Astronomers report an exomoon almost three times the size of Earth

Astronomers report an exomoon almost three times the size of Earth

Astronomers think they've found an 'exomoon' – a moon that exists outside our own solar system – based on data from NASA 's Kepler space telescope.

It's orbiting a Jupiter-sized planet called Kepler 1708b in another solar system, 5,500 light-years away from Earth.

Both supermoon candidates are likely made of gas that has piled up under the gravitational pull caused by their enormous size, said Kipping.

Jupiter-like planet discovered by NASA volunteer citizen scientist

A citizen scientist has discovered a giant gaseous planet about 379 light-years from Earth, orbiting a star with the same mass as the Sun, NASA has said.

Since 2010, the former U.S. naval officer has participated in online volunteer projects that allow anyone who is interested -- "citizen scientists" -- to look through NASA telescope data for signs of exoplanets, planets beyond our solar system.

Now, Jacobs has helped discover a giant gaseous planet about 379 light-years from Earth, orbiting a star with the same mass as the Sun. The Jupiter-size planet is special for astronomers because its 261-day year is long compared to many known gas giants outside our solar system.
