A new Kind of Solar Sail Could let us Explore Difficult Places to Reach in the Solar System - ...

Solar sailing technology has been a dream of many for decades. The simple elegance of sailing on the light waves of the sun does have a dreamy aspect to it that has captured the imagination of engineers as well as writers.

To create such diffractive pressure, the team created a material with very small gratings embedded in it to diffract the light on a surface that could still benefit from the force created when that light is absorbed.

Meteorite bears the imprint of a supernova from before the solar system was born

The stone is called Hypatia, and right away it was seen to be an oddball.

That type of meteorite is called carbonaceous chondrite .

One specific kind, called the CI group, is very low in chondrules or doesn't have any at all, and Hypatia appears to be this kind. This group of meteorites is very old, meaning they formed very early, before the Sun and planets coalesced out of a cloud of gas and dust, the solar nebula.

Battery storage necessary for solar power expansion in Florida

PARRISH, Fla. – A key to the future of Florida's electric grid is a device that could be confused for a computer server.

This apparatus is actually a battery module. By themselves, each of the components is as powerful as 2,000 iPhone batteries.

At night or when there is thick cloud cover overhead, energy from the sun captured by the utility's nearby solar panel field can be stored for later use, further reducing the need to rely on fossil fuels and allowing excess renewable energy generated not to go to waste.
