Giant asteroid set to make close approach to Earth by Sunday: NASA | SaltWire
A large asteroid will come close to Earth within the next week according to NASA reports. The 1,600-foot wide rock, formally known as 388945 (2008 TZ3), is set to make its closest approach on Sunday.
Luckily, the asteroid is only "close" in space-terms according to experts. In reality, it is still 5.6 million kilometres away from our planet and is no cause for alarm.

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) Mission will dramatically smash into an asteroid 11million miles from Earth this summer.
Should it prove successful, it could pave the way for a new planetary defence system that can deflect incoming space rocks before impact.

Scientists may transform asteroids into soil using fungi – Manila Bulletin
Space habitats of the future need to come up with ways to sustain their food supply without depending on resupply missions from Earth.
This is why Jane Shevtsov, administrator of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), partnered with scientists from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and mushroom company Fungi Perfecti to test how fungi could help turn asteroids into soil.

Did a Meteor Strike Dutchess County A Few Years Ago?
In late April, scientists tracked an asteroid twice the size of the Statue of Liberty as it made a "close" pass to Earth. By close, we're actually talking around 2 million miles away. However, by astronomical terms, that's practically right in our backyard.
But in 2029, a giant space rock some have called the "Doomsday" asteroid will pass just under 20,000 miles from the Earth, which is below the orbit of many of our satellites. Apophis will make a very close approach on April 13, 2029, and will be close enough to be visible to the naked eye.
