Interplanetary 5K takes runners across the solar system
PEORIA (25 News) - Ever tried to run to Mars? While it may sound like something out of science fiction, that's exactly what a group of runners did today in Peoria.
The Peoria Riverfront Museum's 22nd annual 'Interplanetary 5K' gives a true sense of the scale of our neighboring planets. It's based on a scale model of our solar system, with the museum acting as the sun.
Asteroid impacts coated Mercury's surface in tiny diamonds | SYFY WIRE
Getting our hands on diamonds here on Earth often involves digging deep underground to find the places where they form. On Mercury, it might be as easy as bending over.
Kevin Cannon, Planetary Scientist from the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering and Center for Space Resources at the Colorado School of Mines, crafted a series of simulations of Mercury's surface which show it could be littered with diamond debris.
Luhman 16 | StarDate Online
One of the closest neighboring "star systems" doesn't contain any stars at all. Instead, it's a pair of brown dwarfs — objects that aren't massive enough to shine as true stars, but that are too massive to be considered planets.
Luhman 16 is just six and a half light-years away — the third-closest system to the Sun. The two brown dwarfs are so faint, though, that they weren't discovered until 2013. Observations made since then have shown that the brown dwarfs orbit each other once every 27 years.
