The space rock Apophis is as big as the Empire State Building and is expected to make a close pass of Earth in 2029.
Apophis was discovered in 2004 and was for a while believed to be on a collision course with our planet.
An analysis of the object's orbit last year revealed, however, that Earth is safe from impact for at least the next century.

A fragment of the rock may also have been found, preserved within a tiny "spherule" of clay, at the Tanis fossil site in North Dakota that the TV show is centred around.

A Brattleboro/Russian connection that's out of this world | Community-news | reformer.com
BRATTLEBORO — One hundred and six years ago this week an astronomer in Crimea identified an asteroid that was a little more than 5 miles in diameter. The large basalt-like rock is part of an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Back in 1916 Crimea was part of the Russian Empire. It was also disputed territory and was also home of the Simeiz Observatory. Russia entered World War I in 1914. While the Russian Empire was fighting Germany and Austria-Hungary, a civil war broke out among Russians.
Now discovered: the interstellar object fell to Earth in 2014
Objects that originate from interstellar space don’t just fly through our solar system. It can now be proven for the first time that such a visitor from the outside actually arrived on Earth.
The event was held in 2014 near Papua New Guinea. A meteorite entered the Earth’s atmosphere in the form of a fireball. As subsequent analysis of its trajectory has now shown, it did not come from the asteroid fields of our solar system, but had its origin beyond its limits.
