1989 JA to fly by Earth: Largest asteroid to approach us in 2022

A "potentially hazardous" asteroid measuring more than a mile long will zoom past Earth this week, making it the largest asteroid that is expected to get relatively close to our planet in 2022.

The asteroid, named 1989 JA, is estimated to be 1.1 miles long, or 5,905 feet, according to NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies. For reference, the asteroid is twice the size of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.

Jupiter's massive gravity kicked strange Ceres into the asteroid belt | Space

A new computer simulation suggests that dwarf planet Ceres may have been flung by the gravity of gas giant Jupiter toward the sun during the volatile era of planet formation 4.5 billion years ago.

Round like a planet, Ceres also contains some odd chemical compounds, such as ammonia, that are not present in its neighbors. Ceres' strange nature has long led scientists to believe that the dwarf planet is an intruder in the asteroid belt.

An Asteroid That Is Quadruple the Size of the Empire State Building Will Pass by Earth This Week

Scheduled to arrive on May 27, 7335 (1989 JA) has been classified by NASA as "potentially hazardous" due to its enormous size.

NASA monitors near-Earth objects like the one arriving in May closely, because, despite being at a safe distance from our planet, it could do a lot of damage if its orbit were to change.

Remarkably, that's only ten times the distance between the Earth and the moon - especially given the enormous size of the asteroid.

The 7355 asteroid is as tall as 1,000 people stacked on top of each other and four times the size of the Empire State Building.
