No, this isn't a new phase of the moon officially recognized by taco-loving astronomers. The totally made up—and admittedly fitting—lunar phase is a loving tribute to our natural satellite by none other than Taco Bell . And to celebrate its arrival, everyone gets a free taco .
Here's the deal: Hit up your local T-Bell between 8pm and 11:59 on May 4, and you'll score a free Crunchy Taco—you don't even need to buy anything. Or, if you'd rather upgrade your lunch plans instead, you can snag the freebie if your order online or via the chain's mobile app at any time throughout the day.
Searching the sky: The moon is submerged by a shadow | BenitoLink
So on May 26 th what is this mysterious shadow messing with our moon, the brightest object in the night sky? Well, it's actually quite simple. Scientist call it a total lunar eclipse. Simple for me to say because I read it out of a book. It's amazing what you can get out of a book.
Next you will ask; where and when, at what time, and will I be able to witness it? Well, just like anything else in this world we have good news and of course we have some bad news.
A 'Super Flower Blood Moon' Eclipse And An Improbable Planetary 'Kiss': Your Guide To The Moon
Summer stargazing is here. The nights may be getting shorter as we countdown to the summer solstice, but the final month of spring in the northern hemisphere this year sees two of 2021's biggest astronomical events.
The year's biggest "supermoon" on May 26, 2021 is surely one of them, a sight that for half the world will be merely the largest-looking and brightest full Moon of the year. For others—notably those in the western half of the U.S.—that "Super Flower Moon" will also be a rare total lunar eclipse during which our satellite will turn a reddish-orangey colour for 15 minutes.
Mission to the moon? | National Hog Farmer
The rocket ship (lean hog futures) appears to be headed to the moon. Recall that I declared in January the hog market on a launch pad and ready for takeoff. I kind of had to apologize in early February as the rocket remained on the launch pad. Nearly the instant the article was posted in early February, we had lift-off, and hogs have been flying ever since. No more apologies. So far this year, lean hog futures have increased by 56.7%, leading all commodities.
Yes, despite the rocket ship performance of cash hog prices, the industry remains in contraction. The March "Hogs & Pigs" report indicated that March-May farrowings would be down 3% from last year and that June-August farrowings would be down 4%. The next "Hogs & Pigs" report is scheduled for release on June 24.
Why Was the Moon Orange Last Night? Here's Why It Can Change Colour
Twitter has lit up with reports from around the U.S. and U.K. that the moon appeared orange or pink on Thursday night.
It is unclear exactly how widely the phenomenon was reported. Users reported the sight in various states across the U.S. including Louisiana, Illinois and Indiana.
One user based in New Orleans wrote in the early hours of Friday: "The moon was orange last night, sorry to whoever didn't get to see it."
Not the best quality pic but I got a pic of the Moon in a dark orange color last night! Just thought it was cool the sunset was pretty last night too but now I better get to sleep 💤! @stephmeadwx pic.twitter.com/Ud6Tj51cgA
Weather Tidbits: Pink Moon - 47abc
The April full moon takes center stage in this Weather Tidbits. It’s called the Pink Moon due to the wild ground phlox which is plant that blooms during this time of the year that is native to the eastern North America. It’s also called the Breaking Ice Moon but also the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and the Fish Moon; which are nicknames associated with the birth of spring.
Scientists discover likely source of the moon's faint yellow tail | Science News for Students
A comet-like tail of sodium atoms streams away from the moon. Over the years, scientists have proposed various ideas for how that sodium got there. Two new studies now pin down a likely source for most of it: swarms of small meteorites that constantly bombard the moon.
First discovered almost 23 years ago, the tail was eventually shown to be a flood of atoms coming off the moon. But what was releasing them remained a mystery.
Some scientists had suggested sunlight striking lunar rocks could give sodium atoms enough energy to escape. Others proposed that the solar wind — charged particles streaming from the sun — might be knocking sodium atoms from the rocks. Even charged particles emitted by the sun during intense solar flares might do this. And then there were those micrometeorites. They might liberate sodium as they crashed into moon rocks. That sodium might even come from the meteorites themselves.
NASA's New Administrator Wants Climate Science, Astronauts on the Moon
Instead, Bill Nelson is keeping his eyes on the same prizes as his predecessor, Jim Bridenstine: sending astronauts to the moon and Mars.
Nelson, a three-term US Senator from Florida who flew into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1986, was sworn in as the new NASA Administrator on Monday.
His plan is mainly to keep the ball rolling. During confirmation hearings, Nelson told Congress that he wants to see NASA achieve its most ambitious goal — sending astronauts to the lunar surface and, eventually, to Mars. He also advocated a renewed focus on climate-change research, which has historically been a big part of NASA's directive but was deprioritized under the Trump administration.

A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts
by Andrew Chaikin
The Folio Society, 2021
hardcover, 800 pp. (two volumes), illus.
US$225.00
The first copy of A Man on the Moon that I bought was when the book came out in 1994, timed to the 25th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing. I got a copy at a Boston bookstore just in time for a talk its author, Andrew Chaikin, gave at Boston University shortly before the book rode a wave of popularity tied to the 25th anniversary and other events, like the movie Apollo 13 that came out a year later, leading to the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon .
