Have you ever looked up into the darkness and wondered what is on the edge of the Milky Way? Stars, an orbiting galaxy, and an almost unfathomable amount of dark matter .
Astronomers who were virtually navigating through the furthest reaches of our galaxy through data from the NASA NEOWISE and ESA Gaia missions have come up with a new map of what is floating out there . In what is known as the galactic halo, something appears to be pulling at the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a much smaller galaxy that is still only on its first orbit around the Milky Way. That something is also leaving a wake of stars trailing behind it as the LMC sails on.
Reese Lansangan's poignant new song 'Orbiting' is "for all your loves left
The second single from the Filipino singer-songwriter's sophomore album, following 'What Is This Feeling?'
Filipino singer-songwriter Reese Lansangan has dropped a moving new song, ‘Orbiting’.
The stripped-down piano ballad arrived on Friday (April 30). The follow-up to ‘What Is This Feeling?’ , it’s the second single taken off her as-yet-untitled sophomore album, which is scheduled for release on May 30.
Massive flare seen on the closest star to the solar system: What it means for chances of alien
Proxima Centauri is the closest star to this solar system. A couple of years ago, a team discovered that there is a planet – called Proxima b – orbiting the star . It's just a little bit bigger than Earth, it's probably rocky and it is in what is called the habitable zone, or the Goldilocks zone. This means that Proxima b is about the right distance from the star so that it could have liquid water on its surface.
But this star system differs from the Sun in a pretty key way. Proxima Centauri is a small star called a red dwarf – it's around 15% of the radius of our Sun, and it's substantially cooler. So Proxima b, in order for it to be in that Goldilocks zone, actually is a lot closer to Proxima Centauri than Earth is to the Sun.

Who? Does that name even sound familiar to you? Honestly, I had no idea who this man was. In fact, I would have guessed he was a musician.
He was an author, a father, a pilot, "space walker", head of the National Air and Space Museum, undersecretary of the Smithsonian, a NASA contractor, and an astronaut.
In 1969, as he commanded the Apollo 11 module alone, his colleagues Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon's surface.
Shiny Satellites, Space Junk Blocking Our View of the Universe: Study | Technology News
Shiny satellites and space junk orbiting Earth may have increased the brightness of the night sky by more than 10 percent above the natural light levels, a new study has found, and further stated that these objects in the sky could also pose a threat to our viewing of the universe.
Miroslav Kocifaj of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Comenius University in Slovakia, who led the study, said the primary objective of their research was to estimate the potential contribution of external sources to night sky brightness. These include space objects in Earth's orbit.
China's new space station will need 10 more launches to complete | Space
The module, called Tianhe ("Harmony of the Heavens"), launched Wednesday night (April 28) atop a Long March-5B Y2 carrier rocket from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on the northeastern coast of south China's Hainan Province.
Tianhe is the foundational module for China's first space station . The module is billed as the largest spacecraft the nation has ever developed; it's 54.4 feet (16.6 meters) long, 13.8 feet (4.2 m) across at its widest point, and had a mass at liftoff of 22.5 tons.
Study investigates chemical properties of globular cluster NGC 1261
At a distance of some 53,000 light years , NGC 1261 is a GC in the Milky Way's outer halo. The cluster is 10.3 billion years old, has a mass of about 341,000 solar masses, and metallicity at a level of -1.38. The chemical composition of NGC 1261 is still poorly understood, however some studies managed to determine abundance ratios for over 20 elements and suggested that multiple stellar populations may be present in this GC.
A team of astronomers led by Andreas J. Koc-Hansen of the Heidelberg University, Germany, decided to take a closer look at NGC 1261, focusing on its chemical properties. By employing the MIKE spectrograph mounted on the 6.5 m Magellan2/Clay Telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory, Chile, they performed a chemical abundance analysis of this cluster.
