organization known as the National UFO Reporting Center, which makes them available to be searched online . Extraterrestrial encounters have been creeping back into the zeitgeist this year, with the U.S. Navy acknowledging the existence of mysterious flying objects in September! Aliens, flying discs and sightings -- oh my-- A short history of UFOs in America

The UAPs are just a fraction of the incursions Navy training ranges see, Navy spokesperson Joe Gradisher told CNN. Which, of course, begs the question: Are we actually alone?

* * *

In that time, Air Force personnel looked at 12,618 reported UFO sightings and said that 701 remain "unidentified."

"Since Project Blue Book was closed, nothing has happened to indicate that the Air Force ought to resume investigating UFOs," the archives said.

The town of Roswell in New Mexico became shorthand for alien encounters in 1947 after reports that a flying object crash-landed in a field.

The Roswell Army Air Field initially said a "flying disk" had been recovered, but a second press release clarified that the object was from a weather balloon! Area 51: A deep dive into aliens, UFOs, and conspiracy

The term "UFO" was coined in 1953 by the United States Air Force. Over the years it's come to include many things people have seen in the sky.

For decades, "Area 51" in the deserts of Nevada has been shrouded in mystery with rumors that alien secrets are held inside.

* * *

"It wasn't acknowledged until 2013 that Area 51 truly existed," Barry Lewis Roth with the Colorado Mutual UFO Network said.

In 1955, the CIA was looking for a secure location for to test the Lockheed U-2 spy plane. That location became what is now Area 51.

Nearly a decade earlier in 1946, more than 2,000 sightings were reported worldwide, primarily by Swedish military.

"There was a rancher by the name of Max Brazzle that was checking out the pasture," Roth said. "He came across some debris field that had crashed there. And he discovered unusual material on the ground and allegedly bodies that appeared to be not human."

Canadian mint releases UFO-themed glow-in-the-dark coin - BBC News

Over 50 years ago, on the night of 4 October, strange lights appeared over the sky of a small Canadian fishing village.

Witnesses watched as the lights flashed and then dived towards the dark waters off the coast of Nova Scotia.

Now, what some believe to have been a UFO sighting has been commemorated by the Royal Canadian Mint.

The scene on the glow-in-the-dark coin depicts a specific moment described by various eyewitnesses.

After seeing four strange flashing lights in the offshore night sky, they spotted an object 60-feet in length flying low, which dropped down at a 45 degree angle.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which had received numerous calls reporting a plane crash in the harbour, along with local fishermen, tried to reach the object before it sank.

Area 51 festival wraps up in Nevada; Earthlings head home - Los Angeles Times

The festivals are over and Earthlings from around the globe headed home Sunday after a weekend camping and partying in the dusty Nevada desert and trekking to remote gates of Area 51, a formerly top-secret U.S. military base long the focus of UFO and space alien lore.

* * *

Visitors hailed from France, Russia, Germany, Peru, Sweden, Australia and many U.S. states — many toting cameras — in answer to an internet post in June suggesting that if enough people rushed a military base to "see them aliens" at 3 a.m. Sept. 20, authorities couldn't stop everyone.

Campers and festival-goers in Rachel peaked at about 3,000 on Friday, said Eric Holt, the Lincoln County official who headed planning for a feared influx of at least 30,000.

A few hundred more camped and attended one night of an abbreviated festival about 40 miles away in Hiko, population 120.
