Venus' extreme surface heat drives swirling winds in upper atmosphere, study finds | Space

Scientists have shown how the swirling winds and searing heat on Venus work together in a revealing new study.

The surface of Venus is hot enough to melt lead with temperatures averaging 872 degrees Fahrenheit (467 degrees Celsius). This extreme heat is maintained by a thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide that traps the heat on the planet in a greenhouse effect .

The first detector to be calibrated is the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam), which can detect wavelengths just outside of the visible spectrum and offers a clearer image than cameras that only detect visible light.

The remaining detectors will collect the light that passes through the NIRCam and record the wavelengths for image outputting. Once all detectors are fully functional, NASA operators will test the 17 observation modes on reference objects with known brightness and position.

Whoever Controls the Moon Controls the Solar System

In 1961, U.S. President John F. Kennedy declared that his nation would be the first to land a man on the moon. That ambitious goal would later be fulfilled as two NASA astronauts took wobbly steps across the lunar surface on July 20, 1969, much to the dismay of Russia's own space program leaders.

A solar monitoring system allows you to keep track of the output of your solar panels. A solar monitor is usually installed at the same time your solar panels are installed. There are also aftermarket solar monitors, some of which also function as home energy monitors.

ISRO's Chandrayaan-2 Detects Massive Solar Proton Events Undetected by Most Global Satellites |

Our Sun is a giant ball of hot plasma, and it supports a dynamic atmosphere that affects nearly everything in the solar system. Notably, the powerful eruptions from the Sun—flares and coronal mass ejections—spew a stream of charged particles throughout the solar system.

Therefore, multiple space missions from space agencies across the globe study the dynamics of the Sun with keen eyes. The Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO's Chandrayaan-2 is one among them, even though its primary mission is to study the Moon.

Sonoma County Airport reaches for the sun, tapping into new solar power projects

Sonoma County's growing regional airport will now get most of its power from the sun, after officials this week "flipped the switch" on a newly installed solar photovoltaic system that was four years in the making.

The "switch" was actually symbolic, rigged for photographs and effect. But the 884-kilowatt system did indeed start providing electricity to the airport this week, said Airport Manager Jon Stout.

How Do Planets Form? Ask This Colombian Astronomer!

Colombian astronomer María Claudia Ramírez-Tannus will be part of a team using the newly-launched James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to unlock the mysteries of protoplanetary disks: disks of dust and gas where planets are going to form.

"The problem is that before JWST we could only observe protoplanetary disks that are very close to our Sun and that are in isolation," she says, "With JWST we will study the effect of extreme environments - caused by the presence of massive stars - on proto-planetary disks."
