Anyone with a strong Internet connection can watch a bus-sized asteroid make a safe flyby of Earth today (April 26).
The asteroid is roughly 39 feet wide (12 meters), making it roughly the size of a bus, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory . The little world will pass within 125,000 miles (201,000 km) of our planet.
China announces plans for a new asteroid-deflecting mission - The Verge
China's space agency plans to send a spacecraft to slam into an asteroid, knocking it into a new — and hopefully safer — orbit.
The country hasn't yet determined which asteroid to target. The mission was announced as one part of a larger new planetary defense effort, which will seek to catalog and monitor near-Earth asteroids, especially those that might pose a threat to our planet.
New Target for Asteroid Probe: "Potentially Hazardous" Apophis - Sky & Telescope - Sky & ...
Once the primary mission of NASA’s OSIRIS-REx is complete, the spacecraft will head toward a new destination: near-Earth asteroid Apophis.
Once an asset is in space and functioning, it only makes sense to repurpose it and obtain the most science bang for the buck. In that vein, NASA announced yesterday that it will grant extensions for eight missions currently underway.
16 Psyche Asteroid | Eyewitness News
BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The asteroid belt holds thousands of asteroids that orbit our solar system. A local professor has played a major role in the study and mapping of one of the biggest asteroids.
The 16 psyche asteroid is the largest m-class asteroid in our solar system the m stands for metal and it’s that metal that drew Bloomsburg University professor Michael Shepard to his research.
Prebiotic Organic Compounds in Asteroid Ryugu | Planetary News
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Hayabusa2 mission to asteroid Ryugu investigated its surface from 2018 to 2020 and successfully returned approximately 5.4 grams of Ryugu samples to Earth in December 2020.
The Hayabusa2-initial-analysis soluble organic matter team led by Hiroshi Naraoka of Kyushu University, Japan, examined the bulk and organic chemistry of the returned samples collected from the surface of asteroid Ruygu.
US Space Command confirmed first meteor from outside solar system hit Earth - We Are The Mighty
An asteroid is a rocky object in space that is smaller than a planet. Meteoroids are space rocks that are smaller than asteroids and can range from the size of a grain of dust to a large boulder. When a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere and burns up, it becomes a meteor.
In October 2017, scientists discovered what was believed to be the first interstellar object to enter our solar system. The object, named 1I/’Oumuamua, was about 400 meters long and likened in shape to a fire extinguisher.
Scientist discover all ingredients necessary for DNA in meteorite for first time | The Independent
The idea that genetic material could form on carbon-rich asteroids and then ride down to Earth on meteorites small enough to "soft-land" without vaporising the prebiotic material is not new and dates back at least 50 years.
"The absolute abundance of nucleobases of extraterrestrial origin could be enough for further chemical reactions on the early Earth," said Yasuhiro Oba, a professor in the Institute of Low Temperature Science at Hokkaido University, in Japan, and the lead author of the new study.
