The Moon has orbited Earth since the Solar System’s early days. Anyone who’s ever spent time at the ocean can’t fail to notice the Moon’s effect. The Moon drives the tides even in the world’s most remote inlets and bays.
The widely-believed Giant Impact Hypothesis explains the Moon’s formation. A Mars-sized protoplanet named Theia crashed into the young Earth, sending molten material into space. That material formed a disk around Earth which eventually coalesced into the Moon.

Our home planet, Earth, travels at an average speed of 107,280 km/hr., taking about 365 1/4 days to complete one orbit around the Sun.
I use the term average here because, as Earth's annual orbit around the Sun is along an ellipse (see last week's column), its speed is not constant along that orbital path.

The moon will be visible at pretty much any time of the night this week as it gets closer and closer to approaching the full moon which occurs next week. Right around sunset the moon should be right overhead so just look up.

By observing the huge protoplanetary discs of gas and dust surrounding nascent stars, astronomers have developed a good understanding of how planets form.
However, protoplanetary discs have also been discovered in some ancient binary systems that contain a white dwarf. These stars have blasted away much of their atmospheres, which then surrounds the binary system.

Out of the thousands of extrasolar planets found so far, these three gas giant planets, first detected by the NASA TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) Mission , have some of the shortest-period orbits around subgiant or giant stars.
