NASA's gamma-ray observatory is in safe mode after a possible wheel failure | Space

NASA's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has temporarily stopped its science observations while the mission team investigates an issue.

On Tuesday night (Jan. 18), the observatory, a gamma-ray hunting space telescope originally called the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer, went into safe mode and paused all science work. This maneuver may have been in response to a reaction wheel failure, which the mission team continues to explore.

Philippine Space Agency, National Coast Watch ink deal to strengthen maritime security |

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the National Coast Watch have recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to enhance maritime security by using space science and technology applications (SSTA) such as satellites.

PhilSA Director General Joel Joseph Marciano and National Coast Watch Center Director Roy Echeverria, along with other officials, inked the deal through a virtual ceremony on January 19.

Bobby Braun Moving from JPL to APL – SpacePolicyOnline.com

Bobby Braun, JPL’s Director for Planetary Science, will succeed Mike Ryschkewitsch as Space Exploration Sector Head at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab at the end of March.

APL Director Ralph Semmel said Braun’s “achievements in leading space technology and science innovations, as well as his accomplishments in mission and program development, are an ideal match for the types of unique and complex challenges we undertake here."

IIT Kanpur To Set Up Two New Departments Of Design And Space Science

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has approved setting up of two new departments in the fields of Design, Space Science and Astronomy, making the total tally to 20 academic departments. The decision was taken on the Board of Governors meeting on January 12.

The new Department of Design is planning to launch a Bachelor of Design programme from 2023. "The new department will also expand its very popular Master of Design program, which in past has attracted recruiters from Microsoft, Nokia, Google, Oracle, Infosys, TCS, etc. to even higher levels.

Unearthing an Ancient Universe; the James Webb Space Telescope

My name is Thomas Greene, and I am an astrophysicist at NASA's Ames Research Centre in California’s Silicon Valley.

I am a co-investigator on the James Webb Space Telescope's (Webb) Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared (MIRI) science instruments. My work includes leading the development of the spectroscopic modes of NIRCam, which involves dispersing light into constituent wavelengths.

Armenia, UAE talk cooperation in space science, technology - PanARMENIAN.Net

Axiom's 1st private crew launch to space station delayed to March | Space

Houston-based Axiom Space now plans to launch its first space mission to the International Space Station on March 31, more than one month later than its initial target.

NASA quietly made the announcement Tuesday (Jan. 18) at the bottom of an International Space Station blog post otherwise focused on a recent Russian spacewalk at the Prichal docking module, and a forthcoming SpaceX Dragon cargo undocking.
