Michigan State University's Seth Jacobson and colleagues in China and France have unveiled a new theory that could help solve a galactic mystery of how our solar system evolved.
The research also has implications for how terrestrial planets such as Earth were formed and the possibility that a fifth gas giant lurks 50 billion miles out into the distance.
Largest treasure trove of exocomets to date found in alien solar system | Space
Thirty alien comets have been spotted transiting the young star Beta Pictoris, their long tails lighting up the skies of the fledgling planets forming there.
The comet discovery has been made using NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite ( TESS ), which watches for dips in starlight as planetary bodies pass in front of — or transit — their star.
When will we find Planet 9 — the unseen planet in our solar system?
During my studies I met a fellow who told me with the utmost confidence that within the next decade a new planet would be discovered. Not an exoplanet, of which there were thousands already, but a planet in our own solar neighborhood.
With the demotion of Pluto, that would make this our ninth planet, and such became its name: Planet 9. This is an unofficial name, however, as when discovered, the astronomy higher-ups will probably name it after some Roman or Greek goddess.
A radio message will be sent to an alien solar system this year - Big Think
METI International, a California organization set up in 2016 to pursue what's sometimes called "active SETI," has announced it will send a radio message from the world's first commercial deep space network, located in Goonhilly, England, to the TRAPPIST-1 exoplanet system later this year.
Jupiter Crushing Planets in Our Solar System With its Size Magnificently Shown in This Animation
A recent animation has been posted on Twitter by a planetary astronomer James O’Donoghue and it shows the size of Jupiter and how rapidly it has been spinning. The clip further goes on to show how the planets of the solar system dominated by Jupiter, which is further dwarfed by the Sun.
Best solar system model | WesternSlopeNow.com
For as long as humans could look up at the night sky, we've been fascinated with the stars. How far away are they? Where did they come from? What secrets do they hide?
Including Earth, the planets that orbit our sun are referred to as the solar system. The term solar refers to our sun, and scientists know of thousands of systems like ours, though they might not all have a habitable planet.
NASA gives boost to Boston University-led effort to model solar system's protective bubble
Founded in 2020, the center won the funding as part of NASA's DRIVE (Diversify, Realize, Integrate, Venture, Educate) Science Centers program .
"The competition the last two years was fierce," says Merav Opher , a BU College of Arts & Sciences professor of astronomy and the SHIELD DRIVE Science Center's principal investigator. "Each of the original nine is a powerhouse on its own. It's a huge deal."
Exploration Extended for 8 Planetary Science Missions – NASA Solar System Exploration
Following a thorough evaluation, NASA has extended the planetary science missions of eight of its spacecraft due to their scientific productivity and potential to deepen our knowledge and understanding of the solar system and beyond.
“Extended missions provide us with the opportunity to leverage NASA’s large investments in exploration, allowing continued science operations at a cost far lower than developing a new mission,” said Lori Glaze, director of the Planetary Science Division at NASA’s ...
NASA will probably visit Uranus in the next decade | Popular Science
Experts are optimistic about a mission to the ice giant, based on the conclusions of an influential report.
An influential new report uses contributions from over 100 professionals in space-related research and industry across the globe to plan for the next decade of space exploration—and they have set their sights on the planet Uranus and an icy moon of Saturn named Enceladus.
